garrrh- SAT IIs- please chance!

Hey,

I'm an indian (south asian) living in HK, will be applying as an international student- I go to a private school which sends a few people into ivies and colleges of similar standard each year. For example, this year one person got into harvard, three into U chicago, 1 into penn, a few into cornell, one into cambridge. A few years back we got 5 into penn last year 2 into penn- so we got some relationship with them.

These are the schools I'm applying to

U Chicago (EA)
Harvard
Columbia
U Penn
Brandeis
Tufts
NYU
Michigan

probably undecided- maybe Jerome Fisher for penn

Here are my stats

SAT I-
Reading 780
Writing 760
Maths 770
Essay 8
Total: 2310

I took it twice, first time I got 2150 with 760 (R), 760 (W) and 630 (M) with an Essay of 11/12

SAT IIs-
Lit-730
Maths II- 780

IGCSEs/GCSEs- english system stuff
7A*s 2 As (grades are on an upward trend- I didn't do so well when I was 14, but I worked and now it's a perfect report card)

I also took AS levels for Maths, Physics, Economics and History (I did maths in y11- I think that's grade 10 in America)

for Maths I got an A, so far for AS levels it's been all As, but I haven't gotten the results for the most recent round of tests

(not expecting very high for Phys, Econ and Hist cos I'm doing IB and didn't have any time to revise for them- just wanted some sort of a grade except predicteds, which can be wrong)

IB Predicted
Maths HL- 7
Economics HL-7
History HL-7
Physics SL-7
English SL-7
French SL-7

My recs- one from my history teacher and another from my english teacher/debate coach- I think they'll be awesome- both of them really like me and I tutor students for my history teacher

I competed on an international level at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Trials, came 18th in the world, 6th at persuasive speaking and 12th for interpretive reading

I tutor History and Maths weekly
Tennis
Art (drawing the human face)
I run A LOT

Positions Held-
Debating Team Captain-2007-2010 (probably means the most to me- I was the first person on the team and it's what I work hard at- no joke- week of the debate I'm sleeping at 2 cos I'm perfecting my speech)
House Captain- 2008-2009
Student Council representative (you get elected in my school after making a speech)-
3 times- 2005-2006, 2006-2007,2008-2009

Doing an internship at the Centre For Development Studies in Kerala, India, regarding the historical development of the Kerala model- CDS is pretty well known, they published a paper with the UN in 2005 and laid the foundation for the Kerala model of economic development in 1975

School Awards-

thank you!- really appreciate it, no one in my family's been to the US for college so you guys are REALLY helping me here

karna

U Chicago (EA): High Match
Harvard: Mid reach
Columbia: Low reach/mid reach
U Penn: Low reach (better chance bc of school’s relationship)
Brandeis: match/in
Tufts: Match/high match
NYU: low match
Michigan : Match/high match

The above is a bit harsh only because you are an international student. I certainly think yoiu will get into at least one or two Ivies, though. Good luck!

U Chicago (EA): High Match
Harvard: Mid reach
Columbia: Low reach/mid reach
U Penn: Low reach (better chance bc of school’s relationship)
Brandeis: match/in
Tufts: Match/high match
NYU: low match
Michigan : Match/high match

I agree completely with noreally, since your international.

thank you for your help!

does being an international really hit my chances?

Unfortunately, internationals are held to higher standards when applying to US schools than domestic applicants.

I guess this is a BUMP-

but I have to add one more thing-
In november 08, I went to a province in China and built houses for a week

Bump …

bumpityy- come on guys I need advice!

bump bump bump *sigh

Holy crap. If you manage this I will be very impressed (not that I doubt you of course!). IB looks great on college apps as far as rigor goes.

Your test scores and extracurriculars are very strong as well.

U Chicago (EA) - high match
Harvard - reach
Columbia - reach
U Penn - low reach
Brandeis - low match
Tufts - low match
NYU - low match
Michigan - match

Unfortunately because you’re international, I agree with noreally and Peruviansinger; if you were US I’d say you were into all except the Ivies.

uhmmmmm
good SATs (Im envious)
good ECs (can touch that you are so good at debating)
write good essays
your school list is totally in order
just do it

oh yeah
plz chance me back thankyou

thanks for the replies guys-

just a question- when you say low match? does that mean I have a bad chance? or a good one?

I guess this also doubles a bump=D

bumpitttyyy

What is your intended major?

probably undecided-

chicago- econ I think- im just not very comfortable about choosing so early

You have a good chance at those schools. Why isn’t Stanford on your list? Stanford looks for well-rounded students with a lot of ECs like you do

thanks for replying!

stanford? never really thought about it that much- with the East Coast area I have some family in NY so I thought they’d help me if I had any problems, but I do also have family at cali as well- so I guess it never really crossed my mind=)

any idea about my question on highmatches/low matches?

Columbia: low match
U Penn: low mathc
Brandeis: high match
Tufts:high match
NYU: high match
Michigan :high match
The UPenn, Harvard are all high reach

guys!!! I don’t get low matches!?

does that mean I have a bad chance, or does it mean it’s low so I can get in quite easily?

if the former, I thought U Chicago was harder to get into than Tufts!?
