Does anyone know if we can be admitted to the honors program at UCSB without applying? I received the chancellor’s reception letter, but did not receive the Regent’s. So I’m a bit confused right now.

im interested in what mahana808 asked too? could we get an answer?

When you get accepted you are told if you are automatically accepted into the honors programs. Regents are automatically admitted. If you are not automatically admitted, they may ask you to apply if they think you have a chance.

Hey =]
first of all, it’s awesome that you manage to get back to EVERYONE’s questions
& i’m not just saying that to suck up, i’m genuinely impessed
& my question is
Would I be wasting my time going for a Creative Writing major at UCSB? Cuz everyone who asks about majors basically goes for everything but Literature/English. I know it’s not one of the predominant majors but how would you say the courses are? Are there a lot of them? & which UC (other than the top-tier ones I didn’t even bother applying to) do you think has the strongest English program?
thanks =]

Can freshmen living in dorms bring cars?

Yes.

What is the best laptop to get for ucsb, mac or windows?

Get whatever OS you’re comfortable with; no need to learn something new unless you really want to. The school’s campus and dorms’ wireless and wired Internet should work on both Macs and PCs- I have friends with both.

The only suggestion I have for you here is to think light. After 2 quarters here, I realized that my 15 inch laptop is a bit larger than it needs to be when I’m lugging it around (but I still do it anyways for note-taking purposes). I would recommend that you get a slightly smaller laptop, I’m thinking probably 13 inch or 14 inch would be a great choice.

Get whatever you want. I’m used to Windows. Back at home, everyone I knew had a Windows. Here at UCSB, I’ve never seen so many Macs in my life; I didn’t think I’d see a CS professor using one for lectures. As such, both are well supported on campus.

Either one is good, but I’d say if you have the money and/or are technically challenged, get the Mac. I know a bunch of people who got spyware/viruses onto their PCs and Resnet blocked them. They couldn’t get the spyware/viruses off, sometimes because they couldn’t update their anti-malware programs because the lack of internet, and also because the malware was just persistent. You might not wanna deal with the hassle.

Pre-med program?

ROTC?

Sorry if you answered either of these before!

ok i know this may be a stupid question
but how much is one able to each
at each meal?

it takes a lot to fill me up
so would i be able to each whatever and however much i want?

You can eat at as much as you want in the dining commons. I know a guy who has stayed in there for hours at a time, eating and studying the entire time. But you can only enter the dining commons once every meal time (for example, you can’t go to lunch twice on the same day).

does at&t have good reception on campus?

^ does at&t have good reception anywhere ? lol…

ok a real question - is IV empty during the summer/winter ? and when is the best time to get housing in the IV ?

can someone give me a brief summary of some details about dorm/housing at ucsb?
also, can i apply for the honors program after a year? or does it have to be two?
i got in, but without honors. so no priority registration, and i think it might hurt me at first. ):

v alright ~ xD
/just feeling a tad lazy at the moment.
i’ll do it over spring break then. (:

^ do a search. (I’m not trying to be mean - there’s tons of good info)

how is the physics program over there :D? i’m excited to feel one of the best phyz program in the whole U.S. :)

blastie, it sounds like you already know how our Physics program is I’m not in it myself, but I know a couple people in the CCS program and they are very proud of it and were excited when they got in. It is supposedly one of the best in the country.

andrewexd, I dunno how empty it is during summer/winter. The best time to get housing is Winter Quarter, starting in January. I was in a hurry to get housing myself, but it turns out there really isn’t much of a rush. A lot of people wait until March when next year’s residence hall decisions are out. Still, the earlier the better.
