In regards to HellWell, yes, some people (mostly freshman girls) actually “dress up” to look “cute” to go to the gym. Most people get over that after freshman year. Still, it is a bit of a shallow gym.

Most people fly home for holiday breaks. Christmas and Spring Break.

GWU usually doesn’t even let you stay in the dorms during Christmas break. Not without some special exception, anyway. If you were to be there, it would be like a ghost town. Don’t plan on coming back during the break to get something you forgot. You may or may not be able to even get in.

There are a few (very few) that stay during Thanksgiving Break. Like I said, most fly home.

You’re also required to leave/move out of dorms by the last day of the semester, or right after your final exams, each spring. If you “work” (volunteer, whatever) Commencement, you can get a special pass to stay on campus slightly longer. Otherwise, they get you out of there in a hurry after the spring semester is done.

Dorms can be a pain in the butt for that reason.

Fur Nightclub used to host the annual GW Halloween Party. Fur is a lot of fun. It’s hood and I’ve always had a good time there. The 9:30 club is okay. You guys are better off waiting until you’re 21 so you can experience the lounge life. Shadow Room is on campus. It’s really small
but it’s a lot of fun.
McFadden’s is a blast. Sometimes I miss that place. And 51st State has great 10 cents wings on Weds. (Or at least I think it’s Weds. It might be Tues).

Honestly, dorm parties are a lot more fun that DC clubs (18+). I used to host parties at my dorm and we always had some fun.

Somehow partying it up in a freshmen dorm just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Actually, it never did it for me. I suppose for 18 year old kids that “can’t” drink in a club, a dorm party could offer that (not legally, of course… plus there’s always the risk of liquor violations on campus). At least clubs have a dance floor and you can dress up-- beats dressing up to go next door to someone else’s room in Thurston to just sit there. I would rather go out to party, not cram 20 people in some nasty freshmen dorm room sitting on the dorm floor/bunk beds drinking. Then again, that’s why they’re 18 and I’m not. Yuck. Boy, do I sound old.

McFadden’s is fun and closer/by campus.

I would take a cab to Fur with that area being what it is. Worth a trip at least once.

51st St… that’s decent too. Too sports bar for me. At least they show NY games on TV…

There’s also Club Heaven and Hell in Adam’s Morgan. Cheesy theme nights.

Ultrabar is a little less dive bar / dive club-ish than the above.

I’m not sure how I forgot about Cobalt, but… yes. Cobalt. Go there at least once!

Ultrabar is cool. Love the Club (next to Fur) is okay. You’re about taking a cab to those places. It’s safer. I DON’T recommend driving your car there unless you get valet parking (but that’s even a risk).

Gwgrad or Hellobaby or anyone…

Did you go to DC Bound or Adventure Bound before freshman year and do you think they’re worth it? The prices seem pretty reasonable by GW standards and the trips sound really fun.

Hi,
I didn’t participate in that program. I had a busy senior year. It sounds like a good program. It is affordable, you should particpate. Like I said, eariler, college is an investment so you have the right to be selective with the school that you choose to go to.

mmmgirl --

Adventure Bound is fun. Do it… assuming you won’t need to go into debt to do so.

Many full-time GWU jobs offer tuition benefits up to a certain dollar amount each year.

Not a bad option if you want to work full-time while attending school part-time.

I haven’t seen any posts here about the journalism program or the School of Communications and Public Affairs. I would love to hear any insights about the program or the school. I noticed some messages about internships being difficult to get. Am I correct in assuming those are the high level business or government positions? How about journalism/media internships?

Thank you everyone!

Hi, I just got my acceptance letter for the GWU school of Business. Im excited to have the chance of being part of the GWU community. I would just like to know, how is the finance program there in terms of employment opportunities and internships?
Thank you for your time

daisy4- I know a couple of people who have journalism internships as freshmen so don’t worry. You can also try working for the hatchet too.

mmmgirl- I did DC BOUND!!! so worth it!! you move in before the chaos (and it is actually madness) and you get to make friends before most people even arrive on campus. The trips are fun too. So worth the money.

Hi, I am going to major in International Business so I can go to law school to become a corporate lawyer. Is this a good undergrad major? Or what would you suggest!?

jlyons01133 -

Try for finance-related internships. I know a few who interned at the World Bank, IMF, etc. and landed jobs there after they graduated. Finance isn’t a popular major, but I know a few who’ve done it and seemed to like it.

daisy4-

Yes. Internships at the most desirable spots are hard to get. World Bank, IMF, White House, CNN remote shows, etc. are all very competitive and hard to get. Why not try for a real paying job (entry level) at a very small company? Then you’d get more experience than photocopying for some “bigger name” internship, plus you could get paid.

chalalala-

Yes. Though if I were you, I would try to specialize in something like patent law, instead of being a corporate lawyer. There are too many of those already. Find a niche market.

How is the Anthropology program at GWU?

Hellobaby…

My daughter got accepted at GW and based on the reviews, she is somewhat uncertain about attending. She is strongly considering the state university instead. Financial aid package, great!! Being a black student, warm but not overly friendly; somewhat reserve, she feels that she will not fit in. The reviews about the rich, snobbish, entitled students leaves her not too keen in attending. My question is, what was your overall experience? If you could do it all over, would you attend GWU?

What do students who lives far from home do on short breaks? Are they allowed to stay on campus?

The Anthropology program is pretty good. The field itself? Harsh hiring prospects.

Attend the school with the best financial aid award. You don’t want to go into huge debt.
