CONS of going to UCSD

hey i hate to bring this up, but i want to make sure that i will not regret making this decision. feel free to post anything, good or bad. about opportunities, GE requirements, student-teacher relations, class size, food, dorms, events, campus, the six colleges, etc. i am especially interested in hearing from current students. i’m in at muir for human bio. want to double major in theatre and minor in something else. also want to study abroad. thanks!

The one I heard while there
-Parking is ****. For many it was really the only negative they had

The one I heard here earlier
-La Jolla isn't a happening place and therefore social life is boring at UCSD. I personally would disagree considering just how much u can do with shuttles and other peoples cars to get you to cooler places.

The one I'm hearing now
-Muir's dorms suck. Sorry you're not in Warren =P

i heard the one about social life too, but it's ironic because if everyone is not satisfied with the social life why don't they just go out and meet people like themselves if there are so many unsatisfied people. Anyways there are alot of us here on the forums and were all gonna be in dorms together, so I dont see why we cant make our own social life.

CONS of UCSD: <not my="" personal="" cons="" just="" some="" of="" what="" i="" have="" heard=""></not>

-only about 40% of students stay on campus on the weekends so it can get a little quiet. <i'm not="" sure="" about="" the="" %="" so="" if="" anyone="" has="" more="" accurate="" numbers="" put="" them="" up="">
-no football = no crazy alums/ parties/ less school spirit
-ppl get excieted about research not sports
-social hang out is the LIBRARY
-no rolling down the hall keg parties
-more isolation w/ 6 college system <i personally would like not having to live, sleep, eat, breathe w/ ppl in my major and meeting ppl with all sorts of majors, etc.
-if you want to live close to campus after dorms it is very expensive in La Jolla to find a decent place</i'm>

these are the only cons i could think of b/c I LUV UCSD! atleast after admit day! i'm still trying to let it soak in!

What about the ugly girls? I've heard that from many people..

somebody said muir dorms suck, i heard ther gettn renovated this summer, so theyl prbly be th nicest after that

other cons
- no strong div. 1 sports, little to none school spirit
- if u wana do fun stuf, u gota drive 20 minutes to san diego
- its a really competitive school, which is good and bad

stillmakic, from what I saw at Admit Day, the female ugliness factor is untrue. However, even me as a male, I found the men horribly ugly.

So, basically, the women are usually average to great, and the men are fugly to good.

i thought the girls were just fine on admit day, they were all chill and none of them seemed too snobish... hopefully they'll choose SD!! :)

I went on thursday and admit day for some stupid reason, but i must say the girls were much better on admit day. Definitely good.

Agree with wayyytooworried. The girls were pretty good. The guys scared me.

Hey, that's good for me! :D

About the parking thing, on my Revelle tour the guide told us it's $500 a year (which is really cheap for a years worth of parking) and you're guarenteed a spot - unless you leave in the middle of the day and some random person takes it - because it is assigned parking.

My biggest and only con for the school is the lack of sports - well the lack of division I football & men's basketball (since those two are the only two that matter to me)

I thought everybody was nice and well presented except for this girl in the ERC session who asked a question that new kind of uptalk while chewing gum. I remember someone saying that you shouldn't bring your car first quarter to get to experience campus more because having a car makes you more independent and less sociable.

aw, hearing all this stuff sucks major donkey balls.

before going to admit day, i was like 85% sure about going to UCSD. after admit day, it bumped up to maybe 97% and now i'm back down to 85.

social life during college is probably going to be just as important to me as academics. there's really nothing to do around San Diego? :</p>

well since you're down about ucsd some fun things about the school

revelle has this anchor that the freshmen paint as a tradition and then the frats take control of it and have an ongoing war to try to keep it their color (and regular students paint it to screw them up) - it sounded fun and cute to me

my friend from marshall was told that there is this event where they give you a tube (pool float) to sit in in the pool and you watch a water related movie (really bad explanation of it) - but that seemed fun and cute too.

about the food - i don't think it would be that bad, most colleges complain about their food regardless plus they have panda express, jamba juice, roundtable pizza, rubios, some sandwich place, a wendys, subway, and probably more i just didn't notice.

if you're worried about academics you probably shouldn't have applied to ucsd or any like respected school (college is ultimately about further your education)

social life is what you make of it. you can be a bum and sit on your butt in your room or you can get involved. it's all about the person, i think, not about the college. and i don't think you really need to leave the campus - they even have their own theater (as small as it may be it's still something) if you leave campus there's the beach, sea world, the zoo, downtown san diego with the gaslamp district - shopping - etc. & i'm sure you'll know SOMEONE with a car. it just takes a little effort. if you want keg parties just take a trip to the other san diego campuses.

I second that haleyhales! Plus there are shuttles and buses are FREE for us ucsd students. The beach is so close to UCSD that it will only be a five minute ride away, and its gorgeous! Plus you can tan on the lawn in front of your college anytime! ERC has great views of the ocean.

"However, even me as a male, I found the men horribly ugly"

Well fellas... I think it's our obligation to change this assumption!

Yea. don't be bummed. UCSD is a really cool place but there are always going to be some lacking qualities. Like someone said before the social aspect is what you make of it. If you are worried you may want to look into joining a sorority or fraternity (they aren't the old school party houses since houses aren't allowed at ucsd).

There's plenty to do in San Diego.. here's some stuff to do around UCSD:

Now, I don't go yo UCSD (yet), but I live in SD, so here are some cool places near UCSD.
-Downton La Jolla has neat shops and such.. its a short bus ride away (~2mi)
-La Jolla Village Square Mall - shops, theatre, etc - cool place, withing walking dist.
-La Jolla Cinema - plays independent/small films (I saw Riding Giants there - its a surf doc) withing walking dist.
-The BEST Ice-Blocking Hill in all of San Diego (at least that I've found, and not counting golf courses) is a short ways away.. Kate Sessions Mem. Park - just a huge grassy hill.. super fun
-The Torrey Pines Glider Port over the cliffs of Black Beach is a pretty cool spot (excellent pos-Mexican-food chill spot) and is walking distance
-Then of course, La Jolla Cove is cool - park, rocks to sit on over the ocean - I'd say bus on this one.
-I personally enjoy kayaking in the La Jolla caves over near the cove.. plenty of places to rent for good prices.. walk/skateboard distance.
-Its always good fun as well to try to talk yourself into the La Jolla Country Club and use their jaccuzi.. it's a super-rich hotel/club. It's tough to get in, but doable
-Then, just several more miles south, down by SeaWorld, is Mission Beach.. which is a very..interesting.. and cool place. Good small places to eat, Belmont Park and the coaster, etc. I'd say about 7mi.
-The Sports arena houses Koby's Swap Meet every weekend - it's an awesome place to go to get stuff that's cheap/weird. It's pretty big, and very fun (at least I like it). ~10miles, South of mission beach
-and, if you want Laser Tag, Ultrazone is San Diego's BEST. ~10miles, near SeaWorld and the Sports Arena.
-Then, ~2miles further south, is Downtown San Diego.. yeah tons of stuff there.

Hey do u kno how far qualcomm park (wher th chargers n padres play i think) is from th campus?
