Ask me questions about Northwestern!

er... bump?

That depends- does your family income warrant huge scholarships? I've seen the financial aid cut both ways- the people I've talked to who's families actually needed a solid chunk (mine included) have generally been very happy, whereas the people who think they need a chunk of aid, but still manage to wear designer clothes (purchased retail) and go out to Peter Miller's on a regular basis have been known to complain. They met 100% of my FAFSA calculated need.

My mom makes a very decent salary but refuses to pay over 10k per year for school. (Needless to say, with Northwestern's lack of merit aid, this makes me a bit nervous.)

Not that I don't have other schools on my list. But still.

What are the best work study jobs for getting your homework done on the job?

Do I need a really big backpack? I had a hell of a time last time because I had to carry around so many books all the time.

I use a medium sized tim-buk-tu laptop messenger, and find its heavy but sufficiently large. It depends what sort of classes you're taking, how many you have each day, and where you live on campus. Some people don't carry backpacks at all/ carry satchels. Some have huge backpacks. Somewhere between the two is generally the average.

And the best work study jobs, from what I hear, are in the library, though many department jobs are great. Personally I love my job because my bosses are wonderful, the faculty I get to know are great, and I get tons of delicious catering regularly. But I have a pretty special job. The pay rate isn't great though.

Speaking of jobs, is it difficult to get an on-campus job if you do not have work study? Are there a lot of options as far as on-campus jobs?

I also use a medium timbuk2 bag, though its the laptop version. Yes it gets heavy, but i can easily fit a large notebook and large textbook in it. I assume if you get the regular messenger version w/o the padded laptop pocket you can fit a bit more also.

No, I have the laptop version too. I just dont usually keep a laptop in it, and I pack it really full.

Would it make much of a difference if I only took 2 SAT IIs instead of 3?

Do they ask for three?

I thought they didn't even require SAT II's(?). Even if they do, taking 3 instead of 2 won't drastically affect your application, unless you bomb it of course. If your 2 SAT II's are already strong, a 3rd one isn't really necessary, unless you plan on majoring in that field or something.

I think Northwestern recommends you take 3. I did pretty well on the two I did take and I dont want to push my luck, especially considering that the third would have to be Lit, and no, I plan on majoring in Econ or Chem.

Thanks for your replies. :)

Is Allison a good dorm for a junior transfer for all its social activity? IE, how many fresh/soph/jr/sr? What about Foster-Walker's social activity? Kemper, upperclassmen dorms, any other? I'm looking for social activity w/o only-freshman dorms.

If anyone here has previously transferred to Northwestern, do you know if they make a practice of differentiating between freshmen and transfer students? I am wondering because I am a transfer, but I keep getting letters that say "welcome to the class of 2012".

Anyone think this is an error or they just send all of the same material to new students?

ohhradio, Naperville, IL here. I got the same material. What housing did you apply to? I'm thinking of changing mine if I can.

As in, what were my choices of housing? I believe it was Allison first, then Foster Walker... I know North and south quads were there as well as Kemper, but I'm not sure of the order of those.

Are you a transfer as well?

I am a transfer, and I'll probably email them to change my housing if it's not too late.

What did you originally select? And did you recently get a book in the mail?

I chose Foster-Walker as number one, but heard some bad things. Not sure what book you mean. My AIM's rift117 if you want to talk more.
