Is UCSD good for social sciences? (IE sociology, psych, etc)

do all individual colleges like warren have their own gym for working out and basketball or is there only one or w/e such facilities that all students must use?

UCSD is notably strong at PoliSci and Econ--not too sure about the others.

There are three main recreational facilities on campus:
-RIMAC (Weight room, raquetball, basketball arenas, etc.) very close to Roosevelt and Marshall
-Main Gym (Weight room, basketball arenas, aquatic center/pool, etc.) between Muir and Revelle
-Canyon View (Large, olympic size pools, some weights, rock climbing, etc.) in Warren and close to Sixth

do you guys think it's better to attend UCSD over USC Spring?
i'm majoring in bioeng for SD, and biology for USC...
generally i'd prefer USC, but i just can't see myself waiting around at CC classes for the fall to go to USC...

any suggestions on what seems better to do?

how cutthroat is ucsd in academics compared to the mid-tier ones like davis and irvine. i know sd is the "nerdy" uc and i also heard that sd wants to step up their game to become more competitive like ucla and cal. i just dont want to drown in books for the next four years. i really want to enjoy my time.

im a 4.0 student and im really dedicated to getting good grades but i want to have fun and let loose once in a while. will i be able to achieve a good balance of the social and academic life at sd?

my friends and i have a joke that any major at ucsd that starts with a "bio" something pwns any other university with the same majors. so there's your answer for you.

it is also a little known fact that ucsd has a really strong humanities program and i know they're international relations and political science is also top-notch.

To be completely off-topic, but how is the Greek life there? I know since there's not a huge amount of athletics and especially no football that there's obviously not going to be a giant presence there. How involved are the sororities, and which ones do you think are the "better" ones?

Hey, when and where are you able to request a roommate?

How much are the first quarter fees for a resident? Not including the housing plan of course because you choose in what increments you want to pay.

@papercuts : [UCSD Receives Top 10 Rankings in Bioengineering, Bioinformatics and Computer Systems in U.S. News Survey of Graduate Programs [Jacobs School of Engineering: News & Events]](http://www-structures.ucsd.edu/news/news_releases/release.sfe?id=533) ucsd is top in the nation for bioengineering. ucsd is cheaper than usc. starting spring at SC is basically like losing an entire year of college coursework. I think you get my bias, but look into it yourself and make the best decision.

@peanut_butter: keep in mind that nearly all of your classmates also were 4.0 high school students… and many(most) do not continue to get a 4.0 in college. Straight A-'s will give you a 3.7. Depending on your major kinda tells how competitive it will be to make your marks. Engineering and science classes at SD are quite competitive and your grade is determined relative to how the class did. (ex. a standard deviation above the average might get you an A-) other classes aren’t curved at all and the prof does not care how many C’s and how little A’s he/she gives out. YES you can have a good social life. you’ll find out for yourself that it is all about time management.

@miss blue sky: Greek life is great. But perhaps I’m biased again because I’m in a fraternity. Did my grades suffer? No. That’s a myth and actually got my highest GPA while pledging. The greek system is organized as MGC, IFC, and Panhellenic. MGC consists of the asian/latino types of frats & sororities. IFC and Panhellenic are the more traditionally known greeks. The “better” one? hahaha all have stereotypes, but not necessarily true. go [UCSD - ACB](http://collegeacb.com/sb.php?school=UCSD) for primarily…greek gossip. but don’t believe everything you hear. ha

@XavierTheSavior9: depends on your college.

i’m a human bio major, planning to go on the pre-med track & am in muir college. I have several questions about my classes for fall quarter…

this is my tentative schedule for next year:

math 10c
ltko 2a
bild 87 (freshmen seminar)
muir 40

should i stop there or also add either HILD1A or PSYCH 3? or would that be overkill?

on korean, I’m korean and I consider my korean to be like 1st-2nd grade elementary? (ok my reading and possibly speaking is higher, but my writing is probably around there) and i want to sign up for ltko 2a. does that sound reasonable? i heard there’s a test around the first week just to see if you signed up for the right class, but i don’t really want to move my schedule around after it’s set.

on math, ok, so i have exactly no idea how i did so well on the ap calc bc exam considering that i was hitting a 3 on all my practice tests… (and in general, it takes me a lot of effort to get the A’s.) but now, i’m at a point where i have to take math 10c if i want credit. should i just retake 10a/10b?

freshmen seminars. are they worth taking? my orientation leader encouraged me to take it b/c one, it’s just interesting and two, easy credits. i’m coming in with a lot of credits (like 60 ish) from my community college… should i just add one more cuz it can’t hurt? or instead take hild1A/psych3?

I’m a freshmen that will begin in the fall semester of 09 and i was trying to figure out a schedule for myself and so far i chose to take
-chem 6a
-Math 10a
-mmw 1
…
I hope this schedule is not so difficult and is it going to be difficult for me to take chem 6a AND math 10 a together???
also if all the discussion classes are full, is it possible to talk to the TA or whoever is in charge and change the time of the discussion?

@da2xd: Chem 6A and Math 10A aren’t too bad- you just need to do homework and study a lot, manage your time wisely. I took Math 20C and Chem 6A together, and it’s not bad. It also depends on your teacher. As for MMW1, i heard it’s really writing intensive, but I’m from Marshall so I don’t know. Marshall Writing is pretty easy in comparison XD

If all the DI classes are full, you could talk to the professor and TA about it and see what happens. I don’t think they’ll change the time of the discussion, but they could try moving you into the class? I’m not sure on this one, but asking won’t hurt though. (: Good luck!

^Actually, MMW 1 has a lot of reading but NO papers due in the first quarter! So it’s not that bad. MMW1 is the easiest of the 6.

i was hoping to take chem6a with johnson (i was recommended that she was the best 6a teacher) but i got a crappy enrollment date… does her class fill up that quickly?

^ohhh yeah.

damn… guess i won’t be able to take her class… should i take czworkowski or stuart?
