Im an Asian but Im new to the US and wonder what the Asian stereotype is

ah.

in my school, asian stereotype i’ve received include: we are uber smart in math and science, we have 4.5’s or so, we are bad drivers, and so on… (all jokes.)

oh. in case you get any “eat dog” jokes, just ignore that joke. ;)

how new are you to the US?

i

Asians are smart. really smart. and even if they get 2400s and play 500 sports, they could still get rejected from Harvard.

Smart, science/math-oriented, quiet.

And then the anti-stereotype Asian: [YouTube - America’s Next Top Model Interview - Sheena](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w5kJUk4s4E)

I’m still ****ed she didn’t win.

hey but wait
aren’t some of the Asians born in the US? Why are they not so good at verbal?
Why are they bad drivers?
Is that notion for Asian guys only? What about girls?
And Sheena’s not that pretty. Just like Bobby Lee. Unique

dude asians are terrible drivers, its the truth, just like women are terrible drivers too ;)

I didn’t mean looks-wise, her personality is the opposite of the stereotypical Asian girl.

That girl was the opposite of a stsreotypical Asian, that’s what made her cool.

I can’t believe I just admitted to watching that show.

[Stereotypes of East Asians in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Stereotypes of East Asians in the United States - Wikipedia)

^^^ That’ll tell you everything you need to know, but I’ll tell you the ones I see as being most prevalent.

The biggest one is undoubtedly the “Model Minority” stereotype, that Asians ace all their classes, especially math and science, that they play instruments, probably violin or piano, and are generally perfect.

Asian men are stereotyped as effeminate. “They have small sexual organs and they’re meek and awkward” - that sort of thing. Some also consider them to be misogynistic.

Asian women are very heavily fetishized. It’s creepy.

hey what about South East asian man?

Let Me Google that For You?

[Stereotypes of South Asians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Stereotypes of South Asians - Wikipedia)

^^^If you are SE Asian and you look like an East Asian to Americans, like if you’re Lao or Vietnamese, you’ll probably get the East Asian stereotypes.

They list a lot of Indian stereotypes on the South Asian page but I’ve never heard of most of those. Of course, I’m unaware of many stereotypes. Nonetheless, the one I most commonly hear for Indians is that they’re smart and they’re all going to be doctors or something. Or they are taxi drivers. Oh, and tech support. I think the other ones, like lustful Indian male and monkey brain eaters (What?) might be mainly British stereotypes.

i really wanted sheena to win too!! :[

oh yeah and that we don’t have social lives outside of “ping pong club” and “computer science team” or whatever.

Play piano or violin
Doesn’t play contact sports
Plays tennis
Gets straight As
Very socially awkward

Asians are awesome at tennis/ping pong
Asians suck at driving
Asians are super super smart
Asians will only play the violin or piano
Asians have at least one parent who is in an engineering or engineering related field
Asians have small… self-confidence

Theres a hella lot more - many pointing to the nerdiness of asians or social akwardness

ping pong is the ****z!!!

I’ve never been able to play ping pong or tennis. I have zero hand-eye coordination.

Aww, Ping Pong is so much fun…

And badminton.

I’m opposite to many stereotypes.

I’m not <5’8, I’m 6’2 and 230 pounds
I hate tennis or pingpong
I suck at Starcraft
I get 3.0 grades
I’m actually a good driver
etc

you forgot the asian premeds and asian engineering majors…with obsessive, controling parents
