Ask a CPP student

Hello everyone,

By now I think that everyone who has applied to CPP knows whether or not they’ve been accepted. I’m entering my second year in Aerospace Engineering at CPP and I remember that at this time last year I had a lot of unanswered questions. So to all the incoming Freshman welcome and congratulations for getting into Cal Poly Pomona. If you have any questions you need answered I will do my best to answer your question or refer you to someone who can or a website with the information you need.

Ask away!

Wow thanks for creating this thread. I might spam you with questions o.O

Kind of a weird question. How are the restrooms like in the halls? I heard students have their own key to them. Do students get their own locker for their stuff? Are they clean? Please elaborate more on that.

What is the best residential hall for students who usually focus in school? No party or few.

I went to the school like last week and it’s pretty isolated. Is the nearest store for toiletries walking distance? lol I might have to buy pillows and blanket because I can’t bring them with me and I won’t be bringing my car o.O

What job do you recommend for work study?

Thanks Frenchie17 :)

The restrooms aren’t bad at all. Each floor has two bathrooms; one for the girls’ side and one for the boys’ side. Ours had four stalls, four urinals (I’d imagine the girls don’t have any =P), four showers, four sinks, and enough lockers for everyone in the hallway. Lockers aren’t assigned, it’s first come first serve. Just bring a lock with you to school if you want one. Our bathroom was never locked but I don’t know if that’s always the case. If it does get locked I believe your room key can open it. The bathrooms are cleaned Monday - Friday so they are kept pretty clean.

There are four residence halls. Montecito is the best if you want to study. I recommend trying to get on the third floor (PolyScholars floor). That’s where I lived last year and it was awesome. A lot of really great people who all really cared about school. If you needed help on anything you could literally just yell it down the hall. After Montecito I believe Encinitas is the second best for academic focus. Then there’s Alamitos (party dorm) and Alliso (super party dorm). Pick the one that’s best for you.

As for the school’s isolation I won’t lie. There’s nothing within walking distance. You’re either going to need to bring a car or make some friends who have cars. There’s a lot of stuff you can do within a five to fifteen minute drive. There’s even two in-n-outs within five minutes!!! That being said, there is a small convenience store located at the entrance of the commons (cafeteria) that sells food and some useful things such as batteries. Although everything is marked up 50% so you’ll be using your meal points to pay for those things.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by work study. No one I know did one. Do you mean getting a job that can give you class credit? Let me know and I’ll try to be more helpful

Thanks for starting this thread Frenchie. I don’t have any questions for you as I think I know the university just as well. Great job on all your postings recently. You seem very well informed, to the point and helpful. Keep it up and I am looking forward to reading your postings.

Hi, I’m new to CC and I will be attending Cal Poly Pomona in the Fall 2011 as a transfer student. Seeing as I have orientation on the 14th of this month, I was just wondering what kind of things can/should I expect to do there? Will I register for classes that day? Thanks for any heads up!

Orientation will allow you to become a little more acquainted with the campus. You’ll be able to meet other incoming students and get tours of the campus. You’ll get a small insight to the dorms (you stay overnight) which is nice if you’re living on campus. You will register for your classes for fall. I recommend that you go online right now and pick out a bunch of specific classes you can take as you want to claim your spots as fast as possible

Thanks for that info. I thought I would meet with an adviser and they would put me on some sort of " path" so I would know what to take. Guess I’ll try to make a tentative schedule before I show up Thursday. Btw I am a Computer Engineer major. Do you have any insight on their CpE program? THanks!

When I was at my orientation my adviser was on holiday so I did not get to meet with him =( Instead we had another professor from the department give us a small presentation on our major but there were only three of us so he didn’t seem to care too much. All of the engineering curriculum can be viewed here: [College of Engineering: Engineering Curriculum Sheets](http://www.csupomona.edu/~engineering/current/currsheets/index.htm). Your curriculum can be viewed here: http://www.csupomona.edu/~engineering/current/currsheets/cpe-11-12.pdf. If you want help from your adviser you will be much better off already having an insight on what it is you need. Plus I’m sure they will be much more helpful if you can ask them specific questions rather than just ask them how to do everything.

True true, thanks alot. One last question, do you know if you can receive the state university grant and cal grant simultaneously? I am getting pell and state grant but just got told that I was renewed for cal grant B. How would that work?

For finances you need to contact Student Accounting and Cashiering Services (SACS). Their main website is [Cal Poly Pomona](http://www.csupomona.edu/~fas/sacs/) Phone: 909-869-2975 I have no idea how any of the grants or financial aid work as I don’t receive any =(

Yep you do Tychus, just the 1,500 part of Cal Grant B though

Hi Frenchie 17,
I was wondering if you had any colleagues who were in the business program and would you mind sharing some of the comments they have about it even though you are an aerospace engineering major

Sorry Jace I don’t know any business majors. All of my friends are in the college of engineering and the college of agriculture. The only things I can tell you about our business program is that we are opening our brand new Business Administration building this year. Also I know we have a very good Hotel Restaurant Management program but I’m not sure if that major is part of the college of business. I’m sure you already know it but the college of business administration website can be found here: [College of Business Administration on Cal Poly Pomona](http://cba.csupomona.edu/cba/)

Im a first year engineering major and want to know how many units you recommend i take the first quarter. I’ll be living on campus and also wont have a job. So far i registered for 12 units with these classes: egr 100/L, eng 104, mat 114. Is this enough or not enough? I’m also wondering if you think its a better idea to graduate in 4 years taking more units and getting a lower gpa versus graduating in 5 years with a higher gpa while having an easier time with it. I don’t know if i should apply for the 4 year guarantee program since people at orientation said most engineer students take 5 years.

Blake register for the 4-year pledge. NOW. Registration at CPP is given on a priority basis of how many units you’ve taken meaning that your freshman year you will be in the last batch of people signing up for classes. 4-year pledge gives you the chance to be with the very FIRST group of people to sign up for classes. Which means that you can get not only the classes you want but with the best teachers as well. Btw I haven’t stated it before but there are two websites you need to consult when choosing teachers: www.broncoreview.com and [url=http://www.gradecalpoly.com]Grade Cal Poly: ■■■■■■■/url. These are websites like ratemyprofessor that are specific to Pomona and will let you know which teachers to avoid. Also note that there is no penalty for dropping out of 4-year pledge so if you do it the first two years and then classes get too hard you can just stop taking the required 45 units per year. However by that time you will have a much better regular registration date.

As far as units go it is true that most engineers graduate in five years and not four. However, I recommend staying as close to the suggested curriculum as possible for as long as possible. The classes you will take your first two years are nothing compared to what they throw at you your third and fourth year. If you can’t handle up to 18 units a quarter your first year and keep above a 3.5, chances are it will take you a lot longer than five years to graduate, if you manage to graduate at all. The engineering programs all have over 50% drop out rates (into other majors) so don’t expect an easy ride.

Your course load is pretty easy right now. None of those classes should give you a hard time unless you have a bad teacher in one of them. I would definitely recommend adding another class onto your load. Look for a GE class since your first quarter there’s not very much you can take. I recommend saving the easier GE classes (like intro to a language or music) for your junior year. Try to get memorization heavy GE’s like chemistry out of the way early.

I know all of the orientation people say to take 12 units your first quarter and take it easy while you settle into college but I disagree with them. 12 First year units is like going back to Freshman year of high school. You’re in college now. It’s time to buckle down and let the real work begin!

P.S. those asterisks say k o o f e r s which is the name of the new website. Don’t know why they censored it =P

I’m trying to add BIO 110, which is 3 units but this message comes up:

Error: Unit Limit Exceeded For Appointment Period. The class add transaction was not processed. Adding the class would exceed the unit limit allowed for the appointment period.

Edit: It looks like 14 units is the max that it says I can take, but all the other GE classes seem to be 4 units.

So in order to allow more students to be able to take the classes they need, during your regular registration period you are allowed to sign up for a smaller number of units. During the open registration period, which I believe starts on the first day of school, your unit cap will increase to 18-20. That is when you need to sign up for your last course. Bio 110 is a good one to take early because it’s a lot of memorization.

Work study is for financial aid. The money I make from work study goes to my tuition. I believe students are allowed to pick what job they want on campus.

Does the 4 year pledge apply to everyone? Architecture major is 5 years though.

Any advices for students majoring in architecture?

Thanks

I’m sorry but I don’t really know how financial aid works. However, there are tons of jobs for students on campus. It’s up to you to find one though. Working in the Bronco Commons is probably the easiest job.

Yes 4-year pledge applies to everyone. I believe Architecture has a 5-year pledge program.

Majoring in Architecture? Accept that you won’t have a life for 5 years. They’ve done even more work than I have so far. Only go into the program if you’re really passionate about it, although I guess the same could be said of all majors. I know a couple architecture majors and I haven’t really heard any of them complain about it besides the workload. There’s a lot of projects although some of them seemed pretty interesting. All I can say is that it’s not for the light-hearted.
