Compared to further north...DC is "practically tropical." Thus far this year, I have only seen it snow twice, and it didn't stick either time. In August, it is very hot and humid. But spring is so gorgeous with the cherry blossoms and everything.

Study Abroad- most go first semester junior year...Others go for more than one semester (second sophomore year and first junior year, etc., but that all depends on your major and how many cradits you have completed before you leave)

Weather- Winter in DC is a bit milder than the NE, but it will be quite cold from Jan to Valentines Day. Usually there will be snow on the ground from the beginning of second semester until the beginning of February.

That's just not true about there usually is snow on the ground. I haven't had to pick up the snow shovel yet this Winter. DC is more prone to get the wintery mix of freezing rain/ice than a lot of measurable snow.

Ask a former AU student...

hey idk if u guys r gonna no this... but i wuzz jw it says on all the stat sites (like collegeboard, princton review, etc) that AU is only 37.5% male. Does this mean that the admissions office will try 2 get more Males selected this year to try and balance it out? Thanks.

I'm a senior at AU this year....my comment about the snow on the ground was, as stated above, generally from mid January to the beginning of February, which has been my experience the past three years. But you are correct, DC is more prone to freezing rain than snow for much of the winter.

Looks like the mix is on its way. Good luck and have a great year Britty512!

I am a high school junior and really want to go to AU. I am planning my senior schedule and would love to drop AP French. I have a B+ average and have taken French since grade 7. My other classes will be AP Calc, AP Lit, AP American Govt, AP Sociology , Physics, Journalism and Law. Can I comfortably drop AP French and still feel good about my chances of getting into AU, assuming my SATs are in the mid 600's per section. My weighted GPA is 93.

Are regular application decisions ever released early? Are they ever online? Thanks

I got mine early. I don't remember when, exactly, but it was before my spring break (the 3rd week in March). I don't think they were released online, but only the admissions office could tell you what is happening for this year.

Cool. Thanks!

Were the General Ed. classes interesting and worth while? Did they open up "new areas of interest" as these req. are generally in place for?

Are those in greek like considered the elite on the social scale?

Would you consider the campus attractive? Also, is it a little small (83 acres, correct?) considering the amount of students attending?

(This may be a common question) How is AU's rep in the city? I know college is generally what you make of it, but videos like this discourage me:
http://revver.com/video/939753/my-summary-of-au/
When he says "if you were rejected from Georgetown".
http://revver.com/video/804873/georgetown-vs-gw-au/
When he says "I guess AU has that.. but it's AU". I know I shouldn't care about superficial outer views of AU, but I think I may just a little. Is AU considered the "other college" in D.C.?

What are the internships like? Do they seem like gruntwork or are they rewarding? I know they may vary a lot, but I would really hope for an internship that I loved. Also, do they often lead to jobs with the company you intern for after graduation?

Thanks a lot, I may post again with more questions I can think of. Sorry if all the questions seemed negative, I was just asking about all my negative concerns. So far AU seems like a great fit for me.

greg...the first video, my impression was the guy was just being a jerk. Not even sure if he was an AU student. Wouldn't want to hang out w/him if he was...can't stand negative people.
second video..if he was a guy from Georgetown: scary. That would be a turnoff for me for Georgetown.

I can't relate to either of those guys.
Thanks for posting those though..didnt know that site exists.

Some gen eds are good, some are not. It depends a lot of the professor. A lot of students don't have to take some of the classes due to grades on certain AP tests.

Students do their own thing. If you want to party, going greek is helpful (if you join the social sororities/ fraternities). If you want to go clubbing, than obviously being greek doesn't matter.

The quad it pretty for a city school. Some of the insides of buildings are not pretty. The campus is big enough to make getting from one side of the other in the ten minutes between classes a challenge. The library is too small though (even though there will be an annex in the new SIS building.)

AU is not Georgetown. We're nicer. Their academics are perhaps better. GW tends to overshadow AU, but AU is strong in its own right. The School of Public Affairs, the School of International Service, and Kogad school of business are "ranked" higher than AU as a whole. There are kids who turned down Georgetown to come here. Some may find it advantages to be a big fish in a small pond.

Your internship question depends on the internship itself.

AU is a polarizing school. People love it or hate it. So visit the DC area schools, apply, see where you get in, and make your decision based on that.

Thanks for the responces. :)
Yeah I plan on visiting them in the spring.

I dont think I saw this answered does AU give any athletic scholarships? I wish I could go here sooo much.

Yes, AU gives athletic scholarships. Visit the athletics department web site at http://aueagles.cstv.com.

My son is thinking of rooming in Letts Hall. Any advice? He likes the location because it is near the library. Also, do most hungry boys do better on the 150 or 200 meal plan. I'm thinking of the larger food plan so he doesn't starve while he is learning to budget for longer than a week or two at a time.

Letts has quite the convenient location being near the shuttle stop and the library. Anderson (which is connected to Letts) has slightly bigger rooms. It's nice that there are study lounges on each floor (as does Anderson). (North Side does not have study lounges on each floor). There are also some really cool lounges there on the 6th floor. Some floors are definitely crazier than others; it's the luck of the draw. However, since Letts is attached to Anderson and Centennial, south side is much more likely to get 3 am fire alarms on Friday nights.

I would say go for the 200 meal plan. He probably won't use it all, but it's not that much more expensive than the 150 block plan. Don't do the super plan though, because he won't get the $300 in eaglebucks that the other plans automatically get. (Eaglebucks = campus cash connected to the AU ID). Also, with the super plan he can never share his meal swipes.

How influential are frats to the social life at AU? Are there off-campus houses? I realize drinking is an issue anywhere, but at AU is drinking an important component of fraternity life?
Do you know anything about hazing? Thanks for your help!

Does anyone have any information on their theatre department? It is mentioned in the musical theatre forum but has very little recent information.
