ASK a current Greek USC Student Anything!

If USC gave me financial aid to cover dorm housing, will that remain the same for sorority housing? Or does that mean I’ll see a noticeable decrease in that sense next year?

How safe do you feel on campus as well as off campus?

I’m touring USC Monday! Is there anything specific I should do/see while I’m there?

The campus isn’t unsafe at all if you are with a group of people. It’s the people that walk alone at night that get into trouble (for the most part).

Although there was that car hit-and-run death last year at Hoover… but stuff like that is pretty rare

12layla12- I am not on financial aid but my roommate who is says his FA didn’t change when he moved into the house but your situation may vary.

laura- I feel totally safe on and off campus during the day. However at night I wouldn’t go too many places off campus (outside the row or some parts of 29th street right next to Hoover) by myself.

What about things to do/see while I’m there touring?

Anything specific?

Welcome to SC! We hope you have a great time touring the campus even though classes will not be in session. Do arrange in advance to take the campus tour.

Wow, thanks Georgia Girl!

can someone give me a description of the type of girls you would see in each USC sorority.

thanks.

Love,

On the Panhellenic website there are links to each chapter’s own website. On these are pages of photos, including information about officers, national philanthropy, socials, sisterhood activities and a photo of the outside of the sorority house. Some have photos of rooms and common areas.

Each house has elaborate safety features and a live in housemother. All houses have members of various religious faiths and from different parts of the country. Some girls from abroad do pledge.

The sorority houses are gorgeous. Some of the chapters at SC have been on the row around 90 years.

Check with Panhellenic about costs. Have a frank talk with parents or guardians about the expenses involved BEFORE going through recruitment.

Have an open mind. It is a mutual selection. Find the chapter that fits YOU and wants YOU to be a sister.

can i still join a social frat if i dont drink/do drugs?

i still love partying though haha. so much that i built my own bp table.
but i figure if i can respect people’s choices in life, is it so much to ask of them to respect mine?

plus id probably be dd every party. lol. which is always a good thing, but 50/50 for me haha.

oh and…REALLY ODD question, do frats ever have pets?

As I understand it, yes, some of the frats have dogs. Greeks are people too. You will find a wide variety of kids in each house. Some drink, some don’t. Find your comfort level.

Thanks Georgia Girl, I was unaware that there would be money involved (other than for recruitment and housing).

is there an updated break down of the current frats?

and do you have to live near campus to enjoy frat life? ill probably be commuting from old town pasadena…which is like 20 minutes.

can somebody tell me about the frat SAE?

in three words:

conservative, wealthy, and white

but obviously there are tons of exceptions - that is just the very stereotypical description

I want to rush for Alpha Delta Chi. Yes, I am Catholic. So how is it? :)

Is it possible to still get a bid from a frat despite not being invited to the blue chip dinnner

@ajax120 - From an IFC fraternity? Incredibly unlikely unless you have an inside connection to the fraternity. Trojan Knights and some of the other professional fraternities have rush events coming up though.

Typically, what would room and board cost per semester? My daughter and I just went on the USC tour Monday, and she really liked the University. However, she is still very skeptical of the off campus housing she would be forced to occupy in her Junior and Senior years.

Dear dad,
The university is building new housing, but the demand is high. There are decent apartments quite near the campus. Students here can advise you.

Last year one of the sororities rented out rooms for women. Renters did not participate in sorority activities, but had the advantage of a great chef, live in housemother and top notch security system.

All students who go through recruitment do not pledge. If the woman is invited for membership there is a range of costs. Living in as an upperclassman costs less than a dorm. The most expensive chapters cost $10,000 for an academic year. Some are less, around $8,000. This includes R & B, social fees, local dues, national dues and some miscellaneous expenses. Freshmen who live out find it to be expensive, as costs are in addition to R & B in the dorms. There is a range to live out during freshmen year.

You can send an email to Ms. Beth Saul at USC Panhellenic and request the list of costs for each chapter.
