Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

We really like the headmaster surprises from Dr. Curtis. We get to sleep in yeah! [Special Treat: Sleep In Tomorrow!](Bulletin – Deerfield Academy)

What was the difference in the new dress code anyways?

The special treat was amazing!

The new dress code was something like…we had to wear either a polo or a collared shirt? If I remember correctly but like I said it was never actually enforced during the school year.

All the thespians out there, please check out this hilarious comedy: [Bringing Comedy to Campus](http://deerfield.edu/2011/11/bringing-comedy-to-campus/) Also, the campus is abuzz with excitement about the upcoming Choate Day, Can’t wait.

Is deerfield really strict on which forms they accept? For the personal recommendation would they mind if I used a form from another school? I hate having to ask my teachers for multiple recommendations because there is a common math english and school report but not one for person recommendations

Yes, Deerfield accepts common recommendation forms, for example TABS.

Okay, but there is no common personal rec so did you just fill that out individually for each school or just one and sent it out to all schools?

Filling out one personal rec for all of the schools is what most people did and that’s what I did!

Deerfield is a member of the Round Square Conference and our students and faculty recently went to a round square conference at Wellington College. [Round Square Conference](http://deerfield.edu/2011/10/headlines-from-wellington-college-to-parents-weekend/). Also, we have cool clubs like the Harry Potter Club. It is very easy to start new clubs if you have new ideas. This year we started Robotics Club and Rugby Club.

If there was one thing you could change about Deerfield, what would it be? (I asked my Deerfield interviewer the same question and he said that he’d create another building for student recreation because he thought the Greer was too noisy.)

Hmm. That’s a difficult question especially when things work so well here. It’s not a small place where you are isolated and not too large where you can get lost. It’s just the right size. The teachers are amazing as is the student body. This year we started a great program called connect4 to improve the contact across the grades and I think it is a brilliant idea, just in time for us freshmen. I would probably have the teachers give a little less homework without losing the quality of the Deerfield education. Teachers here are demanding and expect us to do our best work in accord with our motto “Be worthy of your heritage.”

what do you think really impressed DA about you while you were applying? what does the school look for in their applicants and what part of the application process should i really focus on? (like is there a part of the application process to school focuses on more than the other parts?)

are there a lot of repeat freshmen? im young and I’m thinking of doing that…

okay and do a lot of people have their guidance counselor fill out the school report form…it says principal/counselor and i just always thought most people had their principal do it

Hopeful2board, The schools are looking for nice kids who can succeed at their school by making best use of what the school has to offer. In my view the important things are: 1. Great personality 2. Interview 3. Grades, 4. Recommendations, 5. Essays, 6. ECs, and 7. SSATs (nice to be above 85% for HADES). If you have sports, legacy hooks, you can be below average in some areas. I think I scored well across the board with no hooks. But you don’t have to do that to get in. To recap, they look at your whole file, not one or two things. Focus on doing your best in all areas.

Ehphant, There are some repeat freshmen, but I am not sure how many in total. I am also young for my grade, but I am doing well. If you can handle the academics, I don’t think you need to repeat. But if you feel you will benefit from repeating, by all means.

Helloel, Most of the time the guidance counselors do it, unless you happen to know the Principal well personally. But for schools, it makes no difference as long as you have a good recommendation from either.

Okay thanks! and also when should I start my recs? I’m really nervous to do ask my teachers haha. Mainly because I’m already in high school.

helloel, Better sooner than later as you have to tell them eventually anyway and it gives them more time during the holidays to write a thoughtful recommendation without rushing.
