As stated. I currently go to Illinois & would love to answer any questions you have. About classes, community, dorms, internships, greek life, general campus, etc etc.
(As long as it is not chancing you for cs or engineering, or any department really lol)
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Anyone is free to ask or answer questions in this thread.
Hi, Im a current grad student here (and actually just finished my undergrad here in CS and Physics this year.)
I was originally accepted as a CS major, and I came here because the CS program is amazing and a huge value as an in-state student, relative to other universities. The campus and proximity to home, a 2.5+45min hour train ride away, was a pretty big plus.
I can also answer some questions about either the CS or Engineering Physics programs, grad school (though my experience will probably be different than most), or student life at UIUC.
HI, I have a question on how DGS work. I applied for Econometrics major but got admitted to Undeclared to DGS. How does the process works for declaring a major. Can I do that right away in freshman year or are there certain requirements? Also can i get into my original major?
Hi, i just had a question about admissions, If you are applying to UIUC CS Major, does it have to be by Nov 1 early action deadline or I can apply for regular decision as well ? My school is telling me it should have been sent by Nov 1.
Hi there! What at first made me decide to go to Illinois was the generous financial aid and scholarship package I was offered. It was my most cost-effective decision by far, and I have several family members who are alumni.
However, going into my 4th semester here, I’ve learned about how much the school has to offer. I seriously thrive on a large campus. I’ve made so many friends from different backgrounds with different beliefs. I’ve joined a sorority on campus, where I’ve found a great support system. While hype around our sports teams has been low, they’ve really started winning a lot this year, which ads to the big10 campus-community feel. Champaign-Urbana is a classic college town, and I love it. There’s a mixture of big/small classes, and opportunities to get involved in almost every field/major/interest/hobby. Look up images of quad day here, its seriously insane how many clubs there are!
In my major, journalism, I’ve had professors who have worked for the wall street journal, or won pulitzer prizes. I really feel like I absolutely made the right choice coming to Illinois, for these reasons and more.
Hopefully that helped a little bit! If you have any more questions let me know!
Hi! From what the DGS website says about declaring a major, you have to declare by the start of junior year. However, I know multiple friends who declared right after their freshman year. I’m not sure if you will be able to apply to switch right away freshman year, you might have to ask someone in the advising department. However, I think it would be highly unlikely.
Just because you were chosen for different major doesn’t mean you can’t switch into your major later on. It is definitely possible. However, transferring to a specific major is not guaranteed.
That’s not true! While most people applying for competitive majors like CS and engineering use early action, you can still apply regular decision! I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the regular decision deadline is January 5. You (or your school) may have begun an early action application, which may be the cause of the mixup?
Thanks, I just wanted to clarify this before I submitted my RD application. I missed the EA deadline. I am an international student and very keen to apply for CS major.
Thank you, Very informational. I guess switching to any engineering or business major might be very hard. I am looking into LAS major of Econometrics but seems to be possible. I emailed the admission office to get more info on what is required to declare that particular major.
UIUC site says that if you are admitted into your second choice major but not first - you are being considered as in waitlist for first choice (https://www.admissions.illinois.edu/FAQ/admitted-freshman#Eight) - do you know of anyone getting into a different major/college through waitlist while admitted into the second choice. Just wondering if this is always the case or a recent change.
This is more specific to LAS - if a candidate is admitted into Physics - is it difficult to change the major to Physics+CS? (or CS+X as how they call it). This is not transferring into CS/College of Engineering but rather change the major to CS+X in LAS - not sure how difficult it is.
Hello! Thank you for helping us. I just got accepted to Grainger College of Engineering for systems design and engineering. I have a question about housing as an undergrad. Is the Ikenberry Commons north and south too far for engineering? I know ISR is the standard engineering hall but my dad lived there when he went to UofI and doesn’t have much nice to say about ISR. I would really like a place with air conditioning and distance to engineering classes is a big factor too. Thank you
Hi, I missed the deadline for Early Action for CS Major, would applying for CS in regular decision be a wasteful effort? would they have filled up all the seats by now ?
I don’t think you necessarily wasted time. I remember there are always some people who get in to CS on the RD round. Albeit, let me state the obvious, CS is probably even more of a “Hunger Games” RD than in EA round.
Thank you, Very informational. I guess switching to any engineering or business major might be very hard. I am looking into LAS major of Econometrics but seems to be possible. I emailed the admission office to get more info on what is required to declare that particular major.
No Problem! Engineering is typically very hard to switch into, even for those in the Pre-Engineering major. On the other hand, I know multiple people who were undeclared who switched into business. It’s competitive, but not nearly as competitive as engineering or CS. As far as Econometrics specifically, I’m not sure. LAS has very easy majors to transfer into, and difficult majors (ie: biology/premed majors).
I'm not sure if this is newer or more recent. I applied RD, and they said that if you weren't accepted into first choice, that there simply wasn't enough room for you in that major. However, the case may be different since you applied EA. They may reconsider you when they go through the RD applications. You may want to email their admissions department to make sure. I haven't heard of anyone getting accepted into their first choice before coming to school. However, I do know people who applied and were accepted to transfer into their first choice after their freshman year.
No matter the college, CS is pretty competitive. This is because you are essentially still taking a lot of the same classes and using the same resources as CS students. There is a high demand for the CS + majors (even CS + advertising is competitive now). However, if you are already in LAS, I would think you would have a better shot at transferring in.
(Anyone with more knowledge on the CS + majors is welcome to chip in!)
Googling “UIUC continued letter of interest” pulls up a wait-list FAQ (which is applicable to deferred students. They state that no additional materials will be accepted. (Even senior year grades).
Generally, students are able to apply for a double major or dual-major once they enroll and start classes at UIUC. However, there may be a different process entirely with CS. You should email admissions and they will lead you in the right direction.
(I know many students are hesitant about emailing the admissions department, but they do a lot more than just read through applications. They have specific people designated to answer questions from students. Additionally, they want you to go here, so they’ll be really nice about it, even if they have to lead you to another department.)
