Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

What is the dress code like for girls? Is it like they make it seem online?

"Class Dress – Girls

Girls’ class dress code requires two visible layers at the neckline; one of these two layers must be a blazer or sweater, and shoulders must not be exposed. Both layers must be worn, not carried. The only exception to the two-layer rule is for dresses with sleeves."

Is it this… stuffy? Or is this how they would prefer you to dress? Do girls actually have to comply to all of these standards? Do girls really wear this?

Yeah we take the dress code seriously.

First Dress Code Violation: Two hours of additional study hall in the library
Second Dress Code Violation: The violator’s pictures will be published in the online
newspaper Deerfield Scroll
Third Dress Code Violation: You’ll be invited for a lunch with the Headmaster

Lol, our dress code is nothing compared to what a King or a Queen have to go through every day.

I was just wondering if deerfield was more known as a great english school or math etc. or is it just more well known for it’s athletic ability?
Thanks!

Deerfield is an amazing place that believes in producing well-rounded graduates. The academics are rigorous and all academic areas are very strong be it humanities, math, or science and we do pretty well in athletics considering we are a smaller school compared to the larger schools to the east. We believe in work out for the mind, body, and soul. That’s what makes Deerfield such a unique place. Come visit us to see what a great boarding school can be like.

I can answer that question for you. A 2100 IS A PIECE OF CRAP! I got that EXACT score when I took the real SSAT and I got a seventy percentile so now I am taking it again. Aim for a 2250. That’s in the 90s. Hope this helps Jamieschiler.

If you have special interests, make sure you contact the teachers and coaches. Also keep in mind Deerfield is pretty generous in offering financial aid. Good luck with all your applications.

Anymore questions? March 10th is slowly approaching… :)

How many schools did you apply to when you applied?

I applied to 5 schools and got into my first choice Deerfield.

@Deerfield2015 Did you only get into Deerfield?

How do you keep track of whether Deerfield received certain pieces of your application? It is the only school I’m applying to that doesn’t have its own system and just uses Gateway to Prep Schools, which in turn doesn’t show test scores/interview/writing sample.

Thanks!

How hard would you say the integration is for a new 11th grader? As far as making friends, intense year on top of being new…

AN: I got into 4 schools and WL at 1 school.

CR: Deerfield will send you an online login to check your application status. In the meantime, you can call the admissions office to find out what parts of your application are in.

Helloel: Jr year entry would be challenging at any school due to academic and social challenges. If you can handle the academics, it will be easier to manage the social issues. Each year they admit about 40 Jrs who will all be in the same boat as you. But I’m a freshman, so take it for whatever it is worth. But my interactions with upperclassmen at Deerfield are cordial.

I applied to 5 schools as well…

I think I could handle the academics. But I don’t know if it would already be too cliquey by junior year. That’s my main concern.

Deerfield and another school ask the same question is it okay if I just use the same response for both of the essays? I can’t see why it would matter, but didn’t know if there was some sort of rule.

@helloel,
To address your concerns about social integration, why not consider applying as Repeat Soph?

@GMTplus7; would entering as a sophomore be easy for a student? I’m not asking this in a rhetorical or harsh way, I’m just wondering, since I will be entering as a sophomore. I know that it will be easIER, but how much difference will it make between each grade?

It would be better to get feedback from a Deerfield student-- would any here like to comment?

At BS in general, I would expect more support programs for Freshmen & Sophomores.

Yeah, I don’t think I will apply as a repeat sophomore for financial reasons. I don’t think I would get much aid because of my family’s income, but I would need it if I was going to school for 5 years instead of 4, but I can’t make that case to an admissions officer.
I also have another question, if they can’t meet your financial need will they not admit you? Or let you know that they can’t meet your financial need beforehand? I was just wondering; I saw something about that on one school’s website.
