Asian and SAT

I know that admissions generally have higher expectations when it comes to SAT and Asians. Is that only for American-Asians or for all Asians? I know for a fact that I was brought to Hong Kong at a young age and always communicated in Hindi around the house so I never really developed my English that well, thus my relatively low score in CR for Ivies, how will admissions see this? Should I comment about it?

I think it’s asians in general…You seem like you’re in Hong Kong as well… me too! Yeah I’m asian as well…Hindi? You’re an indian living in Hong Kong? Cool!

i’m asian too! Living in Singapore… Taking the May SAT. Mugging like crazy now. :)

Singaporean or Chinese? Me chinese! same here…mugging like crazy as well! =]

I’m singaporean chinese… :)

Umm…it’s not based inherently on your ethnicity/nationality. It’s based on the demographic of the school that is considering you. If the school has a lot of Asians and they happen to score relatively higher on average, then you, in theory, have competition. Whether you are an international applicant or not is generally irrelevant in this realm of admissions.

So, you are bunched together with all the other Asians. However, I think they still consider that you are an international applicant. I don’t know the details on that.

你好 skyboy! At least we have something in common now =]

So then what is a competitive score with the Asian bunch at Ivy schools?
Also, should I comment on the fact that I been brought up with Hindi rather than English even though I live in Hong Kong?

I have 800M, 750W, 680CR.

A competitive score with the Asian bunch is a 2000+. I maybe be a little lenient (in order to not receive criticism), but of course 200-300 points higher than that may be needed. That’s just my preference. It seems like you can for sure increase your critical reading by a lot. You can pm me for tips on improving cr and also some other resources that I can point you toward that I use (I have a 750ish in cr so I can surely be of a good help to you) Feel free to pm me anytime you want since you live in the same city as I do =]

^dont PM that guy…the only resource you should be using is the blue book. I PMed him and he advertised a service you have to pay for. Don’t waste your time or your money.

Anyway, 680 CR is not competitive as an average applicant (whether Asian or not) in the first place. You should generally score 740+ in all sections for Ivy Leagues, meaning there is little room for you to improve any further. 740+ in all sections should be enough for ALL races. It is not like all Asians score 2400.

^ lol I don’t know what you’re talking about. Perhaps you’ve mixed me up with a wrong guy? I just like to give free tips and resources like Barron’s. In fact, I might as well just tell everyone what to get right here if you’re happy =]

I am always caught out by the long reading sections for the critical reading. Wherever, I read it says… enjoy the passage and be interested, though I find it kind of hard. The problem is that I always boil the answers down to two choices, both of which are somewhat correct but one is more correct than the other. It is at this point that I choose the wrong answer. Well anyway, I am taking the SAT one more time, hopefully I’ll get a 12 in the essay so I can get 800M, 800W, 750CR (if I can improve a little bit, I usually get 8-10 of these questions wrong in the whole test).

Also, I bought Barron’s 2400, haven’t really gone through it yet but I can presume that it will talk about annotating as you read etc.

Its not supposed to affected by your race at all… that s racial discrimmination…
But apparantly, honq konqers have it fairly well… (yay for us!!)

qood luck!

If only it worked this way…you cant even imagine how racist colleges really are…
If you want to proof, just go to some of the RD threads for Ivies. You’ll see what I mean

I would say for Asians, a 2300+ is competitive and safe so long as the person is well-rounded.
Also, a great resource are the RD Threads. You can actually see for yourself how high you need as an Asian, and you’ll probably find people who were in your same situation. (Thanks to all the current seniors)

go to the SAT prep. section and you’ll find Noitaraperp’s guide to go from 500 to 800CR. I think it’ll be extremely helpful.
