I know Middlesex is a relatively small community, do you feel welcomed and warm in the school? Do students compete with each other or help each other succeed? Do you feel happy in school?
What is your experience with admission office? Do you have any suggestions in application process?
Thanks!
What advice would you give to someone applying to Middlesex?
The school has a very closely-knit community! I’m a freshman right now, but I know a lot of upperclassmen from clubs, dances, sports and even just talking to them while waiting for our stir-fry in the dining hall Of course, there is some competition like for becoming the head of the club or making varsity, but I have not heard of an instance where friendships were broken or anyone sabotaged another.
Yes, I am very happy at the school
Suggestions for applying:
The interview is not an interrogation but rather a conversation for them to see that you are a happy person who will not spoil the community. It’s more like a conversation. Smile and be natural
Definitely reach out to coaches and teachers if you are interested in the class they teach or the sport that they coach!
Middlesex tries really hard to admit students that would make their school’s community a positive and supportive place. Show them that you would fit.

I’m considering applying to Middlesex as a 10th grader. As I am an international student, could you possibly give an insight about how diverse the school is? How many 10th graders do they typically accept?
Middlesex accepts anywhere between 20 and 25 students for 10th grade. The school has a large number of students from other countries, especially Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries. There are also a good number of Canadian students who join in 11th grade. The school is 14% international students.
Would Middlesex be considered a “pressure cooker” like the HADES schools?
What is it like socially? Without seated meals and assigned tables to encourage interaction between different grades and groups, do people default to hanging out mostly with people like themselves?
How many kids take advantage of the mindfulness offerings? Does it make the culture less anxious and stressful than at other schools?
I think that it’s different for everyone. I personally feel like the transition was pretty smooth and the work load has never been “un-managable.” Sure, there have been days with a lot of homework and clubs, but I’ve been able to do my hw with at least 6-7 hours of sleep. Then again, I’m also a freshman right now. Some other people tend to think that the work load is a lot since the classes are definitely challenging and it may take them more time and effort to really absorb the material.
Socially, Middlesex is very integrated and most people know each other by name at least since it’s such a small school. MX is sooo much less “cliquey” than my old school.
Mindfulness is required for all freshman once a week for a semester. After that, students have the option to continue it. Most sports teams also do mindfulness together at least once each season.
Looking forward to seeing them for ourselves on April 4
BTW: How does Math placement work?
@CaliMex I think they send out an additional package through the mail in April (I think it was April 15 last year)… After you have finalized your decision. From what I remember the Math placement and other forms (what classes you are going to take, foreign language placement, sport, etc) were in that package… I was international at the time so I got electronic forms sent to me, and I had to print them out, then scan em, and send them back that way… But I believe, regularly, you mail them back …
Just because I distinctly remember the lack of any MX representation on the CC boards last M10! I am a current student at MX and welcome any questions… To anyone else who wants to pitch in - Please do! I offer only one perspective and am still relatively new to the school… Also, I want to encourage you all to visit the Middlesex youtube channel where there is a video of our dorms (and let me tell you right now… OUR DORMS ARE AMAZING… not biased or anything )…

Does the most advanced choir ever travel/tour abroad?
@CaliMex
I definitely can ask if you are more interested (know a couple people in choir) but I think we participated in some festival (in NE though) this winter… I haven’t heard of anything international yet (maybe @bumblebee1212 knows more)
I also think there might be some sort of musical travel abroad opportunity next year (feel like I have heard about that recently)… But don’t think that’s correlated to any competition or choir event…
In regards to workload…
I definitely feel like there are hard days… But honestly, this school has taught me to manage time like nothing ever before XD… There are some weeks that are extremely easy, but others that have so much stuff piled on and you just have to know to use those easy weeks to work ahead and prep yourself for the hard week. From what I have heard (not having the freshman experience myself) there is a significant jump from fresh to soph and then from soph to junior. The classes are rigorous but I did not feel that they were impossible or unmanageable. Writing Workshop is definitely challenging (esp if you come in as a new 10th grader, without the prep you were given in 9th) and you are taught to write in a completely different way (the first thing that was taught was “forget what you were taught… most of it was either completely wrong, flawed, or incomplete”) … However, I must admit, most of the times where I was dying from stress and work was because of self-inflicted procrastination (still terrible at that though… never learn my lesson XD)
What advice would you give to a repeat 10th grade?
I’m currently attending a public school and was planning on taking AP chem, APUSH and BC calc next year, but now I’m concerned about the workload and the whole adjusting to private school thing… Also, I know there are placement tests for math and language courses, but how do history classes work?
