Yes–you can group football tickets, however that has to be done before the season starts (i.e. before you know people from the dorm, hopefully he knows others already!) and you’ll probably get information about that soon. Also, you can sell your reserved seats and buy Block-O tickets if that is preferred; it’s super easy to do this via the Facebook marketplace (set location as Columbus).

Thanks OSULolz. How will reserved ticket holders be advised of the grouping option–OSU email? S goes to orientation July 9th, we are OOS and he only knows 2 others attending from his HS–one got block O south, one north! He may be okay with reserved, but would like to meet some people to hang with, he is pretty outgoing. If the grouping option email comes in a few weeks, maybe he will meet people at orientation in time to group with. Thanks for the FB marketplace tip.

How was graduation?! Will you remain in the Columbus area? Hopefully you continue to check in with your CC pals, you have been an invaluable resource to us all!! We wish you all the best!

If he is part of the Class of 2016 Facebook group, they are organizing a group for people (like myself) that have reserved seats but won’t know anyone until moving in.

JohnnyQ78. Great, thanks, he is, will make sure he checks it out. :)

Nova88- If it helps, I emailed the athletic tickets department (email was given through ticket window email) to add myself to the waiting list for Big Ten Block O North tickets. They called me today to confirm my spot on the list and will notify me if/when the package becomes available. Also, what part of New Jersey is your son coming from? I’m transferring from Middlesex County College in Edison.

OSUFisher Thanks for the info. S seems to think doing the group with his reserved tickets may be okay. He had wanted Block O South, but he is just happy he has tickets! We are in Hunterdon County, NJ. I actually grew up in Middlesex County, Small world. What year are you transferring in as, soph?

Lol, go blue

Nova88- If I decide to major in Risk Management I will be a sophomore. However, if I plan to major in Financial Mathematics I will be a junior. Good luck to you and your soon and yes it is a small world haha.

@OSULolz-ok, we made it through orientation! If you can think back to your freshman year (I know it will be different with the semester switch) but here is what S has scheduled:
Italian
Gen. Chemsitry (Bio-chem major)
Calculus
Freshman Survey (Atrs & Sciences)
Scholars Class (I can’t remember the exact name but they have to take it for the Scholars program)

This equals 15 units. Is that above/below/normal the amount of units a freshman should take 1st semester? I thonk they said 18 units would really be pushing it and 12 is considered full-time.

Also-no one has mentioned the Student Legal Services. I know you can opt out of them, but should we? We do not have a lawyer-never needed one (knock on wood). I am wondering what legal services the students would need?

Thank you so much for sharing your information.

@ Nova–Thanks! I’m glad I was able to help! Graduation was good but really hot…something like 90 degrees did not mesh well with my shirt/tie and long pants! I’ll actually be moving to Detroit for 4 months (an Ohio State sin, I know) for the first rotation of my new job, so I’m excited! I’ll try to keep answering this thread as well.

@NervousNellie1–that seems to be average for graduating on-time; I know that they say you must take 5 classes per semester for normal graduation. Also, I wouldn’t worry about taking more, especially during the first semester, so that he can get used to the University life. The survey class is basically a joke as well, so the load should be fairly bearable.

For Legal Services, I’m not sure about opting out but I also don’t know the per semester cost (However make sure to opt out of health insurance, as I’ve mentioned before!). It may be useful because they can help for things such as looking over apartment lease contacts and other off-campus housing disputes.

Hi! I am an international transfer student who applied for campus housing. Move-in date is August 19. I would like to ask when should I sign up for check-in and orientation. From the e-mail it is stated that it takes about 5-7 days to complete the process, and I can choose any date from July 30 to August 15. I would most probably stay in the temporary housing available for students who arrive before move-in date.

My question is, should I choose to do my check-in and orientation earlier so it won’t be too much of a rush. And if I finish early, will there be things to do around campus? I don’t want to just bum around as I am coming to OSU alone. Are there opportunities to meet new people if I come at say August 6?

Thank you in advance for your help!

OSULolz, congrats to you on graduation and your new job (even if it starts in that state up north LOL). I’m sure you are well prepared and great things lie ahead for you! Your CC friends know you will make the Buckeyes proud!! :)

S graduates HS this week and it’s going to be 95 degrees here that day, so he’ll be in the same spot you were in for OSU graduation…shirt, tie, cap and gown, on a turf football field–sizzling!!

Thanks so much!

And that’s crazy, bring water!

OSULolz–My son just finished his freshman year and lived at Lincoln House. He and 2 friends have an apartment at University Village, but it’s really expensive! As much as the dorms! More even, without food plan.

Have you any suggestions about cheaper housing that is within walking/campus bus distance?

Well, for this upcoming school year, it’s a bit late…but if you’re referring to next year, there are plenty of options! Especially for 3 people, it should be easily under $500 per month. Here’s a good resource for apartment searching within Columbus [Off-Campus Housing : offcampus.osu.edu](http://offcampus.osu.edu/off-campus-housing/) …it is best to start in the FALL (i.e. as soon as possible), because after winter break the good deals become scarce. Also, there are plenty of websites, signs, etc. that can help lead to a good apartment deal.

I personally lived in Harrison apartments that is located on Lane Ave. across from the FCOB / Drackett Tower. I think rent went up this year, and it was already pretty pricey, but rent was $580 per person with all utilities except for internet included.

Hope that helped!

OSULolz.

Can you tell us more about Harrison Apartments? Is the rent you estimated for a 2BR, 3BR, etc? I checked out their website and it looks like a major renovation is taking place there. Of course, as always, the pictures look very nice, but are the apartments REALLY that nice? Is parking availability an issue there, is there a fee for parking?

For those of us with freshman, when would be the best time to grab an apartment in Harrison for sophomore year? Do most of the students then stay there through the summer as well? Are there many opportunities to find jobs in Columbus through the summer months? Even between freshman and sophomore year? My S is pre-business, so he would actually consider looking for an office job/internship over the summer. In your experience, how hard is it for Fisher to assist him in finding a summer position through job fairs, etc.?

Thanks, as always!! :)

Yes, thanks for the info, OSU! Go Bucks! (BSN '84)

Wow this thread has been so helpful. Thanks! I’m going to the honors/scholars exploration day soon!

How difficult is it to be accepted into the Honors program? I’m ranked 1 in my class(going into senior year), with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, plus I’m in a few clubs etc.

Also, how hard is it to maintain a high gpa at OSU? Med schools look at GPA pretty closely I hear. Are there a lot of professors that hate giving out As?

@Nova:

There are some major renovations at Harrison this year…we got lucky and got to enjoy them without having to pay the price increases. There are definitely better deals in terms of just price, but one thing that I liked about Harrison is that everything inside was very NICE and CLEAN. Right before we moved in, the apartments got new kitchen cabinets, refrigerators, dishwashers, and stoves. The kitchen floor, bathroom floor, and blinds were replaced during the year. The apartments may be a bit smaller than others, but the quality over quantity was definitely worth it for me. I did a 3-person apartment; one room is substantially bigger than the other two. Parking was no issue; I think it was $60 per quarter for parking. Another thing was that since electricity/water/air/gas/cable was included, we didn’t have to be cheap about utilities. Our apartment was always at a comfortable 70-72 degrees. Let me know if you want more specific details about
Harrison.

For apartment searching, it is definitely best to do it in the fall, before Thanksgiving if possible to get the best deals. Harrison was a large building so we were okay for renting until at least January, but if looking elsewhere, sooner is better. I would also advise trying to be near the business school (ex. Norwich, Northwood, Harrison was very close) if possible.

It may be harder to find solid business internships before Sophomore year just because there is no solid business course experience yet. If he has background experience, it may be easier, but I do not believe that he can use Fisher Connect, the FCOB career services website used to find jobs/internships as a freshman. Once you become QUIC (note: [Fisher College of Business | Office of Career Management](http://www.cob.ohio-state.edu/offices/career-management/) ) the career services are fantastic.

However, there are some Ohio State jobs that I know of offered over the summer. I worked as an Orientation Housing Assistant (OHA) in Summer 2010 which was a fantastic experience, I can go into more detail if you would like. Here are some other jobs through Ohio State housing/dining services (though not just for summer).
@ Vanessa

With your GPA and class rank, you should be fine. When I joined Honors in 2008, we were required to be Top 10% (which you obviously are) and have an ACT 30 minimum. I’m not sure if those standards have changed, but I doubt you will have any trouble getting into Honors.

In terms of GPA, it really depends on what courses you take and what teachers you have. Going into med school, you will probably be in a lot of chem/bio classes which are historically harder, but the med school will also surely take that into account. My high school vs. college GPA was very similar (I got an Ops Management degree / econ minor), so if you have the same work ethic, I would not worry.

I’ve read that the professors are pretty liberally-biased and like to spoon feed students things such as global warming and going green, for example. Is that over-exaggerated?
