Dorm Question

I was wondering about the temperature in the dorms especially the older ones. Do you recommend a heavier comforter or down in case it’s drafty? I’m trying to order her bedding and need to know if a regular bedding set would work or should I be looking into heavier down/down alternative? She’s coming from the South and I don’t want her to freeze. Thanks in advance for your input!

@Aussiemom I came from southern California - at the beginning of my first year, 60 degrees (F) was freezing! Near the summer, the dorms are hot and I recommend a fan if you’re on the third floor or above. I was on the first floor, and didn’t have an issue with the heat (also maybe because I am from a warm place). In the winter, the dorms are super heated. I brought a heated mattress pad and a comforter and ended up not using either. I recommend a happy medium - but know that the dorms do not get cold in the winter at all. Well, mine didn’t anyway.

Thank you so much!

@Aussiemom My advice: bring just what you need, get more later. I came with literally just a suitcase and a few other things. Meanwhile, on the first day, there were parents hauling their children and like five cars into the dorms. I ended up perfectly fine - I had everything I needed, and I went on the college Ikea/Target trips for things I was lacking.

I don’t suggest bringing just a suitcase, but I don’t think it’s necessary to try to bring every tiny thing you might need for college. Because also, you never know how much stuff her roommate will have, if she has a roommate (which is likely). I would suggest bringing what is necessary, then seeing what she needs after she gets there - who knows, maybe her roommate will have stuff (what you don’t really want is two roommates who both brought giant fans and minifridges).

Pack like she’s going to sleepaway camp, but with all technology necessities, and maybe a bit more. That’s my advice.

@Aussiemom Also, don’t order bedding quite yet - many of the dorms have twin beds, and some have twin XL. You can’t really know that yet! (Unless you’re okay with getting twin XL and having it possibly be a bit too long)

I ordered comforter, towels and mattress protector Twin xl (but could exchange for twin). We still need to get sheets. She is so excited, me too! It’s just a couple of weeks until move-in day!

@Aussiemom So close! Which dorm is she in? I can try to provide as much info about that dorm as possible
