What is American University like?

Hey guys,

I’m currently studying at UNSW Australia (double majoring in accounting and finance) and am thinking of going on an exchange to American University in July - December 2020, so I’ll be around 21 years old. Now I have a few questions:

  • What is campus life like?
  • How far away is New York City from campus?
  • What is the closest city to American University?
  • How are uni parties or is it not really a party place?
  • Is college football big at uni? and if so, how much are tickets?
  • How are dorms? Are there a lot of people who live on campus?
  • Are there a lot of locals (American people) who live on campus? (I'm asking because over here at UNSW most people who stay on campus are all international students and it's not compulsory to stay on campus. I know some American unis make it compulsory for uni students to live on campus).

Thanks!

The school is in Washington DC, US Capitol, and a great city to explore.
Yes it is near enough you can do a weekend trip to NYC, maybe a 5 hr bus/train trip.
Students will live on or near campus, this is not a commuter school.
There are students from everywhere, not locals, but yes lots of Americans and others.

  • Campus life isn't as exciting as some huge state schools, but the campus is beautiful. Parties and stuff happen off campus and any fun things you do most likely will be off campus. I consider the school similar to home, in that it provides the basic necessities, but any entertainment will most likely require you to leave campus. Thankfully, you get unlimited metro rides as a full time student.
  • I always take the train home, and you can be at Penn Station in less than 4 hours.
  • Parties are off campus and very exclusive. It's really just frats, and they're very selective about who gets on the list.
  • We don't have a football team. All other sports games are free for students, just show your ID when you walk into the arena/field!
  • A lot of freshmen and sophomores live on campus. I will confidently say that my college dorm was much better than all of my friends. The floors are carpeted, and the built in storage is amazing and so helpful. As long as you place your furniture well, you'll get a decent amount of floorspace. There's also a new sophomore only campus that has wood floors, drywall, and a bathroom for each room (so you don't have to share it with other people, only you and your roommate). Most people move off campus to nearby apartments their junior/senior year or they become an RA.
  • Most students are from America, but there's a decent amount of international students. I see them all the time on campus and there are always a few in half of my classes.

It sounds as if you haven’t taken a look at the university’s website yet, if you are’t aware that it’s located in Washington DC! That website would be a good place to start: I don’t think I can post a link here, but it is very easy to find the website by googling “American University.”
