Ask Questions about Lawrenceville

Competitive sports - how competitive are sports at Lawrenceville? Soccer? Ice Hockey? Lacrosse? how much experience does one need to make jv or varsity teams as a freshman?

Freshmen have their own team for soccer, and I think they have their own hockey and lacrosse teams. Getting into JV and varsity is tough, teams are really competitive.

Why is the old headmaster leaving? What do you think of the new one?

Can you tell me a bit about the culture of the wrestling and lacrosse teams? My son was accepted, he is not super social and tends to make most of his plans with boys from his sports teams. At his current private day school the wrestling team is filled with super smart, motivated students. I think he is looking for more of the same strong team feeling.

How many courses did you take during the freshman year? Do the courses meet daily? Thanks.

I think the old headmaster just decided it was time to step down. She’s been here for a long time. The new headmaster looks great though, seems to want to be more involved with student life than the last one did. He’s also got a fantastic mustache.

I’m not particularly familiar with lacrosse or wrestling, but the wrestling team does have a lot of the same qualities your day school seems to have now. And even if he isn’t super social, he’ll get to know the freshmen very well, as they’re essentially isolated off from the rest of the school.

I didn’t attend freshman year, but freshmen take six courses, and they meet according to our schedule, which is really complicated. Classes generally meet four times a week though.

Differences and pros/cons with Calc AB and BC at Lville?

I think I vaguely remember from last year’s thread that you’re allowed to turn in an organized folder for a grade? Am I right?

Hi, my daughter will be attending this fall as a boarding 2nd former. Do you know when exams are over on Nov 20? How do kids get to Newark Airport?

@A08842 Calc BC moves at a much faster pace than Calc AB. For example, Calc BC is finished with all 10 chapters of the Calc book now, and we are reviewing for the AP. I think Calc AB got to around chapter 6/7.

Also, I’ll clarify about the binder. There is one teacher for PreCalc BC who allows an organized binder for a 100% test grade and additionally drops your lowest test grade… For Calc BC, there is one teacher who allows an organized binder for half a test grade. However, there are also teachers who do not do this, so it depends on your teacher.

@CA20161 Morning exams go from 9am-11am and afternoon exams go from 2pm -4pm. You will have to wait and see whether your daughter is taking a class that has an afternoon exam on Nov. 20.

Lawrenceville provides buses to get kids to Newark.

@iAmMe77 How many new juniors come in? Also, is the Harkness method used in all classrooms?

@ajsmiles12 There aren’t really that many new juniors that enter… I’d say it hasn’t been more than 7 new juniors while I’ve been at lville (sometimes as low as 1 new junior in a particularly over enrolled class).

A physical oval Harkness table is used in every english, language and history class. Some math and science classes have it, and some don’t (because by nature, things like math are more instruction based than say an english class). However, just because some math/science classes don’t have physical, large harkness tables doesn’t mean class discussion isn’t used. In my math class, our desks are arranged in “islands” of 4 people each. Within our island, we discuss and work on problems.

@mrnephew a parent here. I would like to know your opinion and view about how the school includes girls in the math and sciences. Do you think your school does a good job to encourage the girls to join into the sciences and math outside of the reg curriculum? Are the girls encouraged to join math competitions and science clubs? OR is it boys do math & science and girls do the arts ? thxs

@solargem I am a senior at Lawrenceville. Obviously, throughout all of my math and science courses, I’ve seen a balance of boys and girls participating in STEM- I think you’re asking the wrong question when you ask “are the girls encouraged to join…”.

Lawrenceville (or any school for that matter) does not go out of its way to specifically make sure that there are a certain number of girls in the math club, robotics club, etc. and obviously will not punish clubs if there aren’t enough girls- it simply does not work like that. Lawrenceville is an extremely friendly community; It’s up to each individual student to have the drive to seek out opportunities and attend club meetings. If you have the drive, the opportunities will be there… it’s not a question of gender.

I believe in this day and age that girls are still pushed out of the math and sciences. I wanted to know if the stereotypes still exist and is it noticeable in the boarding schools.

If you want in, you can get in. We’ve got opportunities, but people have to take advantage of them.

If anyone has any tips, please reply to my thread thx

Hi, I will be attending lville as a new sophomore next fall. I wanted to know if the school tells you who your roommate will be beforehand or give you their name or anything? I also wanted to know if there are thirds teams for people who are new at a sport or not good enough for jv or varisity?

@bscg1998 I graduated from Lawrenceville this year, but I had a single when I entered so I can’t speak about roommate notification. However you should find out which House you’re in soon, in addition to everyone in your house.
As for sports, there are no 3rds teams. Most teams have a varsity, JV and freshmen team.
