Hi!
I'm applying to Duke and I might as well get to the point.
I heard that there are literally no Asians at Duke and I'm kinda paranoid since I'm from California.....
Are there any Asians at Duke? I'm not trying to be racist (well kinda).

And the other question,
How's their tennis team?
I played like 14 years and have a whole bunch of stuff for it
but I'm wondering how it is.

Duke is almost 30% Asian, so that is hardly none. There are more Asians at Duke than many other elite institutions, just not at the Berkeley / Cal Tech level. You will find a very comfortable atmosphere at Duke.

And the men’s varsity tennis team is routinely among the best in the nation - typically in the top 20. To make varsity, you have to be one of the top 70 or so players in the nation as ranked by the USTA. If you’re not routinely playing at the 'Zoo or the Easter Bowl, then you probably won’t be good enough for Duke tennis. And if you have no idea what the previous sentence means, then you don’t play enough competitive tournaments to be recruited by Duke. There’s no shame in that, though, as the team is really really good.

Duke does have a competitive club tennis team, though, that plays other institutions. It’s not nearly the level of varsity, but there are some solid players and you practice a couple times a week. They actually won club nationals last year against the likes of club teams from Wisconsin, Texas, and Michigan. You have to tryout to make the club team even. If you can’t make that team, there’s always intramurals.

From the class profile on Duke’s website, last year’s class was 25% Asian, but I think the overall total is closer to 20%. The last published stat I saw was 19% overall in 2009.

Oh, and the women’s tennis team is ranked #7 in the nation and the men are #15. If you’re not a blue chip 5-star or at least a 5-star, forget it.
