Yea. I realized that i havent met or seen ANY Asian who went to a selective school with low sat scores, ESPECIALLY the CR portion. I myself scored low on the section, but i still plan to apply selective schools like the Ivies. I'm a little worried though about my cr score. I will retake it, but i dont expect a huge improvement. So i was wondering if any asian was able to make it with low cr scores. thanks.

in the same boat =/.

was english not your first language?

First, change your attitude. You can make a huge improvement in anything you want to, provided you have enough effort and time.

At top schools, all non hooked have high CR scores.

^ word. Most nonhooked applicants have both a great GPA and high test scores, along with good EC's.

That said, if your overall score isn't bad but your CR is just a bit low then I think thats ok. For example if you won a lot of math contests and science competitions and have excellent grades in all your math/science classes, that might be better, but once you get to the top it gets frighteningly competitive. They will use the tiniest flaw in your app to cut down the huge number of applicants they get to the thousand or so that they accept.

thanks for the replies. uh my gpa is a 98, my overall sat score was M:760 CR:600 W:720 (2080). My sat 2s are Math 1C:740 Biology:710 Chemistry:750. My reading seriously is a problem, but do you think that might hurt me greatly? And yes, english was not my first language. And another thing about that, how does the "first generation" thing work? I had no idea that was considered at some schools even like at MIT.

a bit owned in my opinion. there is an unspoken prejudice among whites and other colored people in america against asians. when confronted with the truth, they will vehemently deny it, but it exists. Only the very very best of the chinese, taiwanese, hong kong, singapore stand a chance. Even if you beat the white hick next door who smokes pot all day, doesn't mean you have a chance thanks to the great "equalizer" affirmative action.

Jews, whites, blacks, hispanics, all benefit from this "great institution of justice". I think they should just use financial background rather than skin color. Jews also tend to be much wealthier than the average american, but they are counted as white which helps them.

Here is what affirmative action will do to your sat score (roughly according to a princeton study)

blacks +250
hispanics +200
whites +50 or +0
asians (chinese, hong kong, taiwan, japan, korea) -100 or so

Thus, in order to match a black guy with a 2000, an asian needs a 2350.

Actually, the Princeton study looked like this (old 1600-point scale):

Blacks: +230
Hispanics: +185
Asians: -50
Recruited athletes: +200
Legacies (children of alumni): +160

Whites don't get any benefit.

Yeah, but i said roughly. The princeton study underestimates the problem in my opinion. Asians are totally getting the shaft, not just a nice -50. More like a -100 or -150. A simple -50 is not enough to account for the huge difference in acceptance rates between asians and whites even when considering extracurriculars.

I just don't believe this sort of study. I mean if you count the "points" THAT much, what is the difference between this measure and the point-scale admission method used in Michigan a few years ago? Just be yourself and that is enough.

Are all 2400-ers getting straight As in their universities? The Universities know the best and they know what to do with those who are not overachieving but worthy to be admitted.

o my gosh lol never realized how tough it is for asians...

Lol. My 2380 is only worth a black guy's 2000.

By the way. OP when you say selective do you mean HYPMS? or just average schools like berkeley or washington univesrity at saint louis? HYPMS will be hard especially if you are asian with low SAT and no international level soccer.

aer: I think you're wrong, but i'm not sure.

Being black helps you because you are "graded" against your peers. The sad truth is that not many blacks get high test scores or excel in the classroom statistically. That is why even a 3.8 GPA and a 31 ACT may put you WAY above the pack if you are a black applicant.

Asians on the other hand, need more to stand out. A 3.8 GPA and a 31 ACT suddenly looks bad when you are compared against an applicant pool studded with 4.0 GPA 2380 SAT kids.

Of course, I could (and I think) i'm wrong. Are there different applicant pools for blacks and asians?

yea i did mean HYPMS. why the heck is it so competitive for asians!

it's competitive because lots of asians apply. they do not want 50% asian, so they accept the best ones, hurting the rest. if you are an alaskan native, you are helped at these schools because i dont think many people with your race will be applying to these schools to give you competition.

I don't really know how I can be wrong unless you're saying the study is wrong - I quoted directly from the study - but okay.

Asians are overachieving compared to most other races, and they're overrepresented to boot.

yea so don't apply to HYPSM! hhahahahaha
