Ha, I was attracted by the physics program as well :)

How big are dorms? I plan on building a new computer to replace my aging core 2 duo desktop. The case I have (HAF 922) is about 19 inches high and 10 inches wide, and I’m not sure it will fit. I could always invest in a smaller case if it is too big though.

@WCF thanks - If I look for housing right before the semester starts will I be SOL ? I’m going to SBCC not UCSB but I know the fall semester at SBCC starts a bit earlier than UCSB. the two private dorms are rip offs 14k for a triple 0_0 hell no.

@andrewexd - ill probably be attending SBCC as well, and the private dorm prices are ridiculous!
but i dont know anybody so i guess i dont have another choice. its only for a year anyway

ALSO
i was wondering how integrated SBCC students are in UCSB, i mean do they go to the same events/parties/whatever?

@Natedogg honestly I don’t think it’s worth it… you can get a double in IV for $400-$500 a month and you aren’t policed by RA’s, you can eat whatever you want and you don’t have to leave during breaks… That’s like 10k more for the dorms (10 month lease) which could buy me a laptop, a car and a pound of herbs (:))

If you live in isla vista everyone pretty much lives together, I mean they won’t know which school you go to unless you tell them… Idk anyone going to ucsb/sbcc either… maybe I can convince a friend to go up there with me :)

Both of the questions you asked are more personal ones that really only you can answer. I can try with generalizations, though. I would personally hate living in FT, it’s far away and I’d have to go out and buy a bike (40 min walk is impractical) or settle for planning around bus schedules. I almost never visit my friends in FT. I know a few others who also dislike FT because of the distance. Most people, though, don’t mind. They’ll acknowledge it as an inconvenience, but get over it pretty quickly.

As for studying, that’s even more personal. Some can do it, some can’t. I personally don’t find it that difficult, but others do. I’d say most people manage to get by, though, so don’t worry too much.

1) 20% of UCSB students choose not to party. And if you don’t want to drink, most of your friends here would definitely respect your choice. There are a lot of after dark programs, concerts, and activities. And there’re flyers and blurbs about them everywhere, so it’s impossible for you to not notice them. You’ll always find friends that don’t party as well. And I don’t think it really matters if you choose to hang out with friends that do go out to parties and drink, because some of my friends don’t think at all and it isn’t really a problem in our group.

2) It’s fairly easy to change your major before fall matriculation. You can just petition to change your major now. I assume that you have already got accepted. Just go to the admitted students website and follow the instructions. But beware that selected number of majors do require additional examination of your application materials. If you don’t change your major before fall, then you’ll have to fulfill the requirements that the respective department has for declaring that major, since you’ll be a matriculated student instead of an incoming student.

Ryan1119 is right about the partying. I don’t party or drink either, but I’ve had zero problems finding friends who share similar interests. The party scene can be nonexistent if you chose to do so and it really wouldn’t matter to anyone.

any cheap housing around there :(? wouldnt mind 30-45 mins of driving, but the renting cost is almost 2x than Irvine, which is already ridiculous here D:

and btw, how much will the GPA matter in college? I mean…it’s quite important for us in high school for getting into the top choice schools. Would it hinder any of your major choices and such? I’m sorry but i’m an immigrant, only been in U.S. for 5 years, so i’m still VERY new to the college system here

I’m curious about the housing stuff. I like the housing in UCSB and I hear that you have to go through a lottery to goto them if you’re a soph or something. If you don’t get into a UCSB dorm, does that mean you have to go off campus? I’m looking at like google maps/street view and the houses in like IV look real ghetto. Are there other places to go instead of like IV?

For grad school they will look at your GPA as well as test scores and other factors. And if you’re planning on entering the workforce after college (either permanently or for a few years before grad school) some of the more sought-after employers will have a GPA screen, so you can’t even get an interview without a certain GPA.

I’ve benn admitted as transfer student and major in biz-econ but recently, I had this thought that possibly I want to double major in econ+ biological science or maybe change a major to bio

What would be best option for me? do you know anyone who does econ+bio major?

Have you visited Isla Vista yet? If not, you should. To me, IV was part of the charm of going to UCSB, and now that I’m an alum and working full time, I really miss the small dense housing there and easy access to friends.

To be honest, there’s very few people who drive… check out the Garden Court apartments, where it’s around $380 a month to share a room.

I know there are a few Co-ops in SB. I think right in front of Westgate (the student housing apartments) there is one. I don’t know the name or the details of it, but they seem like they are really nice people. Go check it out.

These two questions came up by previous posts, but have never been answered. . …
