Ask a BU Student (2011)

This is what I want to know too. Considering that BU is still a fine school, we’re talking about competition from Harvard and MIT.

How well regarded is BU in Boston anyways?

The weather is reallly hot in the beginning. A fan is a must. Then it gets reallllly cold. And then the spring is pretty nice, minus the April showers.

Weather wise I would definitely suggest: a heavy winter jacket, a rain jacket, rain boots, a strong umbrella (the wind is strong here), and a fan.

Internship opportunities are everywhere. I don’t see competition as a problem. Plus, BU is well regarded in Boston. Also, colleges like Harvard and MIT are far from BU so they don’t really take our internship opportunities near here

Do freshman live at Hojo? I was also wondering if I’m way behind than those accepted by Regular Decision because I was wait listed and just got my acceptance.

I hear BU has a better reputation outside of Boston. From an alum, I heard it has a great reputation in NYC and Southern Cali.

Is this true?

Judging by the strong international student presence, I assume it also has a great international reputation too?

if i go to the late orientation, will i not be able to sign up for the classes i want? im going to the august one

hi everyone! im a freshman transfer student and im in love with bu! i just recently got accepted, but i need to know how generous they are with financial aid because i cant afford the full tuition price so if anyone has any information i would really appreciate it!

BU catalog

Can anyone tell me which of these two might be a good option?
I have been reading reviews and it seems the consensus is to decide based on the coverage area.
also, I would like to buy the iphone in the US and have it shipped to India. Will there be any potential problems with this?

thanks much, a

Just curious if anyone knows if BU will decrease your financial aid if you move to off campus housing in later years. There would be no point in moving off campus for cheaper housing if BU just deducts 12k off your financial aid.

@apply2school: You need a social security number to order the iPhone online from either ATT and Verizon so I don’t think you can get it shipped to India.

Both networks have good coverage in Boston. The big difference are the GSM/CDMA networks - try reading some comparison reviews to figure out which one you want. (i.e.: [iPhone 4 on AT&T vs. Verizon (comparison chart) | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews](http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20028154-233.html))

I’ll be getting an iPhone from Verizon since they offer unlimited bandwidth and better international rates.

@shaedow BU does not deduct fin aid for living off campus, at least to my knowledge. The cost of living amount of fin aid allotted remains the same no matter what you’re actually paying. you should call them to double check, but I’m almost positive this would not happen.

i’m a senior and im already accepted but does it matter if i do bad on my ap exams? i don’t plan to screw them up on purpose but there are certain subjects that i think i would benefit doing again in college. if i have A’s and B’s in all my classes, will 1’s and 2s on some of my AP’s change my admissions decision? (i don’t plan to report them btw)

No, you just won’t get credit for them.

@BUbailey, thanks, just something that occured to me, but won’t affect me for a while seeing as I’m only an entering freshman.

What is the culture like at BU when it comes to drugs and alcohol. Substances were a huge part of the culture at my high school n I am looking for a different experience when it comes to college. All I have read has not gave me much insight on what it is like at BU. I have read that the administration is pretty conservative though. What do you student have to say about it?

@ogodcollege: If you PM me I can give you a more indepth answer, but basically if you’re not looking for substances you won’t have trouble avoiding it. If, on the other hand, you are looking for things like that you will find it. It’s pretty 50/50 in my opinion - depends on who you hang out with I guess. Like I said, PM me if you want a more indepth answer.

As for administration. It’s really strict but mostly with alcohol and weed. If you’re drunk and caught by security you can/will be taken to the hospital which means fines and a penalty (usually probation). If you drink in the rooms its a small penalty as well, which is usu probation. Weed on the other hand is much more strict…

I rec’d info in the mail asking if we wanted to purchase a complete set of bedding for our sons dorm room at BU. The letter claims that the beds in the dorms contain extra long mattresses and that they recommend that you purchase their sheets mattress pads, etc. Of course it comes at a cost of $200 or more. Was just wondering if this is really necessary as we already have purchased some sheets etc. Is this BU’s way of getting even more money out of us, on top of all the other fees?! or, I am I just be overreacting. Just wondering.

Lots of schools offer those packages, not just BU. If you don’t want it, dont’t buy it. As long as you purchased twin XL sheets, you should be fine.

@fishymom, thanks very much!

I got the same thing, and it looks like its actually a pretty good deal. It comes with a hell of a lot of stuff for $200, as well as it being easy to pick up. I doubt you could find as much stuff separately for any cheaper. I actually ordered it earlier tonight.
