oh hey, my friend goes went to hkis last year. transferred to my school this year.

"The bottom line is that schools end up with the same percentage of Asians year after year. Whether you're Asian American, Asian from Asia or Asian from Germany, you're in that pool. However, I can see that you might have an advantage as they can also claim a kid from Germany, not a big deal at the top 5, but probably a plus below those."

i dun think being from germany helps that much at all..there are a lot of western europe kids anyway

I don't think you have to put your race down on an application. There are several loopholes anyway. If you have any traceable blood from another race, you can use that. So if you could trace your ancestry to someone who was white or black, well, you could put down white or black.

Andover and Exeter have long had racist histories by many accounts and actively consider race when evaluating an applicant according to some. The same goes for all the IVY feeders. Anyways, the acceptance rates for Asians are pretty similar to the acceptance rates for whites at the Ivies.

"the acceptance rates for Asians are pretty similar to the acceptance rates for whites at the Ivies."
HUH???
ivies admit rate range from 9% to 27% last time i checked XD

it always depends on the size of the applicant pool....

I am a senior at a New England prep school.

Yeah, and those acceptance rates are roughly the same for whites and asian-americans last time I checked. It would, or should, be tougher for non Americans to get in to US schools. The acceptance rates for asians and whites at the Ivies are roughly the same.

The following is informal and not based on thorough and serious research:

At the interview, you could take extreme measures. The New England Prep Schools are weakening drastically though, caving in to math teams and home schooling and stuff like that I think. Exeter and Andover actively look for Asians though for math and science, even if they have quotas and such. I knew a non-Asian who went to a top school and he said that there is definitely a perception regarding a non Asian excelling in math and science. If they're Jewish(small in number) or even from Boston suburbs branches of the first families(also small in number and shrinking) then they face less of a stigma. But if they have a Polish, Irish, Italian, or especially a Spanish or Portuguese surname, they face a lot of adversity from society. Also, if they're from another country, they might face less of a stigma.

I call it the "Eric Weddle effect." Eric Weddle is a cornerback who completely dominated Calvin Johnson, considered the best wide receiver in college football by many, but is not taken seriously because he is white.

I didn't know that there was still an active stigma against the Irish. That sucks. I have an very Irish last name.

Thx for the imformation. This is a really great website!

There isn't really any active stigma against any ethnic group, but since people expect certain ethnicities to be better at math and science, they also expect all other ethnicities to be worse at math and science.

Ever see Good Will Hunting?

i loveeeeeee Good Will Hunting

Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll give it a shot. Say I'm working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. So I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, 'cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never had a problem with get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Send in the marines to secure the area" 'cause they don't give a ****. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number was called, 'cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some guy from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass. And he comes home to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile my buddy from Southie realizes the only reason he was over there was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the skirmish to scare up oil prices so they could turn a quick buck. A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. And naturally they're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's got to walk to the job interviews, which sucks 'cause the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin' 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what do I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. Why not just shoot my buddy, take his job and give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president.

Coyote1989:

what do you mean by "new england preps are weakening dramatically",
caving to math teams and home schooled, etc.? Just wondering.

Why are you asking that question? The acceptance rate for those students that are qualified is not be based on or biased by ethnicity... unless I'm missing something.
