Ask a BU Student (2011)

Are there any upper classmen in Warren or are they all freshman?

writeone, there are a couple scattered sophomores mixed in on each floor. The ratio of freshmen to upperclassmen is huge though with freshmen in the overwhelming majority.

Does being a URM have a big impact on odds for winning trustee scholarship? (im not)
Also is it totally merit based or is there an unspoken need portion too?

This was asked on the parent facebook page but no one replied so thought I would post it here…

Are laptop locks a good idea for dorm rooms? Also, have seen small room safes that attach to the beds, good idea?

@harvard5 the trustee is all merit based. URM status might have a slight impact, but it’d be more helpful for something like the MLK scholarship

bkcsmn99: I’ve never heard of someone breaking into a room and stealing things. As long as both roommates lock the door every time they go out, their belongings should be safe.

If you’re gonna keep large amounts of cash in your room and you can’t trust your roommate completely, the small safe might be useful.

okay great thanks…I am going to post this answer on the Parents facebook page…

(it would really stink if you couldn’t trust your roommate!)

I’m coming into BU with a Dean’s Scholarship, but I heard that after a semester or two, we can apply for a higher amount of merit aid depending on GPA. Is this true? For some reason I can’t find it on the BU website :/

@wuu, I think after a year you can but I’m not too sure. You should definitely call or go and ask. It’s a quick, simple question so a phone call shouldnt be too much of a hassle  gluck with finding your answer!

i’ve heard horror stories about the public bathrooms at colleges… how are the bathrooms in warren? (i’m a girl btw)

also, I won a 26inch TV at a graduation party, do u think it’ll be too big for my dorm room (i have a double in warren). if I do bring it, where would I put it? would the microfridge shelving unit be necessary?

finally, my parents are going to move overseas in october (we currently live only 90minutes from boston). is it possible to stay in the dorms during thanksgiving break and winter break…?? and when its time to move out at the end of the year, is there like a storage truck that can come to move your stuff to storage??? and is the international airport far from BU?

could two mini fridges fit in a standard warren double where a microfridge would usually be?

@leader93: Warren’s bathrooms are actually pretty clean considering you will be sharing them with approximately 20 other girls. Cleaning people clean the entire bathroom every day (minus weekends). It’s also up to your floormates to help keep the bathrooms clean, but it’s never really that bad. Weekends can sometimes get bad - for example, sometimes people barf in the bathrooms and it is just left there since the cleaning people don’t clean on weekends. It’s rare though. The girls bathrooms have 3 toilet stalls, 3 shower stalls, lockers (which only a few people actually use) and sinks.

Microfridge shelving unit is unnecessary. Microfridge itself isnt even that necessary, but it is more convenient I guess.

You can put the TV on top of the microfridge.

At the end of the year there are companies that will advertise, so you don’t even need to look for a company. There are many options. You can buy a storage unit for the summer and they can help you move things into it, etc. You don’t really need to worry about this stuff until the end of the year.

@jxf8211: yes but its unnecessary, talk to your roomie and just get one fridge…

@leader93 I have to disagree with some of what xhomefry said about the community bathroom situation. Although the cleaning ladies are supposed to clean the bathrooms top down on a daily basis, they usually just pick up the trash on the floor and remove any visible stains. The weekends are the worst because if someone pukes on a Friday night, it’ll still be there on Monday morning. Nevertheless, if you see someone making a huge mess, call them out on it or it will just continue for the entire year.

@jxf Two fridges is really unnecessary for a double. The fridge is really necessary, while the microwave is just a convenience. If you bring two fridges, it will take up a lot of space you do not have.

@Versii/@leader93: I guess it mostly depends on the cleaning people that you had. The cleaning people that were assigned my floor were completely awesome. Really friendly and they worked hard. Weekday mornings, if I had a 9am class, I would come into the bathroom and the floors would be all shiny from being mopped and I would see the cleaning lady scrubbing the showers or wiping the mirrors down. So again, I guess it depends on who cleans your floor! It’s all luck :stuck_out_tongue: (but also you and your floormates are responsible for doing your part to keep your bathrooms clean)

I was wondering what are the majors that not a lot of people take.

Also if someone has puked on your floor on the weekend and it hasn’t been cleaned up, call the RA on call. I’m sure they can put in a request to get it cleaned up.

Congratulations to all the ED BU c/o 2016 students. Anyone have questions?

Hi! I just got accepted ED to COM yesterday and I’m very excited! Although it’s early, my mom and I are already debating over whether to try to live in Warren or West Campus. My mom feels Warren would be better for me because it is very close to COM and I’m a bad morning person always in a rush. Also it will be nice to be close in the winter. But from what I’ve read, people on West Campus are more relaxed and more social. Also west is right by Nickerson field, which is nice to have grass nearby in the middle of the city.
Which one would you guys suggest for me? Which one is known for having more fun? Which building has bigger/nicer rooms? And which one is just better all around (location, facilities, etc)
So excited for next year!!!

@hlg2525: This is LITERALLY always asked. I lived in Warren my first year and liked it because I could roll out of bed and get to class without being late. Also, during bad weather it wasn’t too bad since most of my classes were less than a 2 block away. Warren is near COM and CAS, so as a COM student that’s pretty convenient. Also, the Warren dining hall has a dining hall in it which means you don’t even have to leave the building to eat.

While Warren is central to all things academic, West is close to all things fun and social like the frat houses near Linden/Gardner Street and Agganis Arena (sports/music events). Also, West is closer to the gym (although you can run to the Fitrec as part of your work out or jog on Warren’s stairs which some people do).

I think West does have that stigma that there are a lot more fun/chill people. Most people say it’s because West mostly has CGS kids or people who obviously preferred the convenience to party locations to academic locations. But the people at Warren are chill and fun, just maybe not as chill or fun? But you meet people all over so it doesn’t even matter where you’re living…

Personally, I would suggest Warren because the BU Bus runs really late on weekend nights so you won’t even really need to walk back to your dorm anyway. Also bu.transloc.com does a great job of tracking where the bus is via GPS. The walk from West to Warren (and vice versa) is only 15 minutes.

So I 'll leave you with all those facts and I guess you can make a decision yourself.

Also, a final thing: They are building something new on Kenmore which is closer to Warren and pretty far from West [BU Student Center Facilities Management & Planning Boston University](BU Student Center | Campus Planning & Operations)

Thank you for your advice!

Just in general, which dorm is known for having bigger rooms? Also which one is cleaner or just overall nicer/newer? When I went on my tour, the guide showed us a room that had lofted beds with the desk and dresser underneath. The room we saw wasn’t in West or Warren though. How many rooms are actually have lofted beds? If you’re given a lofted bed is there a way to lower it to make it a normal level bed?
lol sorry for so many questions! Thank you for your help!
