You can choose unless you opt for the bookstore to put all of your books together for you. If you go with a latter, they just pick a random one off of the shelf.

Ermm sorry to act a bit clueless, but what bookstore are you’ll talking about? :!

Sorry, to clarify I was talking about the campus bookstore.

Is that student advantage card worth it?

For the student advantage card–it really how much it will be used.

I’m from Jersey, so I take Amtrak whenever I am going home or to school, and I will use it if I am visiting friends at different schools. I saved more money than the 4-year card cost within a few months after I bought it. It just really depends how often it is going to be used.

Yeah I’m in upstate NY so the train will be a good way to get to school. The discount is on top of the normal Amtrak student discount?

D is at orientation right now, and meanwhile an AU mailing arrived at home with brochures form various third-party vendors for dorm-related stuff. D is in a Hughes triple. I’m sure she and her roomies would love to have a micro-fridge, but I’m wondering if that would make sense given how little space they’ll have. Dumb idea? Are there refrigerators and/or microwaves available in any common areas in the building?

My d. bought a mini-fridge, which fit fine (much cheaper). There are microwaves and frigs in common rooms, usually on every floor.

Mini,
Do roommates share or does each one bring their own? Thanks

What we did is have the students make an agreement about what each was bringing, so if they separated at the end of the year, they could decide who owned what. One is plenty.

MY son found out he was tripled. Will there be room for a frig/micro combo, or should we just wait to see if de-tripling takes place? Thanks

There was room for a frig in my d’s triple. Microwaves are not allowed in the rooms (electrical surge concern.) There are stoves and microwaves in common areas.

Thanks mini

Combination refrigerator/microwaves are offered In the packet that came from AU last week enclosing fliers for various approved third-party merchandise. If microwaves are otherwise prohibited, I’ll be an optimist and assume that it’s not about a financial arrangement with this vendor, but about AU having vetted the size/wattage of their product for safety purposes.

I know, I received that also. I was just wondering if it would fit in a tripled room. We might just wait on this until there is an indication of what the de-tripling scenario is. If there’s a frig and micro in the common area, I guess S will survive. He is on a meal plan after all.
I’m not going to hover!

hello5,
FYI re: the tripling, in my s experience, by the end of the first semester there were no more “forced triples”. Some people did choose to stay as triples, to save money and/or because they had adapted and become friends and didn’t want anyone to leave. Don’t know about the combo fitting though, you have a good strategy with wait & see.

I’ve been researching transfer schools, as I am currently unhappy at art school. I’m looking for a more academically challenging school with plenty of practical job/internship opportunities and AU seems to fit what I’d like in a school. I absolutely love AU’s Transfer2AU site! It seems like it helps transfer students form a community of their own… How well do transfers integrate into the community at AU?

Also, I’m a stickler for cleanliness and privacy (which are two things not commonly found in most dorms) but how are the bathrooms? Are the shower stalls curtained? Does the cleaning staff do a good job?

I hope this isn’t too trivial, but D takes daily medication and will have to be filling prescriptions locally. I see there’s Rite Aid pharmacy at 3301 New Mexico Avenue NW. This appears to be very close to the campus, but it’s hard to tell what’s what from a map. Is this a sensible pharmacy to use, or can you recommend another that’s convenient to the campus?

I used to get prescriptions filled at that pharmacy; it is very close to campus.

MommaJ,
when we were on campus for orientation last month we walked over to Tenleytown (less than 10 minutes from the quad) and at least one drugstore there (CVS or RiteAid, I’m not sure which) was open 24 hours/day with the pharmacy open til 10pm
