@njgirl33 there are some clothing stores near the campus. There is a mall in Santa Monica.

@njgirl33 , the Westside Pavilion is a close-by mall. It is three levels and has mostly everything - macy’s, clothing stores (h&m, forever 21…), food court, a pet store, etc… You take Westwood blvd (the entrance of campus where westwood intersects le conte) down to Pico blvd. and you will hit the bridge between the West and East sides of the mall right at Westwood and Pico (There is a large clock on the East side overlooking this intersection). If you are driving, it is usually easier to park on the East side in the garage, or at least I usually manage to find spots here (you will make a left into the parking lot immediately after passing beneath the bridge). There is a bus stop on one of the corners, so I am pretty sure you can easily find a bus route that goes through here from the campus if you do not have a car. It is a 10-20 minute drive with traffic.

@nicky23 I was in that area once, and passed by nordstrom. Is the parking garage parking free?

@xxCollegesxx as you enter the parking structure, you will get a parking ticket. The first 3 hours are free, 3-4 hours are $5, + $2 every 30 minutes after that.

Greetings!
I am not sure if P/NP class, such as Physics 4AL, will affect GPA. Anyone has an idea?

Thanks!

P/NP only affects GPA if you get an NP. Then it counts like an F.

@qianxuweiren I’m not sure if it differs from school to school, but at my CCC “P/NP” only counts as having passed or not passed the class without affecting your GPA either way.
For example, I did P/NP for a math class. Did not pass, received a “NP” as a grade and it did not affect my GPA for the semester nor my overall. That was the beauty of it.
If I can remember correctly, the catch is that you can only take so many classes as “P/NP”, and you cannot do this option for pre-reqs.

Hey all,
I have an oddly specific question about the desks in the dorms. I’m wondering how well I could fit a computer monitor on the desk, and if the desktop shelf is high enough to fit a monitor underneath it.
So, does anyone know or have a rough estimate of the space between the desk and the bottom shelf? [Image for clarification.](http://i.imgur.com/mbIv5.png)
Also, any thoughts about bringing a monitor to the dorms? I’m thinking it would be nice to use with a laptop.

It’s not tall enough for a stand-alone monitor, those will have to go in front of the shelves.

Thank you!

@nicky23: yeah, P/NP courses cannot be used to satisfy pre-req. I have heard of that. But isn’t it weird that Physics 4AL is a required while P/NP course?

@dinoian: that makes sense. :)

Hi.

I was lucky enough to get accepted into both Cal and UCLA.
Cal offers a program called the Sage Scholars Program ([UC Berkeley ? SAGE Scholars Program](http://sagescholars.berkeley.edu/)).

I am VERY interested in this opportunity as it is focused at giving underprivileged students increased opportunities.

I’m curious, does UCLA have any comparable programs?

Thanks!

I have a few questions! Ok 1. How easily can I get into the Comm major after freshman year? I know I can’t apply till I’m a junior but I’m worried about not getting in then being screwed out of what I want to study.
2. How good is the career center? Do they have international internships? I’m deciding between UCLA and ( don’t yell ) USC and they have internship opportunities In new York and Paris in my field
3. How easily can I get classes? I should be a sophomore with ap credit but idk if that counts since I just got off the wait list. This is especially an issue because I’ll need certain pre requisite for Comm.
4. I hear there is a lot of competition between classmates because of the way profs grade here, and that people are less open to helping each other or working together. Is that true?
5. Do I have an advisor that can help me with getting classes and planning for study abroad or do I need to do that myself? And is it true that you need to make a separate appt with your advisor to register for each class?
6. Does the comm department prepare you specifically for a career or is it broad and theoretical?
7. How easily can you get jobs after graduation? Is the alumni network good?
8. What things have made you really like UCLA? :)

Hi.

Does anyone know when international students should be getting information on getting their F-1 visa. I submitted by SIR a while ago and still have yet to get any information on it… Kind of freaking out…

Thanks!

do u have any premed friends

if so how hard were the classes for them?

Not the OP, but whatever

It’s not hard to get classes, but you may not get the time you want. Sophomore standing won’t help you until winter quarter, but it is a big help. For fall, you will be put into an orientation group during the summer and will have a NSA to help you with signing up for classes (you can ask them about study abroad and they might know or at least point you in the right direction). When you’re signing up your group will draw straws or something to determine who gets to go first. They say that they hold spaces in the popular classes for later sessions but it will be easier if you have an earlier orientation.

I’ve not seen any competition yet. The only curved classes are math and some of the sciences, and so far the classes are so big that one person’s score wouldn’t affect the curve that much.

Basically everything about UCLA is amazing except for a few specific things haha

I’m going to be taking some AP tests that, if I pass, will earn me credit for several courses at UCLA.
When does UCLA typically receive AP test scores?
Also, should I schedule my new student orientation after they receive my scores? Or sign up for an earlier orientation to have a better chance at getting the classes I need?

Hi, quick questions!
-I’m currently undeclared, l&s. Is it possible to switch to COE? I didn’t have any idea what major i was interested in back in nov, but now I seem to like biomed/mech/electrical/aero eng! Are there people who switch at orientation?
Thanks a ton :D

For UCLA students admitted as freshmen who are presently in a non-engineering major, outside of HSSEAS (e.g. Math) and attempting to change to a HSSEAS major
(e.g. Civil Engineering):
- you will need a minimum 3.5 grade point average in courses which are preparation* for the engineering major
- applicants must show that they have taken a combination of at least two (2) engineering/science/math courses per term, while enrolled in a minimum of 12 units per term.

Students who are interested in changing majors to computer science or computer science and engineering must also take a programming course** before change of major will be considered.
IF you are currently a freshman, you may request a change of major based on the following schedule: during your first year, you may apply after you have completed a minimum of two quarters, two required Mathematics courses, AND two other required courses (Chemistry, Physics or Life Science courses) at UCLA.
During your second year, you may apply after you have completed at least three required Mathematics courses and three other required courses (Chemistry, Physics or Life Science courses) (6 total).
Non HSSEAS students, as one of the six (6) courses to be considered for your change of major petition, may substitute COMPTNG 10A and 10B for one of the Chemistry, Physics or Life Science courses.

*Required preparatory courses for all HSSEAS majors include:
MATH 31A, 31B, 32A, 32B, 33A, 33B, PHYSICS 1A, 1B, 1C and CHEM 20A.

Does anybody know how I can cancel my application for the 6 week summer program? I realized how much I want to spend time relaxing and with my family before I go off to college. Will I still be able to make as many friends if I choose not to go to the summer program and just go straight to college? I’m very conflicted. I kind of feel like I’ll be missing the opportunity to meet a lot of people but at the same time, I don’t want to burn myself out before the academic year even starts. lol
