Ask a current UCR freshman anything!

what exactly is learning community?
i’m confused on this whole idea
is it beneficial? what are its pros and cons?

LC -

You get to hang out with certain people with the same classes for the year, so that you and they can help each other out with studies

So, it can help in that way, but in others respects, people may find it too much extra work (there’s seminars for it), and somewhat restrictive in regard to one’s schedule, plans, etc.

whiteclock you have 19 units too. Nice me too. I was going to take 3 classes but if I take 4 right now Ill be in sophomore standing after fall quarter

lol. I have 17 units with 4 classes. D:

I didn’t think that the learning community was really necessary for me. My friend was asking me whether she should join or not. I asked her what her reason for joining was. If it was because she wanted classes that were hard to get, then I don’t think it’s worth it. If she wanted extra help and all that stuff, then she should go for it.

The main edge that the LC people had over regular students for pre-bus major was being able to take BUS10. I decided that… BUS10 is BUS10 no matter when you take it. Why does it matter when you take it? As long as you fulfill the requirement, you are fine. Besides, although you will be guaranteed the class, you don’t get to choose when you take it. I think building your schedule around the set schedule could be somewhat of a hassle too. But… that’s just my opinion on LC.

the extra unit comes from the science lab, apparently…

yeah by the way it looks Labs and some discussion give you on unit.

I didn’t get involved in a learning community and I’m happy I didn’t. They don’t get to choose their class times and usually have 8 am classes etc.

I just don’t really see the point of it. I ended the year with a 3.94, learning community free! I think the only reason they note that people in learning communities have higher gpa’s than those in non-learning communities, is because the people that join the learning communities are probably more motivated to begin with. I’d say, don’t join unless you really want that crutch and are fine with morning classes.

And if you’re not a morning person, AVOID 8 AM CLASSES. Seriously. I took one 8 AM class last year, and got super motivated to start going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. It worked at first, but half way through I started ditching every day. And I was motivated. Seriously, just don’t put yourself through 8 AM classes (unless you’re a morning person).

Other questions?

Is there microsoft student discount at UCR? If so how do i get it?
Im planning to buy a laptop and if i dont get an OS i save about 150$. And i heard if you get OS from school, its like free or dirt cheap.

how many credits do you need to be cosidered an incoming sophomore?
And can you be considered a sophomore halfway through the year?
Like let’s say, i have __ credits but i’m a freshman when i have that many but after his quarter i have ___ so now i have enough credits to be sophomore.

think it’s around 48 credits

Or you can just get a boot legged on online :D

bootlegs are hard to study from, or print :(

especially since they’re almost always pdf files

Whenever you have at least 45 units completed, you are considered a sophomore. 90 units is considered a junior, and you should be allowed to enroll in upper-division classes.

I will be entering my second year at UCR this fall, but after this upcoming fall quarter, I will have already completed ~90 units.

darn laptops. Im thinking of buying a netbook with an option to upgrade to windows 7 cheaper since they are around 250 to 450 at staples. I dont really use a comp for games just internet and writing papers and playing bootlegged gameboy games I have on my flash drive, so it a good option for me :)

lol i got my laptop for 500 and a free printer that cost me 70… so i got my laptop for 430 (:

i was talking about bootleg windows os’s  works fine on all my computers >_>

Why would you need a bootleg OS?

Unless you want a different version…

yeah thats what i’m saying. If you want say a netbook specifically for windows 7 why not just buy a cheaper on without it and download windows 7 online and do it yourself.

Dunno. At this point any of the recent Windows operating systems work well.

The reason Windows 7 is out is not because Vista is bad, but because people think it’s bad…
