I've tried looking online and searching through the forum for this topic, but I can't really find a suitable answer. I'm an Asian male and I'm wondering how receptive both students on campus as well as the Durham community are to Asians. I'm not saying I'm going to go out and search for other Asians to be friends, but I just want to know how I'd be accepted.

Also, I've been considering applying to Duke ED. I know Duke is my top choice after doing a lot of research. However, will never having visited the campus be a disadvantage in the selection process?

just a quick note, I strongly recomend visiting a campus before you apply ED, but the area is rather diverse, I saw a lot of colored people and whites, I wasn’t on the lookout for asians but I am sure they were there

Duke says they don’t care if you visit campus, but from experience it definitely helps in your essays to talk about your visit, but they are optional so i guess you can make it not hurt you. But if you want to apply ED, i would strongly recommend visiting just so you know the “feel” is right and you like it as much as you do on paper. I’m not sure how much diversity is in the area racially as I did not spend much time in Durham after my visit, but I’d guess you could find a majority of people who don’t care what color skin you have/what your heritage is.

I’m not sure the percentage of Asians and all (But I’d guess they are accepted and treated equally) but there are probably not as many Asians like there are at MIT, Berkeley, and UCLA, etc, but I’d guess they are still treated equally by a far majority of the student body

Asians are the greatest minority here, I think, and if we aren’t, there’s still a lot of Asians. I’m Asian too, and nobody really cares about the color of your skin. Yeah, there are some Asians that make friends with only Asians (or are friends with majority Asians), but I found it really easy to make friends with white/black/hispanic,etc people. It’s weird too, because I hung out with Asian people only in HS, but in Duke, it’s quite the opposite.

Asians make up about a quarter of the entire student body. It is a HUGE presence and you shouldn’t have any issues. The school’s demographics has a much greater influence on your experience than the surrounding community, but in case you were curious Durham is 45% Caucasian (which include 9% Hispanic), 44% Black, and 4% Asian.

Campus visits aren’t considered at all when making admissions decisions. However, not visiting could potentially negatively impact your “Why Duke?” essay’s impact, but I’d think if you’re applying ED, it’s not something they’d concern themselves with. I would recommend visiting before applying ED though to make sure the campus feels right to you. Good luck!
