To cave to the societal pressures…
Ask away on anything, I’ll do my best to give a detailed enough response.
I’ll also bump up the old Lawrenceville thread we had last year.
Go Big Red!
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Any student/alum/parent/friend can respond to the questions.
Oh and anyone, feel free to PM me. We’re all excited to meet you on revisit day!
I should have applied nooooo haha! Just giving you something to read, @mrnephew! Does lville compete with Exeter in sports?
Haha thanks.
And I don’t think we do, we’re not in the same conference. Although they might be on the schedule for a couple of our teams.
And we might go against them in prep school tourneys.
After a long, painful admissions process, I find myself honored to be attending The Lawrenceville School in the fall as a rising junior. How do the house system work? Does it matter that I’m starting late? I heard about it during the tour and I’m really excited! Thanks in advance.
First of all, congrats!!
So the house system is, as you’ve probably heard, the dorm system at our school. We have six for boys, Cleve, Kennedy, Hamill, Woodhull, Griswold, and Dickinson, and five for girls, McClellan, Stanley, Stephens, Carter, and Kirby. In the simplest explanation, they’re the names of our dorms, but each house has a unique tradition and way of running. We have inter house competitions too, like House football and the trophies that a house wins at the end of the year for highest overall GPA, most community service hours, and the like.
You’ll be coming in as a junior, so you’ll be in my class. Yeah, the transition’s tough, not going to lie, but you’ll probably get used to the flow of things within a term or so. It took me the two that I was here for (I’m a new sophomore) to adjust. We don’t get the pass/fail transition period that freshmen do. You’ll be fine, though.
Being admitted as a new junior is impressive. Congrats!
Thanks! Also, what’s the internet policy like? i.e. is it ever shut off at night?
Yeah, they shut it off at 11:15 on weekdays, 1:00 on weekends, and seniors get 24 hour wifi. One of the downsides, but you get used to it.
Getting work done by 11:15? That sounds pretty tough! XD
Haha yeah, not many do get it done by 11:15. We load all of the sites that we need before that cutoff, and once the duty masters check in and leave, it’s right back to work.
Do you know about how many students are taken off the waitlist per year? Is FA a huge factor between acceptance and waitlist?
I will be attending Lawrenceville also as a new Sophmore!! Is there a choice for whether or not you have a roommate or is it random chance??
Also **kind of a strange question but what are specifics on dress code. I’m still a little confused. Are jeans allowed or not and what is proper attire on revisit day
First, yes, FA is a big deal on waitlists, but you shouldn’t be expecting to get off of it regardless, sorry.
Secondly, roommate choice for new sophomores is random, I believe. My roommate and I were put together by chance, I believe.
Oh and as for dress code, jeans aren’t technically allowed, but people wear them anyway.
Proper attire on revisit days is just classroom dress, collared shirt and khakis or corduroy pants for guys, and for girls it’s just modesty encouraged kind of thing.
Hello. My son has been accepted at LVille as a Freshman next year with full FA. He’s been public school his entire life but has done very well. What your thoughts on his first year? He’s also accepted to, and contemplating Peddie. Any new detail or stats I should be aware of that’ll help our decision.
Well, I can’t speak for Peddie, which is a great school, but as an incoming freshman, Lawrenceville does a great job with acclimating. First term for freshmen is a pass or fail, which helps take away some stress of adjusting academically. Other schools do that too, not sure if Peddie does. Freshmen are also really isolated from the other sophomores, juniors, and seniors, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.
We are getting a new headmaster next year, who seems to want to be more involved in daily life of students than the current one did.
Oh and you’ll be just in time for our Bath House Cafe! And the new Kirby Math Building.
^and in two years, a renovated Abbott. Too bad for the Class of '16 heheh.
Hahaha yeah, so thankful I’m a sophomore. All of my junior friends ramble on about the administration hating the '16 class.
