Mitsu, where do you live?

I don’t think there is an actual premed program. You just take the prerequisite courses for med school- there is an advisor.

Can you get part-time jobs in GW? Do the jobs pay well?

I meant the accelerated program for medicine . What’s the acceptance rate ? And what hAppens if I get into GW early decision but I don’t get into the accelerated program ? Is it still binding ?

Hey I have a few questions for anybody who wants to answer them for me.

Does GW have a track team? I haven’t seen anything about it on their website and I know that space is scarce in DC, but I am a big track runner and really want to continue in college.

I have been in private boarding school for 4 years now and have no problems living in dorms with tons of people. I am just worried that the excess partying/noise etc in dorms like Thurston may interfere with my studying. Especially because I have adopted very diligent study habits. So, is it common for most student to leave the dorms to study and is Thurston as crazy as I have read it is? I would really like to live in a big dorm thats lost of fun like Thurston, but not at the expense of my grades and academics. What dorm would you recommend?

What is the consequence for getting caught with alcohol? What about if your roommate has it and you’re not involved? Is it common for faculty to patrol the dorms looking to get kids in trouble? Just curious because if you get caught with alcohol in my school you are most likely expelled and it seems as though teachers are always searching for rule violators.

How would you rank the difficulty of the school of business? I have already taken the majority of freshman classes and am just planning on taking them again so I think it will be easy. I just don’t want to be surprised.

Is there an athletic center that is open to all the students? I have searched GW’s website and there isn’t really any solid information on their athletic center. I am going to visit in a few days so I will find out anyways, but this has been bothering me for a while.

Do a large population of students eat meals at GW or at least cook for themselves in the dorm? I don’t want to be stuck spending hundreds of dollars a week going out to eat at restaurants when I have a meal plan already paid for.

the BA/MD program has about a 3% acceptance rate. Very very selective- about 700 applicants for 25 spots.

IDK about your other question. I tend to think there might not be ED for that program.

9:00AM Registration
10:00 AM Intellectual Life
Following the Intellectual Life session, you may take a tour of the Foggy Bottom Campus, visit residence halls, and attend a variety of student services open houses.
12:00-2:00 PM
Mount Vernon Lunch (free of charge) and Open House
3:00-4:00 PM Colonial Celebration

What is Intellectual Life and Colonial Celebration? Also, are parents welcome to this or is this a student only thing? (APRIL VISIT DAY)

In response to asd1234 (I’m a current undergrad):

Not sure…sorry.

It is very common for students to go to the library or other quiet places to study so it shouldn’t be a problem. And the crazy atmosphere of Thurston really is exaggerated. It’s not as wild as it sounds. I promise.

There are no major consequences to getting caught with alcohol. You may have a meeting with SJS and get a warning or something. Not a big deal.

I have a few friends in the Business school and from my understanding it is pretty difficult, but not much more difficult than the other schools at GW. The difficulty in the Business School is that they have some extra requirements during Freshman year where they meet every other Friday and things like that… They also have a pretty solid set of classes that they will have to take and their path is much more rigid than in the other schools.

Yes, it’s called the Lerner Health and Wellness Center. You should be able to find some info online. It’s really nice.

Both. There is a Safeway and Trader Joe’s near campus so you can buy your own food but keep in mind that not all rooms have kitchens. None of the Freshman dorms have their own kitchens.

Yumi696: A very energetic and enthusiastic way to orient students (& parents) to GW life, including intro. to many administrative departments & stuff. Parents (& siblings) are welcome and have separate programs from the students. It’s well worth it.

Yumi696, I agree with 5Krunner, lots of worthwhile administrative matters. Also, you get to have a separate lunch with a group in your intended department, and get to meet some of your future professors, plus administrative matters geared towards your intended department, in the intellectual part of it. As to the Colonial celebration part of it, general administrative stuff plus very nice tours, if I recall correctly.

spt.leonidas-
I’m not so familiar with that program these days so I’ll refrain. Did you apply to both it and CCAS as a history major? Your odds of history major are likely greater.

“Can you get part-time jobs in GW? Do the jobs pay well?”

A good number of on-campus jobs are work study, which is unfortunate. There are some staff part-time jobs on campus, and there are always part-time jobs in DC itself. In a city like this, desirable entry level/student jobs (and even unpaid internships) are very selective. There are retail stores like Starbucks you could work at, or small businesses, non-profits, etc. in the city itself you could apply to.

“Does GW have a track team?”
It used to… I think it at least still as intramural/club track.

… excess partying/noise etc in dorms…
If you live in Thurston, get noise-cancelling headphones and earplugs. Plan to spend a lot of time studying in the library.

What is the consequence for getting caught with alcohol?
Actually, it depends on who you get caught by, the circumstances, etc. RA who turns it into the school? If it’s your first time, you might just have to take an alcohol awareness class. If it’s a common occurrence, it could be worse (actually, it could be worse anyway… but, from what I’ve seen, plenty of people manage to try alcohol underage and manage to not get caught. While I suggest being of age, at least be careful.) If you get busted at an off-campus party or use a fake ID in a club,… it IS/can be a big deal. My tip: drink off age, and at least be smart about it (loud parties = just asking to get caught). Don’t get too trashed anyway… that’s never a good idea.

“How would you rank the difficulty of the school of business?”
Some of the classes are easy, while some accounting/economics classes are hard.

Is there an athletic center that is open to all the students?
Yes, HelWel is open to all.

“Do a large population of students eat meals at GW or at least cook for themselves in the dorm?”
Yes. There are plenty of places to eat on campus- some pricier than others. Some off-campus places accept GW dining dollars, too. You can cook in a dorm, though I don’t know many people who cook anything other than microwaveable things or who make sandwiches.

Your stats sound in range, depending on the quality of your school. What are your ECs and so on? As far as financial aid, if your family is in the upper middle class, I wouldn’t count on full aid.

bnatsfan7-
There are a million exceptions to any rule. While it’s no Georgetown to get into, admissions standards are/have gone up at GW over the years. The quality of your high school (i.e., McClean High is a great high school, and a GPA from there outweighs a GPA from a terrible high school) is a factor, as are recommendations, essays, scores, luck, and so on. I’ve seen people with better scores than I get rejected, and some with worse get accepted-- that’s the nature of the game. Financial aid is a huge problem here. Need based is big, while merit (without need) is severely lacking and- sadly- unfairly limited.

Mitsukoi-
“How do I get home?”
Take a cab or subway to the airport, and fly home.
Trains are really only regional (time and cost are a factor going anywhere other than the Bo-Wo corridor/Boston-Washington area). You could find parking for a car here, but it’s expensive, and a pain (though nice if you like weekend trips or suburban grocery shopping). If you’re from the region, a bus (Chinatown Bus from DC-NY, for example) and trains are a reasonably cheap option to travel home, but if you’re not from here, the only realistic method is really flying.

Glad to help. :)

I would say you have a good to great chance (cultural and socioeconomic background, strong GPA, community service). Are you taking SATs or ACTs again? I would highlight your unique ECs or life background in the essays (so, karate and Amnesty… everyone is in NHS).
I say apply.

Location: North Jersey
Income : <$50k, but it turns out my parents have some stock shares that are worth substantial amount of money…
Ethnicity / Gender : Asian Female
GPA: 3.9872 W; Top 10% of the class (270 students)
Prestige of the school : Not so high in this area, and recently, our school became infamous for its grade deflation; someone with a 2250 and about the same GPA as mine got rejected RD this year…wth?
EC: about 250+ hours of community service (expects to have about 300hrs done by the time I apply), MUN, Debate, Key Club, NHS, and possible volunteer/internship position at a local govt over the summer.
Recommendations: Both teacher recommendations are expected to be GREAT; possible additional rec from the councilwoman/mayor whom I may end up working for.
Essay: N/A, but will work my butt off for it.
AP tests: USH (4) - sophomore year; WH and Lang/Comp junior year; Gov, Psych, Spanish, Calc AB, Lit to be taken during senior year.
Subject tests: USH (750); Math Level 2 and WH this June.
SAT : 730 M; 740 W; 690 CR = 2160
Intended Major: IR or poli sci, but leaning towards IR. First choice, however, is the 5 year program BA in poli sci and MA in public policy.
Hook: …none as of now? If it is rare to see an Asian girl in an IR school (which I highly doubt), then I guess that? But I believe the internship will be one if I get it.

Maybe this would help you a bit more? Thanks so much!

about the “where else are you applying” section .

is it better to lie about it ?
ill be applying to Columbia, Duke, Drexel and johns hopkins and some suny schools.
is it better to just lie and say something like Suny Albany (not applying there) and Spelman college?

and another thing . does it even MATTER since im applying ED I anyway ?

My daughter just decided to accept GW! Great to hear something positive on this thread. It was beginning to feel rather ominous. She is very excited about the school, the city…and advice for an incoming freshman would be welcome!

Do we get to visit Mount Vernon on an April Visit Day?
