I am against Affirmative Action for all the reasons 08.08.1991 stated. I am Indian (country), by the way.

For AA based on Socio Economic factors.

Well I'm asian, and I'm not against affirmative action . The thing is that everyone who gets in to a top school is academically qualifyed to succeed at the school; affirmative action is used to pick one qualifyed student over another since there are more qualifued students than availiable spots. I personally like affirmative action because it allows for a more diverse student body (which is important to me for a college). If it wasn't for affirmative action more top colleges would have a student body like Berkeley's which I wouldn't be able to stand.

except they honestly don't care if you're able to stand it or not.

because college is there for people who want to learn, not for you particularly as a social function.

I respectfully disagree with you. Colleges do care about our concerns because if we don't like how they run the place they won't get us as students. And the social experience of college is just as important as the academic; but you can spend the next four years in front of a computer taking online classes if that suits you.

I mean "you" particularly.

Nice job in the Cornell part though.

I am against it...

people need to get in with their abilities and not race

actually..if u take a look here..asians r at a disadvantage BECAUSE of affirmative action

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_minority

A 2005 Princeton study showed Asians (not whites) bear nearly 80% of the cost of affirmative action in college admissions. Nearly four out of every five spots given to blacks and Hispanics in an affirmative-action regime would go to Asians in a purely merit-based system.

The average cost or benefit of college affirmative action in terms of SAT points (on 1600-point scale) is as follows:

Blacks: +230

Hispanics: +185

Asians: −50

Recruited Athletes: +200

"Legacies" (children of alumni): +160

That was the study I was citing. The problem is that it assumes a post-affirmative-action world would be color blind, which is false. I firmly believe that without affirmative action, Asians would still "lose" 50 points.

yea but even if they lost those 50 points, every1 else would not gain at least 160+ points...theres a diff..i dont mind losing the 50, if i know i'll still get in over some1 else cuz i am smarter than that other person, like some1 who is a legacy. they shouldnt b able 2 get in cuz their parents got in before them. so what. at least my -50 points would b higher than whatever points they had

against. I started a huge thread about this not so long ago.

Affirmative Action and quotas don't provide real "diversity". The fact that we even still consider racial diversity in a particular setting "diverse" in the 21st century is absurd.

"Circumstances of birth are nothing more than random, and should never be a source of pride or shame."

Real diversity comes from individuals' views and ideas. Especially in intellectual institutions, this type of diversity should surpass all others.

The sad fact is that in this country, only blacks, Hispanics, Irish Catholics, Native Americans, and Muslims are "allowed" to be victims. If a Jew or an Asian faces discrimination, or is quota-ed by a top college, it's ok because we managed to be successful in this country even though we started out in slums as well. The Politically Correct mafia could care less about Jews and Asians.

I completely agree.

As an Asian (Taiwanese) I have to say I'm for it. Seriously if we were to assume that ALL URMS are in top school's unjustly, that is only 20-25% of the seats. And that is assuming ALL when we ALL know the figure is drastically lower. Thus, if I get rejected from college I will know it will be for other reasons most likely rather than some URM stole my seat. (Anyways with 2090 I dont think I'm fit for an Ivy either way)

For it.
