I am majoring in Mathematics, but I’d like to double that with economics or statistics. Since I am an Echol’s Scholar, I’ll have a few more classes open, spaces that could possibly go towards another major, so would a double major in math/econ or math/stat be doable at UVA?

jvat, either of these double majors is possible, even for somebody who’s not Echols. Just be aware of the possibility of double-majoring from the time you get here so that you will take any prerequisites out of the way in your first couple of years. Your academic advisor will be able to help you with the logistics. But it’s not a big deal, and some people pick up a double major pretty late in the game and still do just fine.

Do you happen to know if Echols Scholars have to be housed in one dorm?

Yes. All Echols and Rodman scholars are housed in dorms on Alderman Rd. I believe the dorms they live in now are being torn down this summer to be replaced by new ones, but I don’t know the timeline for that or if it will effect Echols housing, but they are always housed together.

How easily were you able to go about signing up for classes your first year, and how are they with taking your AP Credit?

All of the (preliminary) course registration take place at orientation in the summer. Then, open registration opens up just before move in, where you can start shuffling around your classes or get onto waitlists, etc. Besides SIS being awful, it’s a pretty easy process. And UVa has a great drop/add period so you can even change your schedule around after classes start. As far as AP credits, don’t worry too much about needing to get them in over the summer. I never paid to have my official IB scores sent in, but all I had to do was bring my diploma, which listed the scores, to the test credit office in Monroe Hall and they took care of it. This was towards the end of my first semester.

I was at the Day on the Lawn with my son. It was interesting to get a tour of one of the Alderman Road dorms, while the students told us that the dorm would not exist in a few months. They had fun painting murals on the walls in advance of the demolition.

It was explained to me that there was a rush to build the dorms during cold weather in the circa early 70s. They put an additive in the concrete to help in cure in cold weather. However, that additive over the years has reacted with the rebar, and caused a need for reconstruction or demolition. I’m told the new new dorms are going back to the old hallway layout.
