Ask an OSU Senior

Also, in your experience, how would you rate the academic advisers?

Sorry for the double post lol. Just realized that you can edit messages.

OSULolz Thanks, as always, for the reply!

Re: Harrison…is the area relatively safe, in terms of walking back and forth to Fisher and Main Campus from Harrison during the day/evening? S and I will be on campus the week of July 9th, it may make sense to stop by and see Harrison while we are in town, so we have a sense of the building and area (since we are OOS, our trips to campus to visit S will be minimal, this may be our best chance to get a sense of off campus options).

Thanks for the honesty about internships/jobs before the end of soph year, just want S to be grounded in reality there. S is in the R-Lead and OWL program this year, so maybe the OHA role could be a fit for S too.

Local area question–we will be arriving on campus in August for R-Lead directly from a family vacation in SC, thus shipping as much as possible ahead of our arrival to S’s dorm. We plan to order whatever we can from Bed Bath and Beyond and/or Target and having shipped to store locations in Columbus area for us to pick up when we arrive. Since S is moving in early, campus and area will not be as crazy as it would be on official move in weekend. Any experience with shipping in terms of knowing other out of state students while you were at OSU to do so, and any good/bad store locations or shipping tips?

Thanks again!!

The Target at Lennox Center is close and nice. If you are getting there early you could just shop there when you arrive. It should be pretty well stocked.

RMGsmom–thanks for the Target tip!!! :)

I think that all colleges have more liberal tendencies because that’s what younger people tend to be. As a republican, it’s a bit annoying during election season…but really it’s from both sides. Besides a class on global warming that I took, I really didn’t feel that teachers forced their views, conservative or liberal, on us. So yes, over-exaggerated.

At FCOB, I thought the advisers were great. There were a lot of them (20ish?) and it was easy to do walk ins or schedule an appointment. I usually emailed my adviser and she usually responded within 1-3 days. My friend in engineering had a literal opposite experience. Only one adviser for his department (mech-e) and she almost never responded to any emails.

Harrison is right across from the JO North, so it’s right off campus. Very safe and very well lit. Besides living in a dorm, it’s the closest option for walking to Fisher. It’s also right next to a gas station / Subway, so that was pretty convenient. If price is a high influence, I would definitely check out some other options as well, however.

For stores, Target is definitely a great option. There is a Walmart about 15min away that may be another good option…I would avoid buying much at the B&N on High, it’s pretty expensive. I’m from NE Ohio myself, so I always just drove an SUV load down, I don’t have much personal experience with the shipping aspect.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what do you guys think of buying things from OSU’s dorm-supply list that the school mails to you? (I’m talking about the one where it’s stated that “regular sheets won’t fit our beds.”) It seems to me like it’s just a cheap tactic to try and get the students to spend more money, but I’m not entirely sure…

Pretty much every college uses things such as ‘twin XL’ mattresses, so it’s very standard in stores. Go to any store with a college section (Walmart, Target, etc) to get these, I would not get them from the dorm-supply list. There is probably a smaller selection and higher price. You can usually get good bundle deals from places like Target too (comforter, sheets, pillowcase, etc)

I have a few questions about becoming an Office Assistant… When is the best time to apply? Do you have to have Work Study to be hired? Is it hard to get this job? What are the hours and pay like?

1) Best time to apply is AS SOON AS SCHOOL STARTS. Sooner the better, just have your student ask the front desk at their dorm. Also, apply to more than one dorm, you DON’T have to live there to work there. I worked 3 years at a dorm next door

2) You do not have to be work study to be hired

3) It’s not hard, just come across as friendly, involved, and interested in OSU in the interview. I worked at NSA Complex where they hired 50 of us, so the odds were in your favor.

4) Hours are minimum 10 per week, max 30. I usually worked 18-22, more if I could. Very easy to take and give away shifts.

5) Minimum wage. Automatic $0.25 per hour raise every 400 hours. I worked there 2.5 years so eventually it added up.

May have to work over Christmas break, weekends, etc. That’s why I loved NSA complex…more people to take your shifts!

Anyone know if the numbers appearing on the housing contract translate to specific dorm? Example 0318-1. If you look at the housing website at each dorm, there are none that start with a zero, but two that have a room number 318. Some speculate the translation is room 318, "1"meaning one of a double room, and if one of the dorms with that number were on your housing request form, or the campus you requested, such as South, you can back into your dorm. Scoop is housing notices are coming out next week, just curious if the speculation has any merit. Thanks!

It at least doesn’t correlate to a building code : [Campus Map - The Ohio State University](<a href=“Home | The Ohio State University”>Building Index - Campus Map - The Ohio State University)

Thanks OSULolz, we tried that too! Lol

Do you have any idea how Canfield Hall is?

Nova: my daughter just received her housing info today. She had 3 after her room number and that means she is in a triple. However, there is no 3rd roommate assigned so she is hoping it stays that way. lol. Either way, she is in the location she wanted and a dorm with a/c

Mspearl, glad your D got the dorm she wanted, so did my S! Good news for both! The logic held true, we found two dorms with his contract room number, his was the one he asked for. We are in Columbus now, orientation tomorrow. Wish us luck! :)

@Kumquat94:

I have never been in Canfield, although I assume it to be typical South Campus dorms…It is in a great location for being VERY close to Marketplace (meal swipe place on S Campus).

I was in Siebert freshman year (2008) which is attached to Canfield, and I thought location wise it was great. Fairly close to the South campus gateway, Marketplace, Union, Mirror Lake, Catfish Biffs (best pizza ever), etc.

As a business major, is the South campus a good location or should I try to switch with someone on North?

Son got a double in Lincoln. I think he is quite pleased. A couple of questions though: IS a bike recommended since I assume Lincoln is a little ways from most things? If so, is there a storage facility in Lincoln? Lastly, since the restroom will be shared by eight, what is the cleaning situation?

Thanks as always, it is most appreciated.

Nova- good luck!

I just found out I’ll be in a quad in Morrill Tower. Any insight on how that is going to be? I read how the rooms are all the same size, so the quad is going to get half as much space as the doubles, so how cramped am I going to be? Is there room for a TV or anything like that in the room itself, or should I be dependent on the common area? Also, how is it going to work without any kitchens at all in the hall?
