Ask a current MSU student anything!!!

The aid for international students is not great especially considering that Michigan has been hit hard economically.

What are your stats? You could be eligible for some merit aid, but really you would probably need to contact the school. The COA for international students is right around $40k.

ETA: According to <a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board; 154 international students received aid. There are nearly 3,000 international undergraduates. The average aid package was under $10k for those who actually received aid.

MSU does provide merit aid to international students, but I’ve heard it’s to less than 10% of students (matching up with romani’s stats). You generally need a 3.9+ GPA equivalent (at least that’s what I’ve heard) to qualify, there are no guaranteed cutoffs and even if you do get one it isn’t a full ride.

How much math do I have to take if I go into James Madison? I suck at math and I hate it so much and I want to get out of it as easily as I can. What’s the easiest way that I can fulfill the math requirement?

^ You either need to come in with calc credit, get a 19 on the math placement test (a proctored test), or complete one of the university math requirements: MTH 110 or MTH 116 OR MTH 103 AND MTH 112, MTH 114, STT 200 or STT 201 (so either one hardish math class or two easier classes). You can find out what each of those classes consist of by going to schedule.msu.edu and looking them up.

^How hard is it to get a 19 on the math placement test?

^ Haven’t the slightest clue. You can take an unproctored math test through MSU when you’re accepted: [MPS Exam Coversheet](<a href=“Mathematics Placement Service”>Mathematics Placement Service)

Hi fa-la-la-lena! I’m hoping to transfer to MSU for Fall semester of 2012, could you chance me?

I’ve already applied for Fall semester of 2012, but a little anxious to get the acceptance/rejection.

Here is what my academic profile/extracurricular activities looks like from my community college:

3.5 GPA
46 credits
Vice President of the Native American Club
Treasurer of Culture Club
Member of Phi Theta Kappa (Academic honor society for CC students.)
History Tutor
Hospital Volunteer
Internship with the Public Coordinator from my CC.
Working 20-30 per week.
Currently enrolled in the Big Sister Program.
Art Gallery Volunteer.

My main concern is that I have not yet completed the math. I was a dual enrollment student in high school and failed that math class because I didn’t take it seriously. From that point I worked my way from a 2.4 to a 3.5. Is it possible that MSU will overlook those course grades? I’m taking the math this upcoming year. Will it affect my chances of acceptance if I went to GVSU next semester? My CC does not have 2 courses that I need for my degree. By the end of this semester I will have a 3.6.

Also, to supplement my profile I have three letters of recommendation, I wrote a stellar essay, and I am a first generation college student.

Any suggestions? Anyone have an idea of what my chances are for acceptance?
