Ask a Fall 2011 UCLA transfer student anything

So I decided to create this thread to hopefully provide prospective transfers with valuable information that could be used to give you guys a better understanding of the campus and its culture. What I want people to get out of this thread should be some general knowledge of UCLA from a students perspective and will hopefully prevent any regrets when choosing to attend this school or any other later down the road, which I will talk about later. Oh and I didn't know where to stick this so I'll just insert it here, its ok to have that CC inferiority complex. I started to develop it as soon as I was accepted. Doubt filled my head for the longest time and I began to question if I was right (smart enough) to attend the university; however, once classes began and I became accustomed to the quarter system I realized the classes here are not that bad, and are no more difficult than the ones I took at CC. If anybody is doubting their academic ability because they are a transfer student DON'T. If you get accepted into UCLA its because you genuinely belong. Transfer students are NOT stupid and lazy, in fact many transfer students I know actually received a 4.0 this quarter (most of them being south campus majors).

A little bit about me:
Last year I applied to UCLA, UCSB, and Davis as a History major. I was accepted into all three schools with a 3.51 GPA and was TAP certified, I had also submitted a TAG to both SB and Davis. For me it came down to either SB or LA, but I ended up choosing LA because the campus is gorgeous and it has a bigger school/stereotypical university feel, not to mention UCLA is better academically.

Various opinions about the school:
I have only been here for 1 quarter so my opinion might not be as valid as someone's who has been here for 2 or 3 years, but I am going to offer it anyways. All in all I am happy with my choice to attend UCLA. Living on campus in the dorms was definitely the way to go, as I have met some great people and have developed good bonds and friendships with them. The food is awesome, the student body is generally pretty attractive and outgoing, the campus is beautiful, the nightlife is great, and classes are not too difficult. If I had any regrets about the past quarter it would be these. 1) I wish I had gotten more involved in extra-curricular activities. I did participate in rush (and will gladly do my best to answer questions on that) but unfortunately I did not follow through, although I will try again in the spring. 2) I wish I would have gone to more football games, especially to the game against Cal and ASU. 3) I wish I wouldn't have f**ked around so much with my floormates, especially when it was time to get serious with my school work (my GPA paid the price last quarter for my lack of discipline).

Even though my view of UCLA is positive I have talked to a few people who have had regrets about attending, and have therefore provided me with a negative view about the school. Please note that the people who expressed these views tried to generalize most if not all UCLA students, which is really hard to do considering the enormous size of our undergraduate population. Two people that I have talked to say they find the people who attend this school to be arrogant, self-absorbed nerds who are constantly boasting about their academic achievements. One of the two people who said this also said that many students like to talk A LOT about academics, their GPAs, and or post graduate plans, even at parties. Two other guys I have talked to think that the girls that attend are *****y, materialistic, and cliquish and one of the two guys who made that statement also said he believes UCLA is over-hyped and is not all that it is cracked up to be. A couple of girls I talked to were not at all impressed by the variety of guys at UCLA, and rated them somewhat low in the looks category. But in all honesty those are the views of a few people. It is easy to find positive reviews about UCLA so I wanted to throw in some negative views just to provide a bit of balance.

Now onto the questions. Feel free to ask me anything and I will try my hardest to provide a well thought out response; however, I WILL NOT answer "chance me questions" because I do not work for UCLA and I am not an admissions officer. If you want to know what your chances are then use the search button and compare your stats to those of past transfer students. Now fire away!

...Its 2:15 am and I worked my ass off making this thread, hopefully people actually post in it and ask questions lol.

thank you for making this thread you will be bombarded with questions in the next couple of months, so stick around.

my question tho is:

Do you own both of these beautiful vehicles?

Is MY generalization true? : You are amongst a million different shining stars but at like UCD or UCI you can be one of a few shining stars and make a name for yourself

Does going to UCLA mean you can make rich friends who live in rich LA homes?

to #3…yes you can. You never know. My friend was in Hollywood at a club and got invited to Aubrey O’day mansion while they were filming her reality show.

^ awesome!

Thanks for making this thread!

How are the class curves in UCLA (or in the courses you’ve taken)?

Are clubs/orgs in UCLA active?

Any rich students drive a Lamborghini or Ferrari at ucla?

@UCkittychen. I owned a base model RSX but my sister totaled it, now I want to use the money my insurance gave me to buy an S2K. 2. Yes, I COULD be a distinguished student at Irvine or Davis if I chose to, meaning for me its all about how much effort one puts into their work. If I tried I know I can succeed anywhere, in fact I could be a distinguished student at UCLA, USC, Michigan, Stanford, NYU, Cal, Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, Penn, etc and graduate with Latin honors if I put all of my effort into my studies. Hard work beats talent IMO. I hope that answers your second question? If not then elaborate on it a little more so I can provide a better answer. (I don’t know if you were trying to get a certain answer out of me or wanted me to provide you with an arrogant response to prove a point). 3. Yes you can, though many of the people I’ve met, with the exception of my roommate, are not that “wealthy” and have no connections to people who live in rich LA homes. I know diddy’s son is going to be enrolled next year and Jerry Rice’s son is already a junior, so who knows ;)

@ Ferrari. I haven’t seen a UCLA student drive to school in a Ferrari or Lamborghini yet. If you want that you would probably have to go across town, if you know what I mean.

@ strive. 1) All of the classes I’ve taken have been in north campus and these kind of classes do not have curves, but I do know that some of my south campus floormates benefited from the curves that were set in a lot of their classes. 2) Many students are involved on campus and there are a whole plethora of opportunities at UCLA. If you were to join a club/organization at UCLA you will definitely not be bored, as they hold many meetings and events and are a great way to meet new people.

Vtec just kicked in yo

passwordjdm,

ha, thanks for the reply. & no i wasn’t being arrogant i was really asking, because i want to go to UCLA but don’t feel like being overpowered by all the BRUIN elites. I want to be someone. Do you have any samples of UCLA coursework?

Lol I never said you were being arrogant, I just thought you were expecting me to say something arrogant. I have a couple of test questions from my midterms and finals and I could post a couple of them to give you an idea, but I’m a History major and I’ve only taken History classes, so if i post them I don’t really know if they would be of use to you. As far as the work load goes again I’m a History major, but to give you some sort of an idea last quarter I had to read between 100-350 pages a week. In one class I had a quiz, two 2,500-3,500 word essays, and a final. In the other I had just a midterm and a final, and in my third and final class I had a midterm, final, and 12-15 page research paper.

And I don’t think you will feel overpowered or overwhelmed, sure there are a lot of smart people, but there are plenty of kids whose work ethic has declined since high school. You can thank partying, weed, alcohol, more partying, and more weed for that.

And rice rockets till I die! Or at least until I can afford an M3, Viper ACR, or 911…

ha i haven went through that weed phase. i went on tumblr and used the UCSD. WAIT NO, it was YouTube, and i typed in UCSD and these was a video of some UCSD kids trying to get “screwed up” off… snicker Jack Daniels Whiskey. My goodness, such amateurs, so many other way to get messed up off liquor, in a way that tastes so much better.

Anyways, I applied for poly sci and jewish studies. Hopefully I get in, not my first choice tho. Your assignments seem…regular.

How about that question about that curve. Oh and how about the ladies, Are they super down? Do the guys seem desperate and corny?

diddy’s son is gonna be enrolled next year? did he receive his admission letters a lot sooner than everyone else?

what is the minimum gpa to maintain for not get kick out of business econ at ucla?

[Sean “Diddy” Combs’ son Justin Combs to play UCLA football - ESPN Los Angeles](Sean "Diddy" Combs' son Justin Combs to play UCLA football - ESPN)

…hold up…scholarship?
http://necoleie.com/2011/11/29/justin-combs-awarded-full-scholarship-from-ucla/

I’m a history major and I’d like to know how you considered the classes. It seems its a lot more reading a week then I’m used to. D:

Nevertheless, can you tell me the classes you took, whether you felt prepared for them, the professor, how you liked the class and if you’d recommend it.

thanks.

Diddy’s son got an athletic scholarship…which I believe ALL athlete’s get scholarships. Schools don’t recruit athletes and then don’t give them scholarships lol silly people

@ferrari. Sorry I wouldn’t know :/. I would ask someone, but I don’t know any biz econ majors.

@UCkittychen. My roommate is a poly sci major as well. He had to retake statistics though and was enrolled in a poly sci statistics class I believe. ALL poly sci majors have to take that class and I’m pretty sure they had to write around 4 essays. You might wanna double check me on that assuming you’re interested in going to UCLA. And the girls at UCLA are pretty hot, idk if they are down because all of the girls I met have boyfriends :/. And the guys at UCLA are regular guys. Yea you have a lot of nerdy guys and bros/tools/******s from all different nationalities, but there are plenty of regular looking guys as well. And no, liberal arts classes are not graded on a curve, only science classes.
