Ask a BU Student (2011)

The campus is a pain sometimes if you have to get from one end to the other, since it’s almost a mile and a half from one end to the other, which you wouldn’t get with a more compact campus. There is the free shuttle and the T, but getting to the gym sometimes can become a hassle if you live near Kenmore like I do.

Otherwise, its actually pretty nice that the campus borders a few different areas - Kenmore to the east which is more high end city, south campus has more of a neighbourhood feel that turns into Brookline, a more suburban area. Then to the west there’s Allston, which is a great student neighbourhood with lots of ethnic and cheaper restaurants and bars.

if you live in West Campus, there is more green area immediately surrounding the dorms (plus the food is known to be the one of the best spots on campus, and you are next to StuVi, which has million dollar views and a lovely study spot on the top floor.

DD lived in West last year, and chose to live there again as a sophomore. She would tell you that she has never been in such good shape - between FitRec immediately next door and the amount of walking she does between classes, she has not gained a single pound and is in much better shape than she was when she left.

The T goes right down the center of the campus, and we also have the BU bus. However, she almost always chooses to walk unless the weather is really bad or the T happens to show up at just the perfect time. Faster just to walk! If you go back to visit and/or decide to attend and go to orientation, where comfortable shoes!

Which Campus dorms is suggested and close to the College of Engineering?

I really can’t recommend Warren for freshmen enough. It’s the biggest freshman dorm, right near the center of campus - the only schools that are a bit of a walk are CFA, SHA and CGS.

I met 90% of my current friends either by living with them on the same floor in Warren or through someone I knew from my floor. If you really, really need a quiet dorm, Warren isn’t your best bet, because it is kind of cramped, and as you can guess it turns into a bit of s***show on weekends with ~40 college freshman all on one floor, but to me, it’s the absolute best way to make friends as a freshman.

Agreed with the post above me. I’m currently a freshman in CAS and I live in Warren. Although some people complain it’s old and cramped I love it. I’ve made so many friends just from my floor. Warren has this sense of community that really makes me feel at home. I recommend it if you’re going to have most of your classes in East Campus.

I am a freshman that transferred out of another university and joined BU for this semester. I have moved in, met my hallmates, been to my classes, but there is still a little missing.

I was wondering how I can join clubs/organizations in the middle of the year/ beginning of spring semester? Is there any sort of club “showcase” I can attend like in the beginning of the year or will it be a little more difficult?

I would like to start meeting more people and making some friends :(

Great thread - thanks for all the helpful info!

gandhii,

I know there is a spring expo specifically for students in a situation like yours; I just don’t know when the exact date is. :frowning: I’m checking with the person on staff for the club I’m in, so I’ll post again when I get an answer.

I will be waiting!

Thanks AbilityNow!

How long does it take to get from west campus to CAS

Did anyone know when is parents weekend for class 2017

@garetjax - it’s about a 10 - 15 min. walk depending on how fast you walk.

@drgreenhead - It will be in October, not sure they have a date set yet, but check their calendar on their website.

gandhii,

I’m really sorry I didn’t reply to this until just now!! No one knew when the date for the Spring Expo was. I hope you managed to find out or find a way to get involved on campus. If you haven’t, let me know if I can do anything to help! I feel bad. :(

Hey how is grade deflation at BU? =[

Hello everyone! I have a question. I’m a biology major/pre-med and I have read it’s really hard to get an A IF you don’t work hard. By work/study hard, what do you mean? How many hours/week to get an A for the science classes? I’m planning to go to med school, so GPA is pretty important and I would like to have an idea of how much studying I need to do to organize my time.

ALSO! I’m going to be a 21-year old freshman (long story). I’m really really excited to start. I don’t have a problem being the oldie or rooming with 18 year olds but as far as housing goes, should I go with Warren/West and room with younger peeps or do you recommend that I go with housing where freshmen can room with upperclassmen? Just want to hear your guys’ opinions…

Thank you!!

Exhaustive discussion of grade deflation at BU is in the past threads of this forum. Long story short, it doesn’t exist.

@br2pi5

Premedical majors are difficult and competitive. Biology is as expected, its more the chemistry department that makes classes really difficult. It will take long hours of study to become well-versed in the hard sciences, but this is expected for someone looking to get into a medical school. Of course hours required are relative to the class and your personal proficiency. All I can tell you for sure is that you will need to sacrifice a degree of your social life to really do well, but that isn’t different from any other school.

@Gladken: thank you! this might be a stupid question but I got a 5 in the AP Biology exam and I found it really easy. Would I feel lost in the bio classes at BU in terms of the difficulty of the subject and depth or not so much? If that makes any sense…

I don’t think AP classes are similar to college courses…

Honestly it isn’t a great idea to be pre-med at bu as I’m finding out. BIO 108 is curved to a C+ think about that… the average is a C+ in a class where most of the people are premed and realistically need a B+ in that class. Chem 101-102 are also hard classes that have two weekly online hw assignments and are in general very time consuming and in general pretty miserable.

How is recruitment at BU? Do kids at SMG get jobs in big firms like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, etc?
