Ask a current UCR freshman anything!

Ness’s class requires textbooks – two ethnographies, I believe. The other readings are .pdf files she will post online. Even if you buy it at the campus bookstore, it shouldn’t set you back more than $26 (than say a $100 chem book). There is always the option of checking them out at the reserve in the library, but that class is usually large so you’ll be competing.

She can and will test you on specific details in the book. On her final, she asked a question along the lines of “In insert particular reading, how much was the estimated amount of money that companies would save by employing workers in third-world countries?” Of course I didn’t remember that. I remember one of her questions was about something she said on the very first day of class, and the only reason why I remembered it was because I thought it was interesting.

I’m not sure if she changes up her textbook list, but for her Fall 2008 class I had to buy Portraits of “The Whiteman” by Keith Basso and Visayan Vignettes: Ethnographic Traces of a Philippine Island by Jean-Paul Dumont.

What about the phone service they provide? do they charge extra if faxing or making a call to a place like SF?

Ah, I don’t think i have reliable friends then xD.

Shesasensation, how were those readings?

Calikillafornia:

In my experience (I don’t know if/how she changes her class up), reading was not bad at all. I only had four .pdf readings for the entire quarter, the longest being about 20 pages. As far as the other two books go, they are each pretty thin (~200 or less pages) and she spreads out the reading over a few weeks. In my HIST020 class I had an average of 10-12 readings per week, some of which were definitely not short.

shesasensation- did you print out the .pdf files instead of reading it on the computer screen?

I did if it was something particularly difficult to get through so I could take notes in the margins. It gets expensive to print out EVERY reading from all your classes though.

If it was something short, then I’d read it on the computer. A 20-page reading doesn’t sound THAT bad to read on a computer. But when you have several of them for all your classes and you’re staring at a computer screen ONLY focused on reading carefully, you can get terrible eyestrain. At least that’s how I am.

Don’t worry about this too much. Most classes will have core textbooks supplemented with additional individual readings like journal articles or one chapter from a different book you’re not required to buy.

Oh, and bring your reading to classes, whether it be on paper or computer. When professors discuss the readings you can take notes right there.

What about TV in dorms!? isnt their cable? and do they provide the cable cord?!

Yes! There should be! Although you may have to share among people in a hall! If not, you can always get a tv tuner!

How are college labs? what are they like? any tips for succeeding in them?

I seen the chem lab from the outside they looked very nice since the chem building is pretty new. The Bio building is older , likely one of the original building but they had some really cool things in there

haha the chem lab that looks nice is where ochem and higher up takes place
the general chem place looks like crap and old

haha all my grades for lab are good, haha even better than the lecture
chem 1a lec B, lab a
chem 1b lec c, lab a-
chem 1c lec d, lab A+ lmao
haha well i dunno how this happened. most people were the opposite.
oh and bio 5a lec C+, and bio lab b(there was one A, two b, mosty c’s, and then d’s and F’s)
haha bio lab was so hard for everyone, at least a quarter didnt
for me labs are pretty easy
but i dunno, some people find them hard
it also depends on the ta teaching it, and yes suck up! oh and ask for help

I’m going to have 3 classes this Fall:

CHASS Learning Community (Human Rights)
Beginning Composition (001A)
Inequality in American Society

Can I balance this out with a job for my work study?Anyone take any of those classes? How was it?

haha yeah english 1a is pretty easy and learnining community classes tend to be easy.
im pretty sure you can balance ur schedule out with work study, most chass students can compared to cnas because chass doesnt have to deal with labs as much

Thanks, I hope so.I picked 3 classes because not only was it recommended to me, but I thought it would be easier for me to get a 4.0 GPA and do work study.

hey =]

i was wondering if ne of u had suggestions as to what to bring and what not to bring for dorm life …i’m going for east lothian and i knw they hv a mini fridge and a dresser … is that usually enough storage space?

thanks

that girl: eh not really I suggest that you take a plastic cabinet like from Wal-Mart since the dorm closets are super tiny
