Ask Me About Syracuse MT

Thank you, onstage! A big plus was the relationship with the professional theater, but I just remembered not really liking the area, but hey, I went to school in a not so nice area of DC and survived. It’s so different when it’s YOUR child! :-)

The area is fine. My D is a junior now and luckily has had no issues. The bussing is good and like Onstage said lots of kids have cars.

Can you double major with MT?

Is there realistically time to have a minor outside of the field while being in the BFA MT program? Perhaps having a minor in communications, for example?

What opportunities do students have other than mainstage productions? (i.e. student directed shows, small scale productions, cabarets, childrens theatre, etc) And if there is anything else, would freshman be able to participate?

What classes do Syracuse offer that are unique to its own program?

Are there any internships offered?

How many students leave the school already signed with an agent or have a job from showcases or anything else?

Here are two unique syracuse elements.

  1. The Tepper Semester - seniors can spend 2nd semester of senior year living in NYC and getting industry exposure
  2. Sorkin Week - every year Aaron Sorkin (alum) takes a group (all expenses paid) out to LA for exposure there.
I believe these opportunities are mutually exclusive

How selective is SU with prescreens? How do they decide who gets to audition in person?

Does anyone know how important grades are? For example, NYU says it’s 50% grades and 50% audition? CMU Says mainly audition! What is it for Syracuse?

I believe you first have to have a high enough score on your MT audition to be considered for the program, and then admissions receives all of the contenders and only accepts people who academically qualify for the school.

@musicmama123 We just visited this week. The admissions counselor said talent is considered more than academics. They did not say it exactly in the way CMU said it (we’ve been there already too), but academics doesn’t seem like the primary factor.
