Ask current Penn students anything!

hey focus08! You might want to check out the other waitlist discussion here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1481039-waitlisted.html

I am currently a freshman who got off the waitlist last year. Move-in day was the first time I set foot on Penn’s campus -or in Philadelphia in general! I never visted Penn before then so I doubt it will help you get off the waitlist.

As for dorm, I’m currently living in a high rise in a residential program! I would definitely apply to residential programs as it increases your chances of getting the housing you want. It was my second choice.

Hey neorobie,

Thanks for your answer, it was really helpful. Is the residential program FreshEx?

I also had a few more questions, sorry to bother you with them! :P

Is it possible to take courses in a different school? Like a student of CAS taking courses in Wharton and SEAS?

Is it very difficult to switch into SEAS from CAS? I might want to do that!

Thanks again!

focus:

It is not only possible but encouraged to take courses across schools. Many students take courses in the College and Wharton, regardless of what school they are in, and it is actually required for all undergrads to take at least a few College courses. As a CAS student, you are permitted to take as many courses as you want in whichever school you want, but you will only be able to count four non-College courses toward your graduation requirements. There is plenty of inter-disciplinary opportunity at Penn, whether it is dual degree programs, inter-school minor programs, or even individual courses identified as College and Wharton courses.

Last I heard, switching from SEAS to CAS requires a 3.0 GPA. I know of plenty of people - from Wharton and Engineering - who decided to transfer to the College. I know plenty of other people who decided to do a dual degree. It is much easier to enter into a dual degree program with the College if you started in Wharton/SEAS as opposed to the other way around: requirements for SEAS and Wharton are set up with four sequential years of studies in mind, while requirements for the College are set up in more of a free way.

focus08: nah it is East Asia -and you don’t have to be East Asian to apply. I think FreshEx had an earlier deadline as I wanted to apply but I don’t think I was able to if I recall correctly.

Hi, I’m a current high school Senior and just found out a few days ago of my acceptance to UPenn! Does anyone have any familiarity with the reputation of their math department? I really want to major in math or possibly do a dual major in math and physics and minor in Philosophy.

^ As I posted in your other thread, Penn’s Math Department is generally ranked among the top 20 or so in the country.

For example:

[Best Mathematics Programs | Top Math Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/mathematics-rankings?int=grad-featured-science)

Hi! CAS '17!

Does anybody know if the health and societies major is good for someone who’s not pre-med? It looks really interesting but I don’t know what it would be useful for after graduation.

I was also wondering if someone could give me a short description of each of the sororities and frats (or the most popular) on campus. I have seen a few old threads that talk about this but would love an updated version. Thanks!

Thanks Chris, that really helped!

I know that Wharton freshman usually take Management 100, Econ 010, a math course, a writing seminar, and a language course in the fall, but what do they take if they have placed out of a language?

@pennstudent227 The language requirement is filled so a language isn’t necessary. The other class can be one for your major/minor, fills requirements, etc.

Can you apply to Wharton for Early Decision and to CAS for Regular Decision?

How big of a deal is the Penn band? Are they considered “cool” on campus?

Only if you apply to Wharton as part of a dual-degree program with CAS (e.g., Huntsman), in which case you can designate CAS on your application as your backup single school for the RD round. But if you’re applying to a single school and NOT a dual-degree program, you cannot change schools between the ED and RD rounds.

I’d say they’re pretty cool. I know a few members and they have tons of fun with it, always recruiting new members.

What is the hookup culture like at Penn?

I know that Penn is a smoke-free campus but does that mean there are no areas designated for smokers?

Sorry, if the questions are repeated at other thread. I think this is a better to post:

Does Philly have many internship opportunity? Will UPenn students stay at Philly in summer?

As far as I can tell, Penn is NOT a smoke-free campus. I wish it was!

Do non-local students fly home for Thanksgiving? What is the atmosphere in the dorms like if you stay? During the December holiday, do kids return to campus in early Jan for programs or stay on holiday until 1/14?

“Officially”, it is.
So do you mean that the policy isn’t enforced properly and people still smoke freely on campus?
