i’m sure i saw some Vietnamese students. who knows, there may be hoards of invisible ones walking around too, but i wouldn’t know. because they’re invisible.

^ lol. Would “Is there a noticeable Vietnamese population at Stanford?” have been a better question?

haha i’m just messing with you, it was worded fine. i can’t really answer your question though… :P

Yes, there’s a noticeable Vietnamese population. At least, I know a handful of Vietnamese students. And to my knowledge, they are all fully visible.

how easy is it to hook up/date and how often does it occur

ew…

haha agreed.

sooo… how about that question i asked?

would it be a bad idea to bring my $650 bike to school? are bike thefts common? i’m thinking about selling it and buying a cheap one.

I have a friend at Stanford - he says grads and undergrads don’t interact all that much, except for undergrads that join big life science labs…

tx2000, apparently they’re more common than one would think. But my sources are the bike shop (which profits from us buying $100 locks) and disgruntled students who HAVE had a bike stolen. Still, I’m not sure if you should bring that sweet bike over. If you can buy a really cheap one, do that instead.

When I did a program at Stanford last summer, a girl had her bike stolen…and she had a lock. (a cheapo kind, but a lock nonetheless)

what kind of bike is it? i’m bringing a nice-ish road bike. its older than me and still in basically mint condition. the paint is a little worn, but thats good because it doesn’t look as attractive. however, i’d still value it at $400 at least. I’ll be buying a Kryptonite u-lock. The bike shop is right about the quality of locks, Kryptonite is the best and the other brands generally all suck in one way or another, but they do screw you on prices.

I’ll probably buy one of these two:
[Amazon.com: Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 LS Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 11.5-Inch): Sports & Outdoors](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B001ASWIZ6/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance)
[Amazon.com: Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 9-Inch): Sports & Outdoors](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000LPG3D2/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance)

spending $50 on a good lock is worth it- much better than having your bike stolen.

This is a fine example:
[There, I Fixed It: Epic Kludges + Jury Rigs I Accept Your Challenge](http://thereifixedit.com/2009/07/24/epic-kludge-photo-i-accept-your-challenge/)

I’d say go ahead and bring as nice a bike as you want. The thing is, if you have a U-lock and you VERY consistently lock your bike well (wheel to the frame to an object) it won’t get stolen. People only run into problems when they’re just going inside for a second and they don’t bother to lock it. Bikes not locked to other objects also sometimes get thrown and lodged high in trees, usually by absurdly strong and drunk individuals.

t91,
I think that’s a perfectly understandable question (why is that “ew…”?)
I think both the dating and hookup scene at Stanford depend on the person. Hooking up is generally understood to be pretty easy, I mean, the school even helps out with FMOTQ. That combined with parties such as ‘Durandom Hookup’ (hosted by the house, Durand) and basically any drunken frat party make it fairly easy for anyone interested to get a little action.
Dating has a bad reputation at Stanford. It is said that students either hookup randomly or are in long term practically married relationships because they don’t have the time or social prowess to date. I’ve always thought this was a ridiculous complaint as it’s completely within individual control. Wanna date? Go ask someone out (irrespective of your gender)!

It’s super easy for federal work study students, and a little harder for everyone else.
I don’t know if you can do this now, but the best approach seems to be to get on cardinalcareers.stanford.edu and just submit loads of resumes. Good luck!

About bikes, locks are usually about twenty bucks (extra large ones thirty) and can be bought from the bikeshop. It’s a *necessity *that you get a lock. Can your bike get stolen? Yes. Even if it is locked? Certainly. If it’s not locked? You’re asking for it. However, mine did not get stolen yet quite a few of my friends did lose their bikes even when they were locked. Moreover, losing a seat, a tire, a handlebar, etc is not too uncommon. Don’t bring a bike that you’d be devastated to lose is all I can say.

actually the campus bike shop sells u-locks for about $40 to $70, not $20. they sell cable locks for $10 and $20, but thats about as good as having no lock at all because all you need is a decent pair of bolt/wire cutters and its gone. if your friends were using cable locks at the time the bikes were stolen then i’m not at all surprised.

the campus bike shop lock page:

my post above has much better prices on the same exact locks from amazon.

maybe i’ll just bring my skateboard instead…
