Hi, I just got accepted into Middlesex, and I have a few questions about the school. How is the culture of the school? Is the school mostly liberal or conservative? What is your favorite part about it?
@Atria : If you don’t mind asking around, we would love to know about touring opportunities with choral groups. Our daughter gets to tour internationally with her current advanced chorus and is ambivalent about missing that opportunity.
Congrats on getting in! Unfortunately, APUSH is only a course for 11th graders and a prereq for AP chem is honors chem. So, out of those classes, you would only be able to take BC calc…which is still pretty impressive for a sophomore. I think your workload will be more than the average student, but you won’t be too out of place. If you were able to get in, you won’t have trouble making new friends. Plus, there are 25 other new students in your grade, so teachers understand. Of course, everyone handles work differently, but I think it’ll be manageable, although definitely not as easy as a piece of cake.
I also completely forgot to address your question about history. History is by grade. Sophomores take early modern world, juniors take US history and seniors take electives. Since you’re a repeat, I’m not sure how history would work out for you. You could contact the admissions office or the academic office about that (you can PM me if you need more direction) @random666777
@CaliMex I would recommend talking to the music department. You can look at MX’s staff directory and contact the head of the music department
@Nick8273 Congrats on getting in! The school has a community where everyone knows each other by name and face. Everyone is really friendly here. It’s stressful to a degree where students learn to manage their time, but it’s nice because there’s also time to spend with friends and just relax.
The school is kinda politically correct, so politics are avoided during the school day. I would say that most people are liberal, but there is also a Young Republicans Club that meets.
My favorite part about MX is that it’s small. Because it’s so small, people are more comfortable to be themselves and it’s a lot less clique-y and stereotypical than other schools (I’m comparing to my old school, which was larger).

In regards to AP chem, in fact in regards to most AP science and math (though you can get around math req via placement test), there are specific prereqs. AP chem requires completion of a chem course and a physics course. Most people take chemistry/honor. chem in 10th. Then (if you are interested in APs) AP physics in 11th, and (if you want more APs instead of rly cool electives) AP Chem or Bio in 12th. If you are rly set upon taking AP chem this year (also I want to mention that the science courses here are no joke… not insane by any means but definitely higher standard (esp. honors) than the public schools I attended before) PM me and we can chat (we can see exactly what your prereqs are and I can offer what I know other students have done). Keep in mind that you might want to take it easy your first year. You also will have an advisor who can guide you through future course selection once you get there. I would also say reach out to the science department, but I remember them gently guiding me away from being to ambitious in my first year (I too was very much like you and wished to double up my sciences)…
Like @bumblebee1212, history is based on grade. In 10th everyone (or at least anyone who is taking history) takes (Early) Modern World. If you want to take an AP, there is an AP workshop offered for AP World (one I am doing currently) that allows you to take the AP World Test. If you don’t want to take Early world (for example you don’t want to do it again) some people opt out of history and take other courses (comp-sci being the most popular), for this I would reach out to the history department.
Additionaly if you want a closer look at the pre-reqs go to https://www.mxschool.edu/parents/guides-and-policies/ and then curriculum guide.
@bumblebee1212 @Atria Thank you so much! I’m getting really ahead of myself thinking about schedules next year, but I’m just so excited I’ll probably have a lot to talk about with my advisor…
