Odd. I've always been told by Residential Life that you should just put in the address--and I work in ResLife. Regardless, definitely shouldn't put "Northwestern University" in the address.

maybe it is just the "northwestern university" part that delays it. My mistake, sorry!--can't figure out how to edit my original post.

I was told by someone in res life just to put as such (using Allison as an example):

Name
1820 Chicago Avenue, Room XXX
Evanston, IL 60208

No mention of Allison Hall or Northwestern University.
FWIW, that's how I did it for my 4 years here - South MidQuads, Allison and 2 years in a sorority. The sorority address was simply:

Name
XXX University Place
Evanston, IL 60208

No mention of the sorority name.

i have a cousin that went to Northwestern...is that a big bonus??? thanks!

While bored at my internship this summer, I came across this forum and had fun reading all of the posts. I just finished undergrad at NU with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing & Design Engineering. I'm going back this year to complete a masters in Engineering Design & Innovation. I lived in the Slivka Residential College of Science & Engineering for all 4 years of undergrad on north campus. I'm living in an apartment off campus this year. I'm also in a sorority (though now I have alum status). If anyone has questions I might be able to answer, feel free to email me at eaa@u.northwestern.edu or facebook me.

Congrats to all the incoming freshman. I've absolutely LOVED Northwestern so far!!!

Can someone who has lived in Allison please tell us what "extra" things to bring? How much space for under the bed? Should we bring one of those things you can hang from the closet to give you more space? Is there a door anywhere (closet?) to hang "over the door" things? Should we bring "milk crate"cubes to create room for extra stuff? Where do you put the printer? I know you can't "loft" the bed but can you use those risers? Is there a place for refrigerator rentals? Do people bring TVs? (I thought I had read something about getting TV on your laptop?????) HELP!

You can bring a TV if you want, but the best you will be able to do is hook your laptop up to the TV with an s-video cable so whatever's on your screen will show up on the TV. Then you can "watch TV" but it's still just coming through your laptop (that's how NUTV works, you can only watch it streaming online). TVs are a necessity for videogames though, if you care about that.

I don't understand -- you can't watch TV shows on an actual TV?

Dorm rooms dont get cable- so you could, but only if your TV is equipped with an old school antenna, or you have some means of moving TV signal from your computer to the TV.

NU streams a select number of channels (voted on by the student body, and generally people are very happy with that selection) straight to your computer.

Ok...so no TV! Thanks for that tip! How about the other questions for Allison Dorms?

All I can say is that Allison's rooms are massive, and I don't know of space being a major problem for anyone who lived there.

random question: if NU doesn't have cable in the dorms, does anyone know why there was a Cable survey before viewing the housing contract?

That was for what channels you will get on NUTV, if I am understanding you correctly.

Yeah, that was for NUTV.

I'll pose this one again--Does one have any chance of getting an on campus job if he/she does not have work study? Is this limited to the food establishments at NU?

I know there is a job fair in the fall, but I just want to know a current student's take on this. Also, current students: where have you found that non-work study students usually get jobs? I'm not talking about an internship at this point, just a small job to make some money during the year. Thanks!

Actually, since they got rid of security monitors, some of the best jobs on campus are non-work study. Becoming a CA, although there are certain sacrifices involved, means free room and board (applications for that are in December). Also, working for SafeRide is a GREAT job. For that, you drive a Prius around Evanston as a free taxi service for NU students, from about 8pm till 3am (with breaks). Starting pay for SafeRide is $10/hr on weekdays, 11/hr on weekends. You must have had your driver's license for 2 years to work as a driver.

There are other jobs on campus that don't require work study, but those are definitely two of the better ones, and the ones that I'm most familiar with.

How is the undergrad business program at Northwestern?

cough what undergrad business program?

You'll find if you look at the forum that northwestern only offers business certificates for undergrads.

@BZ-B:

If you get into Medill, but decide you don't want to do journalism, how easy is it to transfer to Weinberg? I heard of someone who transferred from W to M.

Also, what is the Medill coursework like? Is it all journalism stuff?

thanks so much!
