Ask current Penn students anything!

I see people smoke occasionally outside the quad.

Also, as a current freshman this may seem a bit awkward to ask but does anyone have any information on the NROTC here and how much time it takes up?

I’d like to know that as well.

In the likely case that I don’t get off the wait list, I might try to transfer to Penn. Do/can transfer’s pledge frats? Are you disadvantaged socially or in any other way as a transfer?

I have a few friends in the band, but I wouldn’t say there’s any huge stigmas associated with it on campus. They seem to be pretty involved with hanging out with each other, partying, etc, so if you want to be in the band I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t be happy with it at Penn.

Hookup culture is nice and diverse, you can find a niche that you’re comfortable with and in general won’t really be judged for what you believe in. If you’re into Greek Life, a lot of people there are into the one night stand kind of culture. But even then some have boyfriends/girlfriends, care more about actual relationships, etc. Having a hookup buddy that you’re not in a real relationship with isn’t uncommon either. Penn is really too diverse and big a campus to have any single defined hookup culture.

I’m surprised to hear it’s officially smoke-free… It’s not a topic that interests me but I often see people smoking outside buildings or on streets, and I haven’t heard of anyone getting in trouble for it. At the same time, I’m not into smoking at all, and despise secondhand smoke, and have not found the occasional smokers to be at all annoying or bothersome.

I would say most go home for Thanksgiving, save for internationals or those who live on the other side of the US. I’m a freshman and I went home, so I don’t know exactly what it’s like to stay, but a few of my friends who stayed because pretty close with each other since there was nothing to do but hang out with the few people remaining. It doesn’t seem too bad to stay.

What do you mean by returning for programs after winter break? I suppose some clubs or teams might start up before classes start, but most people return right as classes begin.

Yes, Penn and Philly have a decent amount of internship opportunities. If you’re into science research, you’re bound to find something within Penn. Philadelphia itself seems decent with providing other kinds of internship opportunities, though a lot of business students end up spending summers in New York or Boston as well. Maybe California for tech people. Generally it seems a bit difficult for internationals to find internships, but that would be the case at any US university.

I can’t speak much on this since I’m not a transfer nor do I really know any transfers, but I don’t think you would have too many problems. I ran into some transfers when rushing frats, and there’s a fair amount of sophomores in general who rush, so that shouldn’t be a problem for you. I imagine it might be a little socially awkward in the beginning, since, as far as I gather from upperclassmen, your best friends end up being your freshman year hallmates and also those you meet through extracurriculars. But that would right itself after some time.

My question is actually stats related. I am from Canada. My grades in freshman and sophomore are around 75s due to some crappy family issues. I am currently a junior and will be a senior after the summer. My current grades is around 90 right now, wishing to raise that up to a 95 in my senior year, and I’m also aiming to score 2200+ on my SATI. (I’ve done a lot of sets of practice exams, and I scored pretty high on those) I know I am capable to ahieve greater goals, it’s just the family issues had a heavy influence in my life. That’s that.

Wharton is my dream school and I am looking for every possible chance to boost up my grades and maximize my chances. You may find me sound like a dreamer, but at this point, I will try my best to do whatever it takes to reach or even go beyond my potential and step out of my comfort zone.

Is there any suggestions that you’d like to give, or tips? I will definitely have back up schools but I will try for Wharton nonetheless.

Thank you so much for your time.

Hi everyone! I’m actually international student with low income <20k anually. I think about applying to ED to UPenn and RD to some universities. If I wouldn’t like fin aid which UPenn offered, but other university would offer full tuition/more fin aid may I refuse of UPenn? Or I wouldn’t able to refuse?

^ You are allowed to decline an ED offer if the financial aid award is insufficient (and you can also appeal Penn’s financial aid offer to see if Penn will match or approach the offers of other schools).

Do you know the student transfer to Penn form CC with Associate degree ? will it be easier if the student finish his associate degree then apply the transfer ?thanks

Just out of curiosity… can College students take MGMT 100? if so, is it limited to fall or spring? this past year I’ve been going to all the events the Whartonites have been throwing as part of their projects and it seems very interesting!

Are all the houses in the quad connected? I got a room in the first floor of Ware, does that mean if I walk down the hall I can get to Riepe or Fisher or are there walls stopping me?

There’s a wall between Class of '28 and the adjoining hall in Fisher (although it does connect to Speakman in Ware). Otherwise, I’m almost positive you can walk the entire Quad without needing to go outdoors. You can definitely hit both Riepe and Fisher from Ware.

What is the best part about going to Penn?

Sorry if this is an obvious question but do Penn’s supplemental essays change year to year? If so, when will this year’s be released? I appreciate any help (:

^ For the last several years, Penn’s supplemental essay(s) have been changing year to year. Here’s the new supplemental essay prompt for the upcoming admissions cycle (Class of 2018):

Interesting that’s it’s only one essay now. Thanks for the help!

I’m pretty sure it’s been one essay for a few years now. At least, it was when I applied two years ago, and I think it was last year

With an optional short essay

Oh I thought there was usually one with a Ben Franklin quote?

Last year there was a short answer (300 word limit) that asked how you would engage at Penn based on one of Penn’s four school you would be enrolled in. Then there was an essay (300-500 words) that was the Ben Franklin quote.

Do you have any recommendations for moderately priced hotels in the area? Making an extended weekend trip from the DC area to visit Penn and to take in the sites of Philly. I would prefer a place that we can bring our dog, I hate leaving him at home.

Around Penn your options are pretty much the Sheraton and Hilton Inn at Penn. The Sheraton allows dogs though I believe
