Ask a Peddie Student

Hi, I've been getting a few messages about Peddie, and I'd love to answer any questions you guys might have! I know how nervous you must feel, since it's before March 10th! And if it's after, then you must be so happy! Haha! But anyway, I'd love to help and make things clearer for you. Ask away! And good luck!

What is the food like?

Is there enough space in your dormroom?

How much homework do you typically get?

How much sleep do you typically get?

How do you like the classes?

What do you think the difference is between the Peddie feel/vibe and L’ville feel/vibe? Many people seem to be applying to both MAPL schools, and I am curious about the similarities and differences. I have both view books, I experienced the tours and I did the interviews. I am just wondering what you think?
Also, I have heard that L’ville’s science program is not its strength. Which academic programs are the best and worst at Peddie?

The food is okay - it depends on what they have. They do have a big selection, though. They have a salad bar, pasta, sandwiches, and cereal all the time for lunch and dinner, so there's always something to eat. Sometimes the food is really good - and I'm a vegetarian and there's pretty much always a good vegetarian thing to eat. Family style, our sit down meal twice a week, is usually really good food. It's fun, too!

My room is one of the smaller ones, but it's definitely not too small. My roommate and I moved our furniture around probably 5 times already, and right now it's really good and we have a lot of room. We used to have our beds bunked, too, so you can have that if you have a small room.

I usually get 2 hours of homework, which is how long study hall is. But, sometimes I have more if I have to study or work on a project.

Lights out is at 10:30 for freshman, and I get up around 7, so I usually sleep around 8 hours. Some people sleep in a lot later, till about 7:30, but I go to breakfast, which is from 7-a little after 8 (the first class is at 8)

I really like the classes! They're really fun and the teachers are great. My favorite is humanities, which is a freshman class that combines history and English. It's great.

How many sophomore, junior transfers are there typically?

MB4HSWW -

I applied to both schools, and Peddie was my first choice. I think Lawrenceville might be a little bigger (I forget), so that's definitely a difference. I think Peddie has more day students, too. Other than those, I'm not really sure about the differences....

Hmm.... I don't really know what the strengths and weaknesses would be, but science is definitely not the worst - a new building was just built in 2006, I think, and it's really great and high-tech. I think all the subjects are probably equal, though.

raiderade -

I think there are probably about 10 new sophomores every year, but I'm not sure about juniors. I know it's less, but I'm not sure exactly how much.

Do you remember when you received your e-mail decision, in your case acceptance? They said they'd be sending them on March 10th, but that could mean 12:01 a.m., or 10:00 a.m. Also, any idea when the new athletic facility will be completed?

HutHut07 -

I don't think I got my e-mail decision. I got my letter in the mail this day last year, because it was a Saturday. I live close, though, so I think that's why.
They are supposedly doing a lot of work on the athletic facility over Spring Break (we're on break now - that's why I'm on here so much!) and the summer. I'm not sure when it will be completed, though.

Who do you hang out with in the summer? Friends from Peddie, maybe at the beach? Friends from you old school where you live?

Do you miss bs when you are home for breaks?

MB4HSWW -

I'm a freshman, so I haven't experienced the summer yet, but it's probably going to be a little bit of both, more so with old friends than Peddie friends. I'm on break now and I've hung out with my old friends a few times already and I'm seeing my Peddie friends this week.
Oddly enough, sometimes when I'm home, I do miss Peddie because I'm bored or whatever. Not now, though, because I've only been home for a few days, and we just got done with finals so it's nice to rest!

I know Peddie and Blair are long time rivals. How do you feel about the rivalry? Is it fun? I'm sure it's very competitive, but I hope it's not nasty. Both schools seem so decent. I'd be happy if my son were accepted to either, as I'v developed a real affection for Blair Adacemy.

The rivalry is very fun! We had Blair Week, which meant dress up days every day and then on Saturday, we had Blair Day. This year, it was at Blair, so all the games were there. We won and it was so much fun! Then, we went back to school and had the homecoming dance. The entire week was so much fun. I think the rivalry is nice and it's a great tradition!

My son applied to both Peddie and Lawrenceville

What made Peddie your 1st choice?

You said you live close -- Do you spend weekends at Peddie? Is there enough weekend activities?

Peddie dorms by grade, correct? If yes, how well have you gotten to know older students?

What surprised you most about Peddie -- another words, what weren't you expecting?

My impression based on the very few Peddie students I've met is that Peddie is a "laid-back" school -- although the academics are top-notch, there isn't as much busy work and reading overload as other schools -- Do you agree?

How is the drug situation? Peddie has a lot of day students and I have heard schools with many day students have a bigger drug flow -- don't know if true, but logically makes sense.

Notnim -

1.) I really liked Peddie the first time I went there for the open house - I just got a great feeling about it and loved it. I liked how it was small, too, because I felt like there was a great sense of community.

2.) You're only allowed to leave 4 weekends a term, which makes that about half. Breaks and long weekends don't count, though. I usually go home 3 or 4 times a term. The other weekends I usually have something to do - whether there's something going on at school, like a dance, or trips to the mall or movies.

3.) There are dorms just for freshman, but other than that, it is all mixed once you become a sophomore. I don't know any upperclassmen really, but some people do, especially the ones who play varsity sports.

4.) I was really surprised at how easy it was to make friends. I was really nervous, but even on the second day, everybody was hanging outside for a cookout and making friends. It was very comfortable.

5.) I think this is pretty true. Nobody is super competitive or stressed out and I never feel like I'm going to fail, because the teachers are always there to help.

6.) I have never heard of anybody doing drugs. Even though there is a large day student population, as far as I know, nobody does drugs.

OMG!
