It worked really well and it’s not very big. Massmom’s point about the box fan is well-taken. My D lived in a Tower complex dorm and the casement windows were too narrow to accommodate a box fan.

We drove up and brought four underbed storage drawers (stackable), a three-drawer small plastic chest, and a mini fridge. All of these fit under a lofted bed. We packed the storage drawers and chest, and brought clothes up on hangers in plastic bags to just put in the closets immediately. My D said she could have gotten by with 1/3 fewer clothes than she brought. And she is a clotheshorse. Outerwear will take up a lot of room (coats, boots).

One thing the girls used a lot was a folding rack (for wet towels, workout gear, wet jackets etc. )

One thing my D borrowed (and will bring next year): a sledding saucer. One of her roommates lives in MA and provided sleds for the huge snowstorm last year. Wellesley students used to go traying on Severance Green hill but the dining halls don’t have trays anymore, so students need their own sledding devices for the inevitable snowstorm.

Also, if your D is planning on participating in a club sport or musical group that goes to weekend events at other campuses in the Northeast, a sleeping bag is nice to have.

I just found if your kids use edu email to register Amazon Prime account, the first six months are free for Prime, after six months the Prime account is half for college student

NJSue, thank you so much for this great advice! I’ve got an unused folding rack just hanging out in my laundry room, so I will send that with her. Hadn’t thought about the lack of good sledding trays, either. Those were a staple in my college days. Natick Outdoor Store (just west down the road from Wellesley–on North Street about two blocks up from 135) has a lot of cheap saucers and innertubes but you can’t wait until the snow falls to get one, as they sell out early.

D is also a singer and pianist, and hopes to join some type of musical group, so I’ll remind her to bring her sleeping bag.

BofA will be a tough sell with my husband. He “divorced” them years ago due to lousy customer service and went to Sovereign (owned by Santander), another good bank with local branches, but I don’t know if there’s one on campus.

Our financial advisor also recommended getting a credit card for DD to help her start a credit rating, so we’re shopping around for one that doesn’t have ridiculous terms. Anybody else found one?

I don’t think there is any skiing to speak of in the immediate area, but it’s a day trip to Western Mass or New Hampshire. Keeping in mind that there is hardly any room for storage and the rooms can be extremely cramped and small, I would recommend that your D rent equipment on site if she does happen to go on a skiing/snowboarding trip during the semester. It might make more sense than having a seldom-used item taking up precious space.

Julialee - my D is a rising junior at Wellesley.

If your daughter is interested in skiing, she might want to join the Outing Club. They will plan outings for cross-country skiing and downhill skiing, and they’ll rent the appropriate equipment.

I would not bring a floor lamp – at most, maybe one of those clip-on or swing-arm lamps. I would not bring separate shoe storage – my daughter simply put her shoes in a big plastic tub under her bed and that worked well. Her freshman year, she shared 1 big closet with her roommate and separate shoe storage would have taken up too much room.

Both rooms she has lived in came with a full-length mirror. I wouldn’t bother with that either.

There are often kitchens on each floor that will have a microwave. My daughter isn’t a coffee drinker, so I don’t know if there are coffeemakers there, but unless she’s a REAL coffee junkie and has to have it, can’t she just get it when she goes down for breakfast?

Wellesley has nice rooms, but even so, it’s best to err on the side of underpacking. Best of luck to you and your daughter!
