Ask a BU Freshman

There’s LAN in every room. It’s not slower.

Emlett, nobody seemed to have answered your questions so I’ll give it a shot. You do have a lot though so cut me a little slack if I miss one or two!

If you live in West and go to CAS/ENG, you will quickly realize that it’d be a waste to take the BUS back and forth every single time. You’ll probably just walk it most of the time, unless it’s freezing cold or raining/snowing. Unfortunately, the BUS generally is pretty cramped…especially in the conditions that I mentioned above, since everyone going from one end to the other wants to take it then. Sometimes, it’s schedule is inconvenient too. If you wanted to live in Warren, we do have a small fitness room downstairs. You could still go to Fitrec too. The walk isn’t that terrible and you wouldn’t have to worry about being late like with class.

You can’t own a microwave or micro-fridge at BU. You can either rent a microfridge from them or just buy your own mini-fridge. I’d recommend splitting the cost with your roommate and renting one. Buy a Britta pitcher to filter water from the sink and store in your fridge. It saves you SO much money (you need to replace a filter about every 3 months) and is cleaner/tastes better. The dining hall doesn’t have bottles of any drink. You could bring down a reusable water bottle and fill it with their dispenser water… but they really don’t like you doing that either.

It wasn’t Spring Break on the 2nd. If you stay over a break and are in most of the large dorms, you need to pay a discounted rate to stay in Hotel Commonwealth. They give security guards the time off, so students can’t stay there. You can leave whatever you need in your room though. They do inspections but a BU official is always with whoever does them. Laptops are BY FAR the norm here though…and might be something you’d really want to consider purchasing. Bringing your computer elsewhere can be super helpful in college. I don’t know one person with a desktop.

You get new dorms for the summer if you stay. You can’t stay during winter break to take classes. It’s the same Hotel Commonwealth deal as Spring Break.

Between your time at the gym, commutes back and forth from West and east campus, homework, and school, it’s probably going to be tough to have 4-6 hours to just practice a lot… I don’t know specifics about that though. Maybe you could work something out through CFA and use their rooms. If you’re doing music through some group, you could scan in there. You can practice longer than an hour.

It’s not two courses in each school. It’s two in each area of CAS (Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Math/Computer Science) or core. But no, we do not require PE courses. They offer some cool ones though, even though they are often harder to get as a freshman.

This isn’t a huge factor in my decision to attend BU, but I’m wondering about the party/social scene there. I’m from the south, so I’m used to huge frat parties in the houses being available to everyone every weekend.

Since there isn’t really a huge frat scene at BU, are there parties every weekend? I understand that upperclassmen who live off campus tend to have house parties, but will underclassmen easily be able to find something to do every weekend? Also, do most people at BU even care about being able to find a party, or would they rather do other things?

You’re from the South? Where from?

North Carolina

Hello! I’m going to BU this fall.
Is it better to bring a laptop from my hometown?

Anyone know anything about Early Decision? Or about the amount of financial aid you receive when applying Early Decision?

If you need a lot of financial aid in order to attend BU, you should NOT apply under early decision. As you know, it is a binding application that you should not risk if you are seeking substantial aid. The financial aid offered under ED and RD are the same, or at least they should be.

does anyone know if you change the major you chose when you applied to BU? for example, can i switch from biology to premed or something else?

I’m from Texas.

can someone elaborate on the internships available for BU undergrads? are they promising like the success stories i’ve heard/easy to obtain?

Could anyone tell me about double concentrations? Can I do it in SMG?

You totally can (and most people do). Might not be possible to do it without summer classes if you come with no external credits.

Hanita, you and lauren are really helpful.

fuxiao, I would definitely get the laptop in advance. It’ll be easier than going off on your own to get one here. If you want to wait, there’s a Best Buy near South Campus in Landmark Center. But, as far as I can tell, nearly everyone buys their laptop in advance and brings it from home.

ames14, internships accessiblity varies department to department. We do have a Career Services office that has tons of internships opportunities to look at right there though. Lots of departments will send people majoring in their field emails about internships. If you seek out help from one of the offices or an advisor, you can definitely find them. It’s sometimes hard to get one with competition but you definitely can. It’s tougher as a freshman/sophomore though.

Seachai86442, I’m glad we’re helping! I loved learning from these type of things when I was getting ready for BU last year. I love it now and totally want to pass the favor onward. And admittedly, I have my own little questions sporadically still about housing and so forth that get helped in return.

Lauren I have a feeling we know each other.

Yes!! I’ve been thinking this recently given the username and various hints ala SMG too but figured it’d be too small of a world!

Ah, it’s all very Lost though… recognizing each other from “another reality”. Haha! If you get that, you are who I think you are. But, if not, I’m very sorry that my Lost reference goes by unappreciated.

Hello,

My D will be in Sargent College. Which dorm would be best for her?

Lauren hahahaha YES. Very Lost indeed.

niish, I’d say Warren, Towers, or HoJo if she wants private bathrooms.

Hello everyone! I have been accepted into Boston University and wanted to get some more information about the biomedical engineering department at BU.

First of all, I don’t really know whether or not I wish to major in biomed. engineering so I enrolled in CAS. Do you know if I can take some classes in the school of engineering, decide whether or not it’s right for me, and declare biomed. engineering as my major even though I am in CAS? Would I have to transfer schools?

Second: As a freshman at the university (or upperclassmen) what would you say are the university’s two most important assets to an undergraduate education?

Conversely, what do you think are two areas of improvement for the university?

Finally, what are the prospects of BU graduates in landing a job immediately after getting their BAs or BS’s?

Thank you for taking your time in answering these. I really want a variety of opinions so I can get a better feel of the college.
