For the Honors LLC in IV, is it worth the extra cost to try and get a semi-private double (2 people, 1 bathroom) rather than the 4-person w/ 1 bathroom? I feel like having 4 guys sharing one bathroom and being responsible for cleaning that bathroom may turn into a mess lol

I have a question about Co-op and financial impact making up for classes during Summer Classes. If I decide to stay in NEU dorms for both my 6 month co-ops, I wlll need to pay for room+board for this 12 month period as well as additional $$ for room+board to make up for my classes by attending 4 summer sessions. Has anyone made financial calculation on how much more it will cost with 4 X Summer sessions for room+board? I am aware that total Tuition remains the same with 2 X co-ops for a 4 year term.But the room+board will definitely add on to the expenses on top of the $62,202 per year X 4 Years.

The general rule of co-op is that the money you make should pay for your room and board during that time.

That means that you should end up paying the sticker year price 4 times unless you take more academic semesters than would be equal to 4 total years of academics.

Think of it this way: 4 years of academics x 62k + room and board during co-op - co-op pay = around 4 x 62k still, maybe a bit less/more depending on your co-op pay.

If you aren’t paid (would really only apply to some majors in CAMD) then yes, you would have to factor in that expense, which would be a full year (not academic year) of room/board in the case of two co-ops, or around 30k extra.

Thanks @PengsPhils

Any advice on which orientation date to pick? The first one is in june, but I have my graduation rehearsal then (which I think I can skip) and the second one is in july. I’ve read that the later the orientation is, the harder it is to get into the classes that you want. I don’t want to be stuck with 8am classes ^#(^

Same question as @beczhou…I picked the orientation in late July because I will be up in Cape Cod and only an hour from Boston. Hopefully trading convenience for a later orientation won’t hurt me too much.

You’re pre-seeded into all the classes you need for your major. The only thing you’d “pick” would be an elective if you have that option your first semester due to AP/transfer credit, and you send in your preference for that in early June before anyone has orientation.

I don’t know where anyone got the idea that you got to pick the times/professors of your classes at orientation. The only adjustment they’d make to your schedule is if they put you in calc or something and then you AP out; even then, they just choose another class to put you in. You have no say in the time/day/professor for first semester. If you get an 8 AM, you’ll just live with it.

Oh wow, thanks for clearing this up!! I remember reading posts from the previous years and many said that they couldn’t get into the classes that they wanted because they went to the last orientation :confused:

@beczhou they might have changed it in recent years, but last year when I was at orientation we barely even spoke to our advisors. They introduced themselves to the group of ~100, and that was about it- you only got to have a conversation with them if they messed something up (i.e, put you in calc when you AP’ed out or something), everyone else was hurried out onto the next activity.

That being said… I found out I was going to take accounting my 1st semester, and so I looked up all the accounting professors and picked out the best one. I looked to see his open slots on myNEU- he had a completely full 10:30 class, a completely empty 8 AM class, and a 9:15 with just one open seat left. I e-mailed my advisor that day and said “hey can I be in this accounting class at 9:15?” and so she put me in. This was early June before any orientation. When I got to school, I was the only freshman in that class period, and a lot of my friends had the same professor at 8 AM. So I think I kind of beat the system at least a little. If you want to play detective on which professors you might want, which classes, and if they have any seats open, it doesn’t hurt to e-mail your advisor to ask to be put in those classes.

@novafan1225 How do you know who your advisor is? And how do you schedule your own classes? (online via that Blackboard software…?) Thanks for answering!

@robin1997 if I remember correctly, they contact you. You schedule classes via myNEU database, but please don’t try to come up with your entire schedule. The case I just mentioned I believe was the exception not the rule, and might work in the case of 1 class. I wouldn’t e-mail your advisor with an entire schedule. They open a number of sections for incoming freshman after all current students register, and that won’t be for several weeks.

@novafan1225 Thanks so much for clearing that up! So that means for most of my freshman courses the professor and time will be out of my control? But for a select few where maybe I had AP credit or an elective they didn’t pre-seed me for?

Interesting. Nova what college are you in? I had a different experience last year. I think it depends on your college. I went to the first session and actually changed two of the classes I was “pre-enrolled” in to different times/profs, and chose an elective class/time/professor. I am in the CS department though, the smallest college on campus.

If your college allows you to choose, earlier is better but won’t make a huge difference. My rule would be go as early as is convenient.

@novafan1225 @robin1997 @beczhou

@PengsPhils oh well in that case looks like I should just wait until they contact me with details. I’m College of Science so no idea how this is going to go down.

Hello! I was wondering if you are glad that you chose Northeastern. Also I am noticing that some people with really high stats are being waitlisted, do you know why that is? Thanks :slight_smile:

I am incredibly happy with NEU. The school, the city, the students. I would choose it over virtually any school. If you gave me a chance to pick any school in Boston, I would choose NEU. Yes, over MIT and Harvard. For CS, mind you. If I was in another subject, my answer may change a bit. Also, the subjective factors fit me well. Co-op and Boston / city school were very big factors for me.

NEU has historically waitlisted high stats kids because they see themselves as a safety school to the students, and want to protect yield. I am guessing many drop off the waitlist for another school, and those that stay are probably at the top of said list (speculation). So if they stay on the list, they get a top level waitlist admit. If they go, they just increased their yield. NEU plays the rankings game for the sake of the school: an improvement in rank directly helps the school improve itself academically and structurally. It’s part of the reason I like NEU: they always try to improve, not just in rank, but FOR the students.

How about for business students? are 8 am classes really that bad :frowning:

Didn’t you have 8 am classes (or worse) throughout HS??

@PengsPhils Thanks!

@pengsphils I’m D’Amore-McKim.

Also, 8 AM classes can be bad, yeah, but a lot of people will have them so you’ll all be struggling together. Personally, I’d rather take an 8 AM than a class that goes 'til 5 PM or 6.

@violet12345 yes, absolutely love NU and would choose it again easily. Great city, great location, great campus, and I love the co-op program.
