Ask a BU Student (2011)

I have a question, how would living in a single room for my first year affect the whole friend making process?

Sorry if you already discussed this, but what are the GenEd requirements for COM(Film/Television major)? I’m trying to figure out what classes I should take first semester

@VennFenrir, I wouldn’t recommend living in a single as a freshman. I think having a roommate is an important component on the freshman year experience. Getting a single in a prominently freshman dorm would be difficult too. Many of the older students who choose to stay in Warren take the singles in advance. If you get stuck in a single in a brownstone or any primarily upperclassman residence, you definitely wouldn’t have as many opportunities to make friends as most students. You still could make friends, but would have to go more out of your way to find them.

@megakel, This goes over the degree requirements for a COM Film & TV studies major!
[Undergraduate Degree Requirements College of Communication Boston University](http://www.bu.edu/com/academics/film-tv/undergraduate/degree-requirements/)

Urk, the problem is I sometimes have night terrors when I’m stressed. I’ve asked around and people have told me to get a single because I might(will) disturb occasionally, but I really REALLY do NOT want to live in a single freshman year. I’m so torn between the single and double.

Being such a critical part of your admissions into medical school, what sort of internship/volunteer/research opportunities does BU offer for it’s premed students?

@Megakel: You will be taking WR100 and COM101 and two electives to fulfill your foundation requirements. www.bu.edu/com/files/2009/12/foundation_reqs_pla.pdf

There are many different WR100 classes, keep that in mind and look through them because some are more interesting than others. You can find the list of the different WR100 classes online (I’m in class and it’s about to end but I will look it up for you later if I ave time).

SO basically: think about what kind of wr100 class you want, and what two electives you want to take. I would recommend RN 101, MA 112, MA 120, PS101, PH101, CS103 or any languages.

As a COM student you need to be at 2nd semester level of a language. For example you have to take LS111 and LS112 but don’t need to take anymore than that. If you place out and got into LS 211 for example, you don’t need to take languages at all for the rest of your college career unless you plan to minor/major/concentrate.

Oh and LS=language spanish. LI = language italian etc…

@ VennFenrir: a single in Warren is not that bad… better hand in your survey fast! and write in the notes that you only want a single in Warren otherwise you want room mates anywhere else.

Hi!!! So I’m 80% confident about BU now that I have Gates and that I may get more money from BU (still doubtful b/c everyone knows the administration sucks >.>). Anyway, I got lots of ?s. =D
Please read if you have spare time/love helping people and not annoyed by randomness

  1. Kitchens: So I actually plan on living in Warren/The Towers; do these dorms have kitchens on the floors? If not, do any dorms have kitchens in the suites or on the floors? I love cooking and homecooked food, so as long as I can find a stove, I’m good.
  2. Housing: Hojo is #3 on my housing preference list, and if I go there, how good are the lofts? I’ve never really seen one or slept on one. Are they more dorm-y or more annoying?
  3. Student Insurance: I heard the insurance is about $1.9k/year. That’s pretty decent for the northeast. What exactly does it cover? Dental? Prescriptions from Walgreens? Visits to the BU Student Health Center or a doctor off-campus?
  4. Academics: How strong is the neuroscience program? I recently switched to it as I plan on majoring in neuroengineering in grad school and wanted a strong background in neuroscience. Also, I know biomedical engineering is a really strong program, but are those opportunities (research, internships, etc.) offered to students minoring in BME?
  5. Fridges/microwaves: Can I put them in my dorm? If I have a roommate, can we split the costs for the BU microwave/fridge, or should I buy a fridge before coming to campus?
  6. People: Though collegeboard says only 49% of students are white, almost every review about BU I’ve read from various sites always mentions the stereotypical rich, white, fake, sexually promiscuous girls. And the frat boys. I have a high tolerance level and am really open-minded about meeting new people. So, for anyone currently there, does the majority of the school fall into this category? Honestly, I’m a poor Asian student, and I want to know who I’m going to encounter at orientation and live with for four years.
7. $$$$$$$$$$$: I heard about BU’s quickie job service. What’s the average payment for that (or it is totally random), and is research included in this?
I told you it was a lot of ?s, but I need to know about my almost home for the next 4 years. Thanks to anyone who can answer any question. =D If you have ?s about Gates, ask me.

Hello, so I applied for financial aid but got NO scholarships from BU. only a grant from the government which covers…nothing.

I tried to appeal my financial aid but I just got an email today telling me how they denied it.

I really want to go to BU but I don’t know what to do…Go one year and transfer to a school that’ll give me more aid?

I was just wondering, if I do really well freshman year at BU, is there a chance for them to give me more money for sophomore year? I don’t know if it is worth it to be in debt and attend BU for four years or just go somewhere who will give me more money.

Plus, BU is the only school who accepted me and two other schools waitlisted me…

Do you have any tips on me trying to gather some more money, (besides local scholarships.)

I am very stressed and frustrated :/

Answers to your questions:

There are no kitchens in West or Warren Towers. Some of the Brownstones have kitchens in their basements. Stuvi and some South Campus brownstones also have kitchens. I would recommend living a year without a stove…

I don’t live in HoJo but I would say they are liveable. They save space and it’s like sleeping on a top bunk, but without another be underneath.

BU uses [Aetna Student Health](http://www.aetnastudenthealth.com) You will find the information you need on that site (Click ‘Members’ then type in 'Boston university)

BU has a strong neuroscience program. I can’t say much more though because I do not know much about it.

You can bring your own fridge but not your own microwave. If you want both a microwave and a fridge you should order a microfridge from BU and split the costs with your room mate ($250/year). They want you to use their microfridge because when the microwave is being used the fridge turns off - it saves energy or something. It will be in your room regardless of whether or not you want it and if you don’t want it, you just leave it outside of your room and people will go around collecting them. And if you don’t leave it outside they will know to charge you. You should talk to your room mate about it and splitting costs.

People may be wealthy here but not everyone. And those that are wealthy don’t really act it, in my opinion at least. I think people here are very nice and humble. Also Greek life is only 17% (or something like that) at BU. and there’s about 20% or 25% (i forget) asians. Honestly, the type of people that BU attracts is great. People are really kind.

Quickie Jobs are awesome. They are one time jobs for quick money. The jobs range from babysitting, garden work, walking dogs, filing for a day, moving, catering and yes research (not doing research but acting as a research test subject). Payment also varies. It can be $10 an hour or $125 a job. It depends.

@ parkhannahkrap:
Try calling rather than e-mailing the financial aid office and see what can be done. If you do really well freshman year I do not think that they will give you a scholarship =/ But I’m not sure. I think that you should definitely call. Also try http://www.fastweb.com/</a> for more scholarships. good luck!

Hi, so I’m most likely going to be going to BU next year, so I had a few questions that I wanted to ask.

What kind of meal plan do they have (or none at all- do I have to get my own food)

How many classes per semester can you take?

What’s the language requirement for CAS (I’m going to be majoring in CS, and I’m not really a FL kind of guy)?

Is it possible to place out of classes without an AP (for example, I took the AP CS exam a couple of years ago and didn’t do too well. I’ve gotten a lot better, even held a programming job, and I was wondering if there are placement exams that BU hold, or if AP credit is the only way to skip a class. I’ve taken AP CS at me school already, and I don’t want to sit through and learn the same material again)?

Are BU students into sports? I recently visited and I didn’t feel that sports were a big presence on campus.

For sports it depends on where you are. If you’re in East Campus there’s obviously not a lot of room to play, but over in West there’s a huge portion of the student body that plays on intramural teams like Football, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Indoor Soccer, ect. Also in the fall and late spring/summer people play pick-up games on Nickerson Field. Always a ton of people playing racketball/tennis in FitRec.

-Are the dorms coed or single gender?
-What is the most common accepted SAT and ACT score for prospective students applying to the Management school?
-Is BU more urban or suburban?

thanks

For kids in Warren, how do you get to Fitrec say in the evening or when it is snowed or has snowed? Related question, is it fairly safe to walk around at night (before midnight) by yourself or should you really have a buddy… like to walk to the library?

Campus itself is really safe at night. However, that doesn’t mean you should really be strolling about alone at 3 in the morning. Comm Ave is very well lit and so I usually felt safe on campus. Once you step foot off campus though, it’s a bit shadier. BU also has a great program called the Student Escort Security Service. You can call someone to walk you home from anywhere on campus if it’s late and you don’t want to walk alone. The service is free and is available even later on the weekends.

@Shart432: I’d say a lot of the population is into sports and/or fitness. We are Div 1, and I think a lot of students get into the hockey/basketball games.

@thefalcon: When I lived in Warren, I’d usually make the trek to FitRec on foot. I think the BUS (BU’s shuttle bus that comes every ~20 minutes) might make a stop at or near FitRec, but I’m not sure. The other option is waiting for the T, but that costs $2 each way (unless the train is packed and they can’t see you/don’t charge you).
Walking to the library from Warren is definitely fine. If you’re worried about walking anywhere on campus, take BUBailey’s suggestion and call the Student Escort service. I’ve never used them and don’t know anyone who has, but they’re there for a reason and I’m sure they act as a great safeguard.

@ohsochristine: Dorms tend to be single gender by room, co-ed by floor. There are specialty houses and specialty single-sex floors, though.

I would check BU’s admissions stats for average scores, as I have no knowledge of them. Not sure if BU releases average scores by College/School, though, so you may just get an overall average if you do a search.

BU is definitely an urban campus. It is right in the center of Boston, which is a large, bustling city. The campus is pretty seamlessly integrated into the city. This is both bad and good – it’s a great thing to not be in the middle of nowhere if your computer breaks/you need something from the pharmacy that a school store doesn’t carry/you want non-campus food/you want to take the T to get even deeper into the city or into the suburbs. However, the urbanized campus can also brings city-level noise. In my opinion, the urban nature of BU is part of what makes the school itself feel like less of a community.

@Ohsochristine- dorms are coed, although there are floors that are specifically all-female because there are slightly more females than males on campus. I acutally live on an all-girls floor and like it, it’s not as chaotic at night and the girls are really nice. BU is more urban. We’re literally in Boston. But it’s not overwhelming like NYC can be, Boston is a great college town.

@Wang12345- see above for language requirement. There’s lots of meal plans. Go to bu.edu/housing and click on the dining plans link.

@wang12345:
1 - Meal plans can be found on this website: [Dining plans BU Housing Boston University](BU Meal Plans | Dining Services). I would suggest the 330 plan which means you get 330 for the year. Unlimited is pretty useless in my opinion unless your really do eat a lot and often. Anyway, you can change meal plans during the first seven (i think seven) weeks of the semester. It’s super easy and fast, so meal plans is honestly nothing to stress about at all.

2 - As a freshman you cannot overload courses. So you would be taking 4 courses (16 credits). You can also choose to take a PDP course which is a non-credit course at FitRec such as Rockclimbing, dancing, tennis, etc.

3 - I’m not sure, but you will definitely be able to find that information online

4 - I’m pretty sure you can’t place out unless you took an AP or IP or SAT. You can call and ask to double check though

@Shart432: No, there’s almost no sports presence at BU (which also means not many jocks or bro-ish guys). BU is really into hockey though, but it’s actually not that big of a deal although it is fun. There are intramural sports however that I know people are involved in such as Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Lacrosse, etc. There is also a quidditch team. Oh and if you ski or snowboard there is a ski/snoboard club and a snowboard team.

@ ohsochristine: depends on what dorm. Warren, West and Towers are the most common freshman dorms. Warren and West are co-ed and Towers has single sex floors. BU is more urban but in it’s own bubble. We basically own a segment of commonwealth and will find yourself almost stuck in that bubble and only leaving for certain occasions (parties, shopping, restaurants, etc)

@thefalcon: Walk, Take the T or take the BUs. BU is pretty safe actually in my opinion. I don’t think you would need a walking buddy - just be smart. Be attentive, be careful, etc. If you end up in Warren Towers the library is literally across the street but it closes around 2am (although the student union is working on getting it to be 24/7). Most dorm buildings have study lounges which are really great places to get your work done.

How do you feel about the weather and diversity? Is there a lot of internship competition in the city because of the surrounding colleges? How is financial aid usually (does it generally stay the same all four years)? Can anyone majoring in film give me some information on how good the program is? Thanks!
