Asian at a disadvantage?

You're not at any more disadvantage than caucasians.

the asians in north america really really work alot harder than asians in asia, I didnt know asians are good at math before I came to here. The place I used to live in China, kids are alot lazier than asians here, even than caucasians, they smoke, and some are criminals, but I lived in a small city though

One question I still have in mind though, and I have read this somewhere on here that the you will be analyzed based on where you live in the United States. Like someone said that a student from New Yourk will have a less of a chance than a student from Montana, or something like that. What is this all about? Am I going to be scrutinized based on where I live now? By the way, I live in Washington State. So in the pacific north west. Will this give me an edge, or perhaps lower my chances? I go to a public high school in a good neighborhood.

Geography certainly does have slight effect on your chances.. It really depends on the college. Public universities generally accept more students from in state.

But keeping on topic, do Asians only compete with other Asians, since quotas need to be maintained??

liangshengtm - I'm sure your microcosm applies to most asian cities.

Sorry that was mean. I didn't mean that. I felt like it was asking for it though. I apologize, but as in spanish, I'll lay the blame on your comments that made mine come out. I'm sure that made you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Okay, the hole that I originally dug for myself just got much deeper. Great. Awesome.

I'm a member now. Most people who hears about this would laugh there head off. Colleges changing your SAT scores because of your race!!! But, at the same time, I am a rascist person so it wouldn't surprise me if it were true.
Yes, like the colleges, I do believe that some races are smarter than others but I would never judge a person because of that. Therefore, it is wrong on so many levels for the colleges to do this. (not to mention illegal)
Lol, what CollegeBound2007 said is very funny...................................
and very sad. The girl's father is so stupid that he can't even tell the difference between a textbook and a novel yet he orders her daughter to get straight A's.

It just makes me frustrated that asians are being scrutinized just for checking in that box that says asian. by the way, thanks for your guys' great imputs. This is all the more to make me want to work even harder, since now I have 25, 000 asians to compete with for that very limited spot. Arg...

one of my friends keeps complaining how disadvantaged he is but he's white lol. Seems like there's no way white disadvantage could compare to the disadvantage for asians.

Well, at least in the box, not checking any (assumed white) could not decrease your score by 50.

I wonder what the story is for international students...
I'm pretty sure for Asian countries it's even harder than asian americans?

im a Filipino. [not even filipino-american, a Filipino, living in the philippines (doy haha)], we're considered in the asian group right? is there a disadvantage?

Well, you get minus 50 points for being asian right? So I guess there's a disavantage. I really don't know anything about this topic except what I read here.

"I really don't know anything about this topic"

-Few in here seem to......

What if you - dun dun dun - don't check a box? All applications say that it is optional. But I guess, for some, their name is a dead give away. But for others, isn't it a way of not letting them know that you're Asian?

Hey, I'm gonna try it and I'll tell you guys how it works out by April

Well, if your last name does not give you away, and you do not check the box, the admissions people will at least know that you are not a URM (because why would you hide your race if it would benefit the admissions process). It's also not often that a caucasian would not mark his or her race, so the admissions officer might just assume that you are asian. However, if the assumption is wrong, there might be big problems.

I'm one third asian, caucasion, and native american. What box would a person like me check?

just freaking sucks being an asian

Good food though. :)

Imagine the competition between asians for engineering ......I guess its overwhelming ....
If colleges are not admitting qualified asian students just because they dont want too many asians then its really sad ..... and it will be a loss for the college itself ....
I believe that as an Asian one is automatically categorized into certain stereotypes and so the candidate has to make an extra effort to break the mould and stand out ...

I don't EVEN want to know.

so I'm guessing the take away message is to not mark yourself as Asian... That only helps those with the less obvious names. Well I know I'm not marking asian for UC's. I'm wondering if I should for cmc tho, their asian percentage is 20.

Is there like a box that says Others, for those who aren't 100% asians? I do not even know....

I do not have to worry about engineering, since I am going for business... OH god, what is the competition for business like??? How many other asians will I have beat, to even have a chance of acknowledgement from those admissions officers. Being Vietnamese is great, but when you are competing with other asian minority like korean, or chinese, then it is not so great anymore, since there are alot more of them than vietnamese.
